Re: The OFFICIAL OVOID SEASON THREAD 2017 [Re: Hygrocybe]

So, after a rain like this. Is it good to go out and hunt the next day, or is it better to wait a few days after the rain stops?
It's the weekend, so I'm just trying to gauge whether it would be worth devoting time to tomorrow or not.

The night's look chilly for this week.  When the temps are colder they need a couple days to grow.  When the days are in the 80s, they'll be mature in a day or two.  I'd give them until, at least, Sunday or Monday to get big enough.

Found a beautiful little Central PA park.  It was everything I was hoping for. Someone else was there before me by about a day.  If I was able to grab as many mature fruits as I did, that guy must have made out really well.  My buddy and I drive 3 hours on a hunch. We checked 8 areas with only 1 popped.  Every other spot we checked was picked clean. There was so much trampled nettle.  My hands are on fire.  Oh yea, I ate my first pa ovoids out there.  I was standing in the middle of the nettle with my hands in the meditating posture thinking, "i don't even have to look.  If they want to be found,  they'll come to me. Oh look there they are." Perfect trip. Both trips

The mycelium was running all through the mulch bed, tho, so I'll check it again soon.

I'm pretty new to ovoids. Can someone chime in on how soon a bed like this would possibly put out another flush. We got .75" rain last night and are supposed get another inch or more over the weekend, tho lows are dipping into upper 30s.

It's right by a hospital. I'm used to hunting in the wild, so urban finds like this crack me up.

From your description it sounds like you found my spot Eutebius! There was a fairy ring that was totally dried out by the time I got there.

This has been a great week for me and everyone in this thread has been so great. Thanks for all the posts and helpful responses from everyone. Today I went out on my lunch to a spot that I've driven to a couple times but always bailed out on because there is construction going on and a ton of fisherman there but today it was totally empty. I found this bend in the creek on maps and the place is covered with Japanese Knotweed that stands 8 to 10 feet tall. Walking through it was so serene and all I could hear was frogs and the river. Then I ran into this guy.

A little further on down the way I found a black walnut and looked under it and found my first wild ovoids.

It felt so wholesome and right just kneeling in the dirt and feeling like all of the research and hours spend hunting finally paid off. To top it off, it all happened the day after me and my girlfriend started our microdosing regiment. It's just so awesome that all of the things that I learned on this thread came together in such a meaningful way.

Thanks everyone. It was all so wonderful that this sad sack of a morel didn't even phase me!

It's not really a phenotype so much as a reaction to cold and dry weather then being rehydrated, it is extreme bluing and means pretty much all the active ingredients have oxidized. Cyans and alleni will do that metallic finish thing too if subjected to the right conditions.

That's awesome your car ride worked out.  I'm sure there's a couple locals that frequent areas around there.  The ovoids have been around and been picked for at least a decade.  And yeah, nettle is only for the dedicated.  You were determined enough to deal with and pick around, so the ovoids rewarded you.  Those PA ovoids are really potent lol.  Doesn't take much to warp your mind. So stoked your trip (pun intended) was fun and rewarding!

rob1130ob: do you really see a lot of evidence of mushroom hunters out there in ovoid land.  Someone here likes to dig holes.

Yeah, there's a couple people that know what's up.  You can tell when someone has been looking by the celendine too.  Places where people look always get smashed and dies off before the untouched celendine does.  And you really have to push the nettle away before you get into things.  I end up cutting away nettle and pushing down things just to get the pics I get.  It's almost impossible to see the clusters otherwise.  Things are getting tall and the nettle is not something you want to be digging thru.  It's best just to clear areas around the logs that are producing so that you don't have to deal with it next trip out.

Nah. There really are black pin ovoids. It has nothing to do with weather conditions.

Ok. So in nj, I've never seen evidence of other pickers. This trip to pa showed me there's a lot more our there hunting. Whoever it was, is a butcher. The trampled down so much nettle, they stepped on fruits, and lifted and flipped damn near every log in the forest.    I've found every characteristic you guys are talking about.  Black caps, blue, cream, brown, wavy caps, bottle caps, and nipply caps here in nj.
