The meaning of life/ the cosmic joke...
    #6362144 -

Know what it is?

Is there such a thing as a key piece of knowledge we're missing that makes all of existance make perfect sense? Does it elude us now because humanity is the punchline? Do the birds know the secret?

Look at all the things around you, especially the inanimate things..

Inanimate things exsist and they can have a purpose: A rock can be used as a tool. The rock still exsists, however, without the purpose that the tool user has for it.

So exsisting doesn't nessesarily mean that you have purpose.

The meaning of life is really what you make of it yourself combined with what other things make for you. There really is no solid answer.

If there were a solid answer, how can you be so sure you'd automatically be aware of it?

Perhaps the cosmic joke is that there is no purpose?

The point is that there IS no solid answer. It's rather naive to assume that the structure of the Universe was conceived with us in mind. It's actually a leap of logic to assume any designed structure to the Universe at all.

Everything exists as it does. There is no "Ultimate Answer", we're all just a bunch of little squishy organisms going about our existence. Cosmic joke? Who's joke? God's? Show me God. If God actually designed the Universe according to us, then he's certainly not a benevolent God. The universe exists as it does and we exist as we do. Even within humanity there is no "answer" for happiness. If you want to be happy and fulfilled YOU have to figure out what would make it happen.

Stop looking for an answer and start making it work!

What I meant by no solid answer is that it is differant for everyone and everything.

THere definately is purpose because we make it.

It seems as if you're looking for a "God's purpose" for life.

My point is you cannot say that something does not exist simply because you have not personally experienced it yourself. If you have not come to understand an "ultimate answer", that does not mean that one does not exist. (Just as I cannot prove to you that one does exist.)

Logic would dictate that there must be a better explanation than what we know of, for the simple fact that we know nothing of the workings of the universe other than what we have seen, felt, heard, smelled, and touched. Because these senses are themselves material, it's reasonable to expect that there exists much more than we can sense in this material world/universe.

Looking for a reason why.

I believe that we are an experiment, that's why the keys of omnipotence have been withheld from us.

Some empricist philosophers (David Hume especially) actually would say that while what we experience gives us insight, it never allows us to know "rules" about the universe. No matter how many time experience shows us that something is the case, that never is proof of fundamental laws of the Universe, because the fact that we have not experienced the contrary does not mean it cannot happen.

But even Hume himself casts extreme doubt on the very existence of God.

Other approaches would lead you down a different logical pathway, but still arriving at the conclusion that the Universe, in all likelihood, simply exists and is not necessarily ordered or structured.

No, logic dictates a different explanations, but a single "better" one. To say there is an "ultimate code" by which to live your life has no logical basis. Ockham's razor quickly cuts down hypotheses that the universe is ordered into harmony and that human experience has an "ideal" that can be reached. You're talking about ideas that have no noumenal reality and that are entirely questions of judgment. One way to live your life would not be inherently more correct than another, does not the value of any experience rest with the judgment of the individual? The "answer" for you might not be the answer for someone else. So you see how it is meaningless to ask for an "ultimate" answer, or at least one that is objectively superior?

It's reasonable to expect that our perception of the universe is relevant only to our senses and the way our consciousness is structured. We cannot "know" the true nature of the universe independent of human perception. It is NOT reasonable to expect that something else necessarily exists or affects us, only that it is possible.

You see, the entire point I'm trying to make is that we live by our perceptions and we can only view the world from such. You can't even truly know the world as someone else views it, or as it is in it's reality. If you're trying to experience the world in a way that is most appealing to your consciousness, it's probably most useful to assume that there is no single set of principles that will apply to ALL of the universe or even to all of humanity.

My knee jerk reaction would also be that we don't really have a purpose, and that we make whatever out of life? But it is kind of strange that in who we are and what we represent and how our uniqueness sets us apart from the rest. I mean how did we randomly come about and why? Your question would pose a deep philosophical analysis that would be hard to really unravel. For me at least. I mean its too easy to say that we were brought here for our own self created endeavors, or that we're basically a product of random chance that basically exists for sake of itself. I think religion was born because of these questions.

Yes, I would agree that religions were created to bridge the gap between the limitation of human understanding, and the wisdom of the creator.

My advice would be for everyone to seek out the comfort and goodness of the creator on their own without the aid (interference) of these irrelevant, man-made "God delivery services" we refer to as "religions".

There's a reason for love!

I really don't know what place religion has. Of course I know alot of is pure B.S., if there was a god, would god even work through such a system of beliefs, maybe, I do get clues from followers, that kinda point to mental illness. Me I don't concern myself with it, cause it doesn't seem to really help.

We have this purpose to survive.. live well, collect things. Materials.

Since we have a self defined meaning in life.. each persons is different. Some may be the same.

I disagree that it is our purpose to collect things. This behavior has been taught to us at an early age by the consumerism movement.

The purpose for life is something else, something greater, something much more beautiful.

I would like to say that love is the purpose of life, but I believe instead that love is more just the stage which has been set for us, but it is not to be the show itself.

The cosmic joke is that nobody exists but you, and this is a hallucination and nobody is supposed to tell you that, but I just did. No matter, you're programmed not to believe me anyway, so ...
