That's awesome. I'm wondering if after my grow works out if id be able to plant my pan sub on my balcony in a huge flower pot I have. I only know of pan cincts growing where I'm from but I was hoping maybe I could get them to fruit in an outdoor patch sometime.


I have successfully grown pan cyans outdoors. Actually the left photo in my sig is my outdoor pan cyan grow from last fall.

Those are beautiful too. I'm not even sure if my shoebox is going to successfully fruit or not but I'm hoping so. Wether they do or don't I'll plant them and see how it goes. Do other pans grow in the same zones as cincts wether they naturally do or not?

Nice Hindsight, good they already started! Pretty sure they will keep popping when weather will be good for them & for longer than you got with your outdoor Pan cyans last year.

Thanks guys! Yeah VL, I would guess these will grow for me from April through November or December which is quite a wide season. The only thing I am a bit sketchy about is IDing them to ensure they aren't something else that decided to grow here. I know in my outdoor manure pile, I get various mushrooms growing - many that look like pan cyans of some sort but that's unlikely because I didn' inoculate the manure pile. I'm 95% certain the fruits in my pan bispo patch are in fact pan bispo but don't like to play around unless 100% certain. I have a microscope so could look at the spores but I also don't know if there are any other look-alikes that have a similar spore size, shape, and color as these. Anyone know?

On another note, I had ONE good plate and jar of the F2 generation of my Nixveneficus Pan Cyans (the white ones). My swabs were growing mostly mold but luckily I had one good one. I wasn't sure it was good because it looked a little moldy in the tub growing on the substrate, and that caused me to just neglect it. So I didn't case it, didn't really pay much attention to it, and just left it sitting on the shelf in a shoebox with a lid on it (not in the fruiting chamber). I decided to take another look at it today and found it fruiting lol. So it fruited in a shoebox with a lid which is similar to monotub style. That in of itself is cool. But notice how different the fruits look - tall, very skinny, and with teeny tiny little caps. Very different from how they grow in the tent. I think it's safe to say that the conditions were responsible for this. I removed the lid and put the box in my tent today then took this photo immediately following. Today or tomorrow I'll pull these fruits out, apply a casing layer, and see what it does under my normal tent conditions.



I'm also noticing some inconsistencies in my instapot pasteurization. I am finding I sometimes get inadequate heating from batch to batch. There is something about the amount of water needed surrounding the bag of substrate, in order to keep the temp sensor of the instapot reading properly, and if you don't have enough water, it won't heat up hot enough. When this happens, I notice I get other mushroom fruits popping up - I think they are inky caps from spores riding along with my straw and not getting killed during pasteurization due to improper temps. I get more trich spots when this happens too.

Bro, Bisporus will bruise dark blue for me 10/10 times. Also, you may not be able to identify them as Bisporus 100% of the time, but you can ID a Panaeolus 100% of the time. There are no toxic Panaeolus so I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks Adas! Is there a page here or somewhere that goes over all the specific ID characteristics of Panaeolus?

My bispos are kind of dark so tough to see blueing.

IME the stipes are never dark. I'd look at any old mushroom identification guide, there must be plenty of those.

Thanks - I googled it and found some stuff but it’s quite limited. Beyond the usual size shape and color we are used to seeing with pans, the spore print shape and color and presence of a pore on the end of the spore was really it. There is one lookalike that requires soaking the spores in sulfuric acid to see if it bleaches or not. I just didn’t know if there was something super detailed and accurate on this site that I somehow missed.

If you have a microscope, check the basidia.  Bisporus=2-spored basidia.

How can I tell the difference between white NecD and regular NecD? In reading the little info it seems like you can get either from the same print depending which culture is chosen and grown. Is my understanding correct?

How can you tell if you have the white-looking ones I was lucky enough to get? They have almost no color on the cap or stem and the gills are a very light greenish color that you can easily see light through and that will never produce any visible spores. Spore prints are not visible but if you look at the print under a microscope, you will see plenty of spores, and they are the regular rust brown color, but there isn't a thick blanket of them.

There is nothing different about NecD and these white varieties vs any other mushroom species/variety. Anything can produce unusual looking fruits, whether darker, lighter, or completely albino. I haven't seen anyone else get the white-ish NecDs I lucked out in finding but that doesn't mean it won't happen to someone else. I plan to give a ton of prints (swabs) away if I can get them to F7 and stable. So far they appear quite stable in F2, and even F1 was pretty stable. I need to up my swab game first though - they aren't clean enough yet.

Also, while they are cool looking, the ones I and my friends have eaten so far have not been very potent. Potency is similar to cubes. Trip is like pans though. So it's not like these are some kind of holy grail or anything. Just nice to not have spores dropping, and something unique to grow and look at. After they are stable I'd like to try to see if I can get potency back in them.

Surface conditions look good shr00mFer. Don't think I'd do anything different but I'm not an expert on growing pans in tubs.


Here's my next bispo tray from the tent. Canopy will get a bit fuller in the next 24 hours but wanted to snap these pics today before I start getting much spore drop. Still waiting for trip reports from friends.





I pulled out the tiny fruits from my uncased Nixveneficus and cased it then put it into the tent so hoping for a second flush of normal sized white fruits in 5 or so days. If so, and I can get some clean swabs from them, I'll be on F3.

Those are aluminum trays. Put in tub which is acting as FC. Usually put some perlite beneath but ran out off.
