Re: How does Atheism prevail? [Re: Ferris]
    #10833087 -

I don't really see the validity of the whole supposing a war between religion and atheism... One of the key highlights of atheism as I perceive it is that you avoid all the bloodshed and war caused by religious endeavors (crusades, witch trials, etc. etc. etc.).  I think by calling all out war on religious officials kind of debunks that premise.

As far as which is nobler, religion or society...  I think we are still at the point where these really aren't separable in a completely true sense ( which may be a shame).  I  one of religion's functions in the past as kind of like a guidebook put in place by societies to keep their ideals in check.  Granted I think the guidebooks need some revising or updating in a modern sense, but to say society or religion is noble just seems confusing to me.

I think most intelligent people are just trying to get by, without someone telling them what the can do or infringing on their rights.  Whether that involves atheism, spiritualism, or religion should really be a private matter of choice.  I think people are starting to realize that, though very slowly.

Twice now, I've said that's not what I'm saying.  It's a purely hypothetical "I'll fight if I have to."  Religion has historically started wars over the subject.  If you want to ground this in real life, a flash point would be a conservative state like Texas leaving the Union.  Religion would be a secondary factor in a civil war with this basis.  Conservative "values" would be front and center though, which is basically the same thing.

Still though, the "war" is attritional and not conventional and will likely remain that way.

I'll sit back and wait to make my move and chill so long as the damage is null.  But religion is always in attack mode, so it's just a matter of time before SOMEONE has to hit back.  Let most of the atheists be content, but I'll fight back any attempt to infringe upon my own or others' freedoms.

Some aspects of religion are noble actually. Like a egoic projection that what the given believer believes is cherishible till even death in some. Or maybe even better, a demand that others believe the same way, something about it is brute and an archaic aspect of humanity.

Yeah, that's really noble. Rape is too.

The religious in America have been systematically seeking power for centuries.  A lot of this is done on the bureaucratic, judicial and local levels of government as well as the legislatures, where they can implement their ideology through coup d'etats (using the definition of "grabbing power by having men in key positions").

This leads to a direct infringement on my rights.  Look no further than drug prohibition.  I only use the example because its relevant to this site, but there are tons of other examples where religion directly influences my life in a negative way through abuse of power.

I have a right just as they do to fight for my rights, and don't look at me as militant, because they are the ones that have the tendency towards using the military and other brute force to get their ways.  I'm barely planning for defensive action or possibly a last minute preemptive strike (although that's not likely).  This is only if it becomes completely necessary, and if you don't think it can happen, you're ignoring the odds.  The majority of this discussion should be focused on the attritional psychological war that is occurring right now though, not on any potential conventional means (like the use of police to enforce their illegitimate laws).

Everyone is seeking power. You are seeking power. To focus on religion is to miss the big picture.

Society is a set of learned customs.  Religion is the tool by which these customs are passed on.  Remove the "god" from religion and leave the methods through which this tool passes on the learned values of society, and you've got the same end effect.

God was invented to serve a purpose, to fulfill (exploit?) a need for spirituality, which is a word that describes the existential questions a sentient animal has.  This can now be fulfilled with science, with evolution, with astronomy, with philosophy.  Knowledge can be taught at the same time as morality, since the basic fears and needs that drive people to ethical breach can be resolved with the ethics that is inherent to realizing the role an individual has on the scale of things.

I was more trying to indicate the underlying concept... if people way back never gave a fuck about their interpretations of life what would you have them do? Things get taken personally, and hell what more did they know? Sure nowadays dogmas are whacky but I was trying to think more in the origin of any "religious ideal" - namely a religious type of outlook that eventually was cherished so much that individuals got a bit fanatical. Interesting shit and there is something human and noble in it even though it is brute and stupid. Thats all! Sure but yeah we progress from that and can have our wars over less poetic shit

I think I agree with much of what you said, I am mostly just discussing for the sake of it...

No I mean control of their material and emotional environment. Everyone does this. The so called bad guys and you too. Your "freedom" will always come at the loss to some other form of life.

That's total assumption of motivational factors.  Religion isn't bad because they have power and I don't, they're bad because they have power and they abuse it.  I'm not going to worry myself with the ethical concerns of my interests' new-found responsibility to fill the power gap.  I'd just as soon let rational responsible people sit and discuss what to replace it with, so long as it's not more religion that replaces it.

Sounds like your lack of power is upsetting to me as well.

They abuse their power, because you don't agree with the useage.
You can't please everyone, no matter what you do.
Good luck with your attempts to do so, but I'm pretty sure Icelander is right. Your "freedom" will always come at the cost of others'.

If the freedom of truth costs others the "right" for people to advance fiction, I can sleep at night.  They can retain their freedom of speech, but once the mechanisms are removed for speech that forces others to follow, there isn't much reason left to believe, as the truth of whether there is a god that communes with us or not is blatantly obvious (there isn't).

Human's aren't really very rational. You assume you are but that is only an assumption and a more rational person would easily point your irrational beliefs out to you.

While I agree that religion is irrational, I also know almost anything can be made into a religion or treated as if it were.

So long as it's a religion based on humanism and not on god.  The concept of god diffuses personal responsibility and twists morals.  Humanism is geared directly towards solving both of those issues.

While having two separate meanings they integrate in a way that is quite symbiotic to the interests of the corrupt.

Holy massive generalization batman!

Theistic worldviews can very much support what we call a moral lifestyle. Granted it can depend on the given religion and interpretation.

They might be a bit twisted to some, and many are but your statement seems totally baseless, just depends where you are looking. Religious and nonreligious people can be tyrants and whatnot.

But yes a more scientific and humanistic view is perhaps most accorded to an ideal of pursuing truth/logic and which is noble in its own sense.

More specifically, morality doesn't really exist, only ethics.  Morality is made up by man, whereas ethics is intrinsic to being human.  Morality often bases itself off ethics, but in attaching to a concept of god, its absoluteness corrupts these concepts.

I wasn't aware that science was the only truth. Why didn't I get the memo?
Science is the power structure of the day, and if history truly does repeat itself, it too will pass. The same as every "truth" before it.
