I personally don't obviously they are in a great deal of pain in some sort of way.  you?

Personally, I think suicide is extremely selfish. I might be biased because I've been through a loss in that way. It is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. All issues someone has can be helped. The only thing it does is hurt the people that care about you IMO

Yes it is very selfish in most cases, but if you are living a pointless life with no hope like being an inmate in SUPERMAX or dying of some sort of super painful debilitating disease than it's an option IMHO

Emile Durkheim once published a very interesting book on suicide and its cultural foundations.  He identified four different types of suicide:

1.  Egoistic:  These suicides come from a breakdown of social integration, where an individual feels increasingly isolated from others.  This occurs most often in more individualistic societies(like ours).

2.  Altruistic:  This occurs in more integrated, collectivist societies.  Suicide, Durkheim found, is much more rare in such societies.  However, one exception is when an individual is socially expected to commit suicide(think seppuku).

3.  Anomic:  This occurs in societies where there is a breakdown of moral regulation, and legitimate aspirations are ill-defined, leading to a sense of meaninglessness.

4.  Fatalistic  This occurs in overly oppressive societies, where death is considered preferable to living in such a society.  Suicides in prison would be a good example.

I don't think it's really selfish, they just don't want to be hurt. It would be selfish if your death wouldn't bother them, and they still wanted you to be living a life of suffering.

I guess I just don't like the word selfish used in cases of suicide... seems like :blah:

Its an evaluative term that seems illogical for suicide... and even then what isn't selfish - unegotistic action!? :tongue2:


Only sort of case I can think of right now that would sorta resemble selfishness in suicide would be if say like paps on the prairie killed himself with the last bullet left in the gun and left his stranded family to be raped and murdered by Indians :lol:

Yeah, everything we do is selfish, but to different degrees.

Selfish to have the kids in the first place. Fact is, if anyone is that emotionally reliant it's going to totally crush them then that is their problem and their lot. This is why I don't get so attached to humans any more.

It would be very hard for me to see any reason to have a kid that wasn't selfish. He doesn't exist yet so there's nothing to be selfless about.

I do think it's a mean spirited thing to abandon a child as it's clear they need the emotional support and you put them in that position.

It's more selfish to make assumptions about other people that you don't know. There's no way to know for sure what someone is going through and any of you could find yourselves thinking of suicide someday depending on how your circumstances change. I bet a lot of people that resort to suicide once thought they would never let themselves get that low.
