Good example of the bluing you noobs should be looking for. Same fruits as above after a quick rinse.

Moods- Nice example I felt bad for them the first time I saw the amount of bruising

I've been searching around a 2-6' wide creek, no luck yet.
How near the water should I focus searching?
What size rivers and creeks are you most successful locating em?
Thanks!

You can take a john boat down the creek I'm on.  Some spots a bass boat.

#6 pic - the shot of them in your back-pack.  Why don't you put them in wax paper bags or brown paper bags?

You may already know this BUT they'll be safer in those kind of bags w/ less chances of them getting damaged + you can separate your specimens.

Nice finds Dickenz and deathsquad. Curious deathsquad were these found out where we ran into each other last year?

So this is an interesting observation. So far I have not found anything in my usual spots. They are all empty. That's 7 spots that produced last year but have no sign this year. However I found that morel two days ago and started looking around for more morels and then boom. Found a new ovoid patch that was pumping. I spent 3 hours scouting new potential spots but had no luck. This is a weird season.  I still have hope for my normal spots. The dried weight from that new spot was 9g.

It is still fairly early in the season so I wouldn't give up on your usual patches yet. I've only had one patch produce so far, but two years running it's been the first one to pop. I think, in my case, it has to do with it being swampy all year while my other patches stay dry throughout the year until we get heavy spring rains. After that they'll hold moisture as long as we're getting rain. Two of the other patches are my heavy producers. That's awesome though that you found a new patch, I scouted a new one yesterday. Everything makes me think it'll be prime, it was just too dry at the moment. I did find a King Stropharia there as well.

will a few chilly nights really do much to the fruiting schedule?  imo it won't since we're talking about just a couple hours of a low temp during the wee hours, not all day cold.

i think the dry W and NW wind is more of a bad thing, especially for the exposed areas.  might have to get into those microclimate areas that are sheltered in the next couple days as the exposed areas won't be able to hold the humidity at the surface of the substrate.

just guessing here, but also getting into a lot of weather talk that is frowned upon.

one of my patches has a bunch of hickory nut hulls that are colonized like that.  the myc spreads around the inside of the hull before expanding to the outside.

dickenz07 and DeathSquad .. Sweet finds!

DeathSquad .. That's really cool with the walnuts.  This will be my 6th yr enjoying this species and I've never seen that.  I can say without a doubt that 95% of our finds have come from boxelders. The other 5% were from unidentifiable buried sources.  Just goes to show that there's always more to learn about these beautiful mushrooms.

Checked central MD yesterday and nothing.  We're still a couple weeks out at this rate.

You look at the hunting guides on ovoids and it says box elder, box elder, box elder lol.  It mentions walnuts, that's about it.  But I'm telling ya they like walnut trees just as much if not more than box elder.  Dont ask me why but it does seem like the soil is a darker color around walnuts.  Also,  ive heard walnut trees give off some sort of anti parasitic chemical In the soil. Idk if that has anything to do with it.

I've also seen them colonizing old reed grass at a few of my patches, they don't seem to be a terribly picky species.
