I only read the perspective part. That's what I got from it. Why don't you ask him to explain what that means. It may not be gibberish after all.

I did.  All I got was more gibberish.

The goal here should be to make the confusing clear, to elucidate ideas and bring them into the light for investigation, attack or appreciation.  He, like so many other mystics, is doing the opposite.  He is hiding and disguising to the point where all he has is gibberish.

Why do they do that, left over irrational fear of the inquisitors?

Nah, fear of the ideas themselves I think.  Cognitive dissonance, death anxiety and vested interests in predisposed ideas and culture - they all play a part.

Why do they do that

Death anxiety and emotional attachment to their pet mystical ideas that runs so deep they refuse any Truth that contradicts them. It's classic religion-bahavior.

When Galileo tried to get church leaders to look in his telescope so they may see that the Earth is not actually at the center of god's universe and the sun and stars don't revolving around us, he was put in prison for life and threatened with torture.

You see, the church was emotionally attached to their pet idea too and that behavior extends throughout history all the way into this forum and beyond. It creates wars, dead abortion doctors, and suicide bombers. Go church! :congrats:

:frown: I don't. I think those mythologies are really rich and the stories very pertinent even now, especially with some historical context.

Yes. I concur completely. A prophet of YHWH is something like what Thoth is to Ra - the tongue or word of God.

Is complete bullshit.  http://bible.org/seriespage/elisha-and-two-bears-2-kings-223-25

Quote:
23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!” 24 When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number. 25 And he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

Basically, some bald dude is going somewhere and some kids make fun of his baldness and the guy curses them in the name of the lord.  Shortly after, some bear come and kill 42 children because of this.  I guess the message is that making fun of people is wrong, and the lord will smite you for it.

The point I'm making here is that nobody in their right mind would believe this to be true, and if they DO, they have no grasp on reality.  If they use the excuse of, "Well, it's not LITERAL, it needs to be interpreted", then they're just delusional bullshit artists.

You can't just pick and choose shit from the bible and "interpret" it to mean what you want.  Back then people apparently believed it was true.  You can't just modernize it by putting your own spin on it and call it true.  We shrug off Greek and Roman mythological gods because, well, it's just silly.  But people still believe that a man rose from the dead after a few days?  We believe in talking snakes and talking fire bushes?

Give me a fucking break.

The bible is a joke.  The whole concept of religion is a joke.

The Bible, like other religious texts that both pre-date and follow biblical writ are not a "joke," in any post-modern sense of the word.  You are referencing 2 Kings 2:23 and the prophet Elisha, and of course you would have to be open to instruction on the history of religion, not to mention Old Testament theology in order to come to any understanding of a pre-modern mind-set. I'm afraid that many centuries of hermeneutical study on this and every other recorded passage, hold a whole lot more important coded and numerological value than your silly little dismissal that "The bible is a joke. The whole concept of religion is a joke." The joke, if there is one, is on you. You apparently understand nothing of the matter, but the real question is, 'do you want to understand?'  Ancient Jewish writ, incidentally, must be interpreted on 4 separate levels of meaning using the exegetical instrument referred to as Pardes (PRDS). I doubt that you'll bother to read this, but others might learn something if they are sufficiently curious  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pardes_(Jewish_exegesis) . It is so much easier to dismiss a difficult subject than to suspend one's own petty prejudices in order to learn something with a depth that far surpasses the obviously mythic story-line, just as fundamentalist Christians dismiss science because they can't hold the mythological and the cosmological in their mind at the same time. These stories are midrash*, not history. The knowledgable ancients understood more and more depth of meaning, which they outlined in PRDS. Only the children stayed at the literal level.

