I would agree that people don't focus nearly enough on the teachings of Jesus, but his death on the cross does hold deep symbolic significance.

In the Jewish world in which Jesus lived, lambs were sacrificed at the temple to cleanse the sins of the community.  Jesus is known by the title Agnes Dei: the Lamb of God.  He is the ultimate sacrifice:  God sacrificing Himself in the flesh to heal the sins of the world.  It is said that the wage of sin is death.  Dying on that cross was the weight of the world's sins and iniquities.

Jesus did not die for me. That much I know. He died because he pissed off the prevailing authorities.

You would think that the Resurrection would be more talked about.

People die heroicly all the time, but Jesus (supposedly, according to Christians) died and came back.

You know, I am surprised alot more Christians don't question the validity of certain sections of the Bible.

If you believed that Jesus is the Son of God and died to forgive us of our sins, and Satan is a great deceiver whose mission is to confuse people into not believing in Jesus for some reason, then would it not seem suspicious that Jesus was resurrected from the dead?

Jesus led a humble life, instead of being the high-ruling Messiah that the Jews expected to see.  Why would he return from the dead and hang with the apostles for a month before just floating up into the heavens?  Was Jesus not always trying to teach them to have stronger faith?  It seems to me that if I was a Christian, and believed I should be on the lookout for some great deceiver, the resurrection would reek of fish.

And would Jesus really want to be regarded as God?

It would seem that the third temptation of Christ in the desert would foreshadow the way that Jesus, in the flesh, is worshiped as somewhat of an idol:

The Devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the earth, and told Him how he could have everything:

Matthew 4: 8-10 reads {8} Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. {9} "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." {10} Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"

Strange that Jesus refers to God as deserving of all worship, instead of himself.  Why would Jesus want to have such a high posthumous regard as an equal to God, when his entire life was lived so humbly.

I would think that some Christians would believe an alternative to the common story.  After all, the common story was not bound together as what we know as the Bible until 350 AD or so, when Constantine decided to include in it all gospels dubbing Jesus as equal to God, and discarded all gospels regarding him as a master teacher, to end all of the annoying bickering among bishops.  Well it certainly worked!  No more bickering among the bishops.

I am just throwing ideas around.  I am agnostic, so it doesn't bother me to look at all the angles of what I consider to be an elaborate fairy tale.  But I can't help but think that Jesus was a really cool dude who had a particular dislike for authority.  i especially like the story about him going into the temple cracking whips and turning over tables!

So you still hold on to part of the myth?

Because Jesus could of kept living if he really wanted to, but he decided to die, so the rest of us can go to heaven if we accept him as our lord and savior. Every human is a sinner, the only person that has ever lived that did not sin was Jesus, which is why he was able to resurrect. The wages of sin are death, and every human being, accept Jesus, HAS to die.

So he could still be around, if he wanted to, but instead, he died so that we can wash our sins onto him, and go to heaven.

Most "Christians" today do not even read their bible, much less the gospel, they cant even understand it.

People today just like the emotion created from remembering Jesus' death because honestly,if they cannot understand the gospel, they cant find anything else "real" to hold on to with their religion.

To me, Jesus (real or story) died because of humanity's sins.

If a prisoner today is executed, for a crime he didn't commit, he died for our sins, no?

Jesus was executed for being a "dangerous revolutionary".

I agree that Jesus went on trial for being a revolutionary, but it seems like the jury of his peers were more to blame than the authorities.

Pontius Pilate didn't want to kill Jesus, but the mob insisted that he die.

It is freaky how people will group together against a heretic, i.e. a free thinker.
