I don't think that science has ever claimed that. Religion did however.

I'd even go one step further and say that any concept of a God that isn't a personal diety, who intervenes in the affairs of humans, is also completely worthless.  Even if you want to say God exists as the laws of physics like Einstein would say...then what the fuck is the point of calling it God?  In other words, if everything is God, then what ISN'T God?

See this is what I mean by theism slowly becoming less traditionalist or dogmatic.  The more science explains our universe, the more conflicting religious beliefs we have to take away.  Compare the Puritans' beliefs of the 17th century to your suggestion that God is simply whatever the fuck we want it to be.  And again, notice how barely anyone takes the Bible literally anymore...it's all picking and choosing, slowly backing into a corner faced with the truth science offers.

I would say all of these trends are evidence enough that religion (theism, not necessarily all philosophy) is dying out and atheism will prevail.

I don't think I remember seeing anyone in this thread saying that, though I must admit I skipped some posts.
Anyways, personally I don't think I could say I know whether or not we will find out everything though science, simply because it is completely unknown what will happen and how things will evolve. What I do know though is that science seems to be the most efficient in the pursuit of knowledge.

One of the fundamental pillars of science is that things can always be disproved.  All our current models are based on the evidence we have now.  If new evidence comes to light, theories and models will change.

Can the method of science itself be disproven?
And if it can, can science itself be used to do so?

If not, then what reason do I have to believe that the scientific method has any validity? It violates some of its own rules.

oh wow, im agnostic myself. I believe in a high level, spirits and things we cant explain. But i lack faith. I believe religon was made up back in the day, to put the fear of god in someone. And i think that the only reason people believe there could be a god, is because of how complex the brain is, we as humans have a cortex. It allows us to have feelings about our feelings, and we are able to ask us why we are here and how we got here. And to me its just life, we live then die just like EVERY other living thing on this earth.  And also to me all religions are cults! Im not knocking anyones beliefs. im just stating mine,  i do onto others as they do onto me. I believe in karma....

All of those questions can be answered philosophically (and most of them scientifically) without any concept of God.  This thread is about atheism, which is the lack of belief in God.  What you're addressing has to do with physics, cytology, neuropsychology, epistemology, and so on....again, none of which require any concept of a supernatural deity or GOD.

Actually, science cannot explain why life prevails. Neither can pshilosophy. Lack of a belief in the guy in a white rob in the sky, or the spirit in the ether, does not constitute a lack of believe in a driving force that exists on a higher plane of existence than man.

YES, yes it can, and it has.  Many, many times.

I never said it was the ONLY correct belief.  In fact, I clearly said it wasn't a belief at all.  Science itself is not a uniform philosophy.  You can see within it many opposing theories based on observable fact, all of which can be tested, or they would not be theories at all.

Religion can't be said be to be true though because it can't be proven.  Notice how I don't say religion is not true.  These are completely different statements with different premises.

I think you should take a course in logic to be honest, to understand negatives and double negatives, and all that good stuff.

If it isn't the only correct belief, how can it prevail? What exactly is it fighting against? This brings me back to my first post in this thread.

I'm simply saying what I'm hearing. I'm not trying to use logic in any way shape or form, merely reflection. If I'm incorrectly understanding what you're saying, that is one thing. A thing that requires no further education in a classroom, and only further dialogue.

How is "God is a fad" saying "God may exist?"

There have been sciences in the past, notably phrenology, that utilized empirical methods, only to find out they were WAY off.  Alchemy is another.  Here's a list of scientific "facts" from 20 years ago as well, that science discovered to be untrue (kind of like how "the world was flat" was seen as a clearly observable fact not long ago).

NOTE: this list is from 2002, and even in the last 7 years, some of these may have been refined further as science revises itself to become closer to the truth.

"1 – There are 9 planets in our solar system

New information: We have at least 10 planets

Far out! Astronomers discover 10th planet
2000 EB173 orbits sun between Neptune, Pluto
http://www.freep.com/news/nw/orbit26_20001026.htm

Or maybe, we have only 8 ---

“ Planetary scientists at Caltech have discovered a spherical body in
the outskirts of the solar system. The object circles the sun every
288 years, is half the size of Pluto, and is larger than all of the
objects in the asteroid belt combined.

"Quaoar definitely hurts the case for Pluto being a planet," says
Caltech planetary science associate professor Mike Brown. "If Pluto
were discovered today, no one would even consider calling it a planet
because it's clearly a Kuiper belt object."”

2 – There are 30 orders of insects

New fact: Now there are 31

“For the first time in 87 years, researchers have discovered an insect
that constitutes a new order of insects. Dubbed "the gladiator" (for
the recent movie), it lives in the Brandberg Mountains of Namibia, on
the west coast of Southern Africa.”

3 – Ice Age clothing was made of crudely formed animal hides

New Information:

“… the warm weather clothing of at least some of our ancestors
included caps or snoods, belts, skirts, bandeaux (banding over the
breasts), bracelets, and necklaces—all constructed of plant fibers in
a great variety of woven textiles…”

4 – Humans evolved directly from tree dwelling apes

New information – more likely from ground dwelling apes

"Our study demonstrates that our earliest ancestors did not simply
come down from the trees. Rather, they evolved from an ape already
adapted to life on the ground."

5 – There are 109 Elements in the Period Table

New information: Since 1994, six new elements have been discovered

6 – The first mammals evolved about 155 million years ago.

New information –

“The shrew-like animal would have run under the feet of dinosaurs at
the start of the Jurassic period, nearly 195 million years ago …
Hadrocodium wui pushes back by another 40 million years its first
appearance in the fossil record.”

There are two clear categories of contenders - religion/faith/superstition vs atheism/agnosticism/science/reason

God can't be proven and people will not believe in magic forever.  It's an assumption, but one based on good intuition, and the supposition that man won't be ignorant forever.

Not the best definition, but: a supreme being that does not manifest itself to us (evidently).

Look at Spinoza's concept of "god" and I think thats the best examination of what the word god could represent thus far.

I can grant you that in some sense appreciation of that sort of "god" is fairly worthless, in a pragmatic sense... but yeah - in some sense figuring out a lot of what hard science does could be called worthless too... just perhaps viewed as more concrete or comphrehensive, nonetheless it seems to have epistemlogical superiority a lot because it is easily conveyed with a causal chain of reasoning... and is quite the hobby. There are some good rationalist arguments for the necessity of an ultimate being (dont get all freaked out by that notion!)... Maybe delving into these thoughts gets those astute scientists all pissy because really I don't think we will ever know how/why concretely anything exists - it just does and you were thrust into it - GOOD DAY!