*The Hebrew term Midrash (Hebrew: מדרש‎; plural midrashim, "story" from "to investigate" or "study") also "Interpretation" or "Exposition"[1] is a homiletic method of biblical exegesis. The term also refers to the whole compilation of homiletic teachings on the Bible.
Midrash is a way of interpreting biblical stories that goes beyond simple distillation of religious, legal or moral teachings. It fills in many gaps left in the biblical narrative regarding events and personalities that are only hinted at. (Apple Dictionary)

This video made me cry, you demonstrated very will what is wrong with the church. These people are abusing young children for their own personal gain, they are exploiting them to create a self riotous army for an unnecessary war. This is disgusting. I would fight tooth and nail to bring what these people are doing to a halt. This is the modern day inquisition. This is not the message of Christ. This cannot go on.

This video made me cry

Notice around 1:50 where she suggests that Harry Potter should be put to death.

In Pakistan right now there's an 11 year old girl with Down's Syndrome who was chased by a mob trying to stone her to death for burning the koran (she wasn't burning the koran). She survived only because she was arrested and is now facing execution if convicted. She was just burning random pieces of paper with Arabic writing but the local illiterates assume any paper with Arabic writing is the koran. She's not out of the woods yet. The execution is still possible.

Now here we have another religious extremist who would probably say the Muslims are evil for doing that to the little girl even as she teaches a bunch of little kids that another kid, Harry Potter, should be put to death.

And people wonder why I rile against religion everywhere I see it. Religion is a plague on the face of the Earth.

I don't think it's religion, I think it's people committing heinous crimes in the name of religion. If religion did not exist there would be another reason these people would find to justify their acts.

I understand you though, I too am beginning to see how easily corruptible the teachings of religion are, how easily corruptible the people who follow religion are.

I love my religion, I love my god, I love my teachings.

I despise the filth that has collected on the church, I despise the violence, I despise the atrocities commited in the name of god.

This needs to stop,
NOW!

But how?

What can we do, if not as individuals but as numbers. How can we lift the fog that has settled around so many peoples eyes. How can we stop these injustices, these slaughters, this arrogance? Is there a way? Or will we fall to our own demise?

So its just a coincidence that most Muslim teachings and the Quran says to stone to death women that have sex out of wedlock and that this is done all the time?  Why do we see suicide bombings throughout the muslim world, but don't see that to anywhere near that extent amongst Tibetan Buddhists?  Why don't we see the Christian Palestinians, the Jewish Palestinians, blowing up old people's homes and killing civilians at the rate of the Muslims whos religion preaches martyrdom and jihad?

Its not just "in the name of"- its a direct consequence of and fulfillment of the teachings of the religion.  The religion teaches such actions, religious people carry it out, and you brush it off as "in the name of".  Ridiculous.

Quote:

a) so what,
b) what evidence of this do you have?  We see girls being mutilated throughout muslim Africa due to the somewhat unique teachings of their brand of Islam- why is this particularly prevalent amongst Muslims?  Why do we continue to see jews removing the foreskin of children?  Why do we see the same recommended by Jewish teachers?  Is it just a coincidence that the Jewish Bible is full of loathing for emissions and sex and that RaMBaM taught the penis should be cut to make sex as unpleasent as possible?

So what religion is "your religion"?  I don't see too many that aren't violent, aren't filthy, and aren't urging atrocities.  Seems more straining to find some other explantion for the cultish filthy habits of god's chosen tribes.

By stop doing what your doing and lieing about the fact that the religion teaches that these horrible behaviors are a duty or to be exhalted.  By stop lieing about the fact that all religions are not equally harmful and equally problematic.  By stopping the crude and ignorant impulse to attribute the wellbeing of the individual to the values of their culture- muslims suffer no less under theocracy and brutal rules than do any others, its a false multiculturalism to ignore the evils of their religion out of some pretense of open mindedness.

You are contributing to this by lieing about the reality- ignoring the differences amongst religions and the harm they cause is just as bigoted as the historical efforts to demonize particular foreign sects.  Nobody benefits when we refuse to recognize the goodness in one religion for fear of endorsing some irrational hatred of another- they aren't all the same.
