most people will believe what people in power tell them to believe because most people just want to fit in with their peers rather than think. when religion no longer serves the interests of people in power it will no longer exist.

The end of religion if that ever happens will not bring about more freedom because freedom does not exist without power and the subjection of all others. The sense of freedom some people perceive is just the complete conformation to a society's ideals. In the case of complete conformation of said ideals any choice you make would be deemed relatively acceptable so you are blind to your lack of freedom.

Science is the power structure of the day, and if history truly does repeat itself, it too will pass. The same as every "truth" before it.

Can you provide an example?

How does this answer my question though?
I asked how society can replace religion, since religion is an aspect of society? It's like saying that a foot can be replaced by a person.

Also, what would be the interests of the corrupt and who are they?

Science exists in thousand of years, I doubt it will just go away like a fashion trend.
Just because lately it has considerably accelerated and it is more potent than before, it doesn't mean that it will soon peak and then die.

When you guys talk about science, are you talking about the modern institutions or the idea of science?  Because empirical thought is not based on any "power structure." Ancient yogis and others back in the day probably used empirical techniques to learn the knowledge that is now the foundation of the new age movement.  As far as i'm concerned, that's science, although you probably couldn't publish a peer reviewed paper on it quite as easily.

Peer-reviewing is one of the constituting phases, I have no idea how you'd conclude that new age is science too.

Even though their empirical techniques probably sucked in comparison today, that's probably what they'll say in 2000 years from now about modern science.  I'm willing to accept it as a form of proto-science.

No new age is not science  I'm just saying that science isn't some construct of modern society, it's a timeless way of accumulating knowledge about the universe.  Sure there's some bullshit involved in the modern process, but the idea is pretty bullet proof.

What is Atheism anyway? Isn't it just another form of belief?

NO

That's what religion wants you to think.  It couldn't be farther from the truth.

They've invented a new word by adding connotation to an old one.  Atheism specifically does not have 'belief,' by definition.

In religion, 'belief' is something that requires 'faith,' which is the acceptance that something that you cannot see exists.  Atheism doesn't fall under this category because it's directly observable that there is no evidence of supreme beings.

Neither is the religion of today.

In the grand scheme of things I think it's pretty obvious science has gradually progressed while religion has gradually become less traditionalist, and is slowly subtracting away beliefs that they realize contradict science.

For example, think about how many Christians took every word of the Bible literally compared to nowadays?  Like it or not, there has been a clear inverse correlation between scientific advancements and overall religious belief over the course of human history.

I know this picture isn't based on any specific data, but it goes along with the point I'm trying to make

More accurately described as a lack thereof.

So how does atheism prevail?  The way I see it, atheism IS science.  It will prevail the same way science did during the renaissance, the enlightment, etc. As we continue to keep discovering how the universe actually works, eventually theism WILL die out.  I'm not saying "philosophies on how to live your life" will ever die out, but the whole concept of any type of personal God surely will.

The only way this could possibly never happen is if we have to start civilization over from scratch for whatever reason :p or go through some sort of second dark ages.

I don't see how a dark age is possible in the information age, but you probably know that.

I see this graph a lot, and it seems people forget that the Dark Ages were brought about by pagan barbarians conquering the Christian Romans.  So I don't see how it's relevant unless you want to argue that Christianity weakened Rome militarily.

Believing in Self is directly proportional to believing in "God" whether one likes it or not. (religious belief not withstanding)

The world is flat... until we get new information.
Perhaps more what I'm trying to say is, you can't make concrete, that which is not concrete.
One can not claim that the information available to us now, is the only information there is.

I'm making no claims to the length of time it will take. Merely that if you think we've finally discovered a way to figure it all out, that's probably a mistake.
