What's up mush cult!?
So I have never seen a thread like this and I thought it would be a good idea to have a spot where all us cultivators can post our special little tricks that make the hobby that much easier and enjoyable
My MCLH: everyone uses some kind of tray in their SAB or in front of their flowhood to elevate their agar dishes off of the floor of the SAB or up into the flow of sterile air from a hood.
One issue I always have is my donor plate always sliding around on the tray when I go to cut into it. It can be a pain in the ass to hold the plate still with one hand while also holding the lid and cutting the agar with the other.
My solution: Use a dab pad or silicon cutting board and put it on your tray. Now put you donor plate on the dab pad or silicon board so that it won't slip around as you cut!
No dab pad or silicon board? No problem if you have rtv silicon gasket maker on hand!

It was a little tedious, but I basically painted the rtv onto the rungs of my little tray! Once it dries a little, I'll clean up the edges and make it look a little nicer. No more dealing with petris sliding all over the place!
What are your MCLHs?
I'll add more categories and hacks as they come in! If you feel I should have put a hack in that you posted that I didn't list here, just let me know and I'll add it!

I'd say the one about putting the lid part of two piece lids on upside down to reduce the vacuum it has when pc'ing water/liquid media but I think that's pretty common knowledge by now.

I moved into a tiny apartment, but I do have a very wide (10 ft) closet with sliding doors. I'm building a stand with a flip up table so I can slide the door over and do my FH work in the hallway

Nice! Ya I know the woes of cultivating in a small apartment way to well Walk in closets are like a must when I was apartment hunting. I love my house now though, got a whole room dedicated now. I like the idea of a pullout table built into the closet on a track or something. Or like one that folds out like those old beds in NY apartments.
LLL, ya that's an old one but still a good one, I use my lids like that still

Life hacks make me feel like I have no common sense
That being said I wish I read this 20 minutes ago and added a silicone pad
Wouldnnt flipping the lid upside down open the jar to contains while cooling

tump said: Slurry is the bomb.
One of the rare correct things tump has ever said
My 'cult hack' is making use of pf tek slurries but without having to dick with cakes or use blenders, which is a huge hassle in my opinion.
The trick I'm using is all about insane speed of colonization from nearly 100% guaranteed clean liquid inoculants. A quart grain jar will hit 100â„… colonization in 4 or 5 days, much faster than when I use LC's but with the advantage that you can easily inspect the inoculant for contams.
I get this started with agar, and noc pf tek sub with an agar wedge from a nice looking culture.
I quoted myself here (with a few modifications) from a thread where OP was asking if it was possible to make clean inoculants without using agar, which you can, but with agar it's easier to get good results with this method because you can select desirable growth patterns more easily with which to inoculate the pf tek substrate.
I've been without my laptop for the best part of 2 months, when they fix it I'll make a detailed write-up with lots pics, but in the meantime I'd like to share this draft in case someone wants to give it a try:
Quote:
Josex said: 1. Inoculate little pf tek plates with spore solution. In the pic you can see glass plates but always use glad mini rounds for this, you'll see why later. Sterilize them for 70 min at 15 psi.

2. Once you have some growth, don't use a scalpel or an inoc loop to transfer to another blank pf tek plate, it isn't easy with these. Instead, sterilize a syringe (21G needle) with some distilled water in it. Place the syringe with the needle and the needle cap standing up in the pc and sterilize.
3. In a SAB, stab just once a nice spot of myc, no scraping or squirting water in the plate, just stab fast and clean only once until you touch the bottom of the plate with the needle.
4. Squirt a small jet of water into a blank pf tek plate to expell the myc that got trapped in the needle. You'll see growth in about 5 days. This is slow, I know, but you're noccing with just a few cells of myc and this would equate to doing multiple transfers cutting wedges with a scalpel, so the genetics are going to be nice and narrowed in one single transfer. You would have to be seriously handicapped to get contams doing this procedure, it really is retard proof.
5. Transfer myc from 1st gen plates to multiple blanks using the same method. You can noc an insane amount of plates from just one donor, so once you get this thing going you're always gonna have plates to work with. Keep the donor plates, these will pin like crazy so you can take clones from them.
6. Upon hitting 100â„… colonization, tiger drop one or two plates into a blender bottle with blender ball. The pf tek puck will dislodge without effort.
The original Blender Bottles are not made from pp5 plastic, and they'll warp when you take them out of the pc hot and tighten the lid. So I went to a sports nutrition shop and bought blender bottles that are pp5.
Fill the bottles with 350-400 ml of distilled water. For that amount of water I tiger drop 2 plates, but you could also split that water into 2 blender bottles, one plate each, this will be safer but I never bother doing this. Throw blender ball in and sterilize the water for 20 min.
7. After the tiger drop, take the blender bottle out of the SAB and shake the fuck out of it. The pf tek pucks will desintegrate totally except for a few little chunks.
8. Use the LI no noc whatever you want. You can noc from 10 to 15 grain jars with this.
You don't have to be afraid to pack the sub down in the plates, the myc will colonize the whole plate, bottom, surface and sides (and the interior of course) and if the sub is sufficiently packed down it will be very easy to disloge the puck from the bottom of the container at 100â„… colonization. Most times I don't even need to squeeze the bottom of the mini round, the puck usually comes right off the bottom by gravity alone if I flip the plate upside down.
I also do the sub a little bit wetter than the traditional pf tek (~ 15% wetter) and add a sprinkle of fresh coffee grounds because it really improves the texture of the sub and it's also a nice additive.
I want to add that I only use these pf tek plates to make LI's, this shit is a powerful inoculant. And I also use them to take clones.

Nice little write up josex!
Feel free to post the whole thing here when you're done with it!
Another life hack: If you use spawn bags, don't throw them away before cutting out the filter! Especially if you use .2 micron filter bags, those filters work really well and you can silicone them onto LC jars, or master grain jars

Ah you're the blender bottle guy Josex.
I got a nice blender bottle, plan to drop like 4 plates into 2 cups of water , shake shake shake, Do like 18 jars or something.
Has a real nice blender ball, and says leak proof and warranty. Bottom is rounded so stuff doesn't clump or something.

speaking of blenders...
(ive posted before)
also take note of other things that share the diameter of a regular mouth mason jar. certain glass bottles of salad dressing are going to be recycled into media bottles(i love re-purposing shit)
and as we all knows 'pp5' now dominates the psyche when plastic containers are encountered IRL

There's a clearence Oster at Walmart for super cheap. Think it's a small sized one though. Not sure if the base fits a jar or not. Will look.

I do something like this, I dip my scalpel in some 91% first to clean it off then flame it red hot so I'm not burning agar residue onto the blade between transfers. I use a baby food small glass jar for that.
Quote:
bodhisatta said: if you dip your metal tools like x-acto in 91% iso first (not too deep or it fills up the tip where the blade goes and burns like a candle) then flame off the iso as well as get the blade hot. it also cleans off agar goo that might be on there that just chars on and makes blades go to shit twice as quick
I use a baby food jar with just enough iso to get up to the top of the blade. use fresh stuff each time since you dirty it up

Yeah Josh, a wash bottle is what most peeps use, I just wanted to go with something I could find locally and a condiment squeeze bottle fucking rocked my world and gave me a better understanding about the nature of the universe...

What do any of y'all ever need a wash bottle of iso for? I use a spray bottle so I use very little. A wash bottle seems like a waste of alcohol and a spray disperses it better
