"suicide is the cowards way out"...
    #13296498 -

ive never understood why people say this

doesn't it assume that life is inherently good and meaningful?

I don't think so, I think it only assumes that there it is cowardly to quit, and that suicide is necesarily quiting.

I don't buy this either, never made any sense to me.  A friend of my Aunt is Chinese (PRC), and his grandfather killed himself during the cultural revolution.

He was determined to be a reactionary element (had a small factory) or some such nonsense and went into hiding.  After saying goodbye to his family he killed himself- in his suicide note he expressed sorrow but said, rightly, that he knew his family would be harrased and beaten/killed untill the Communist Party found him, and that the only way out was to kill himself so that the Communist Party found his body, knew he was dead, and didn't need to torture his family to get them to talk or try and get him to turn himself in to stop the torture of his kin.  (not that Stalinist regimes don't kill several generations at times, especially in N. Korea, but thats a seperate matter)

In this situation, it seems quite a brave thing to do to kill yourself, no?

That's a stupid saying IMO. It's machismo telling someone hating their life to man up and keep living in misery.

It's akin to telling someone in a burning house that running out is the cowards way out.

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

exactly! sounds brave to me.

how can people judge other people if they dont know the motivations behind their actions?

I was always told suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I bet no one disagrees with that. Unless your terminally ill...

hahahahaha! I love this! I think I remember reading somewhere a paper concerning the right to suicide; even in non-terminal cases. I didn't read all the way through it, but it's major point I think was: "What does one own, if not one's own life?" This was mostly in response to the practice of hospitalizing suicidal people; claiming that the hospitals/staff were interfering with a patient's fundamental human rights. I don't want to condone suicide but I have to agree with this. Not to mention exceptions such as johnm214 pointed out.

No it assumes people fear death. And for anyone to choose the unacceptable willingly is too much for some to handle.

Suicide can be seen as a selfish act if you consider the impact on friends and relatives. Imagine the grief / guilt inflicted on a loving parent whose child has killed themselves.

However, it's churlish to judge suicidal people or label them cowards as by definition they're suffering extreme stress and depression and are unable to cope.

Also some forms of suicide are much more selfish / cowardly than others. For eg throwing yourself under a train - think of the poor, traumatised bastard who has to scrape your remains off the tracks and bag you up. It's fair enough if you want to escape this life, but don't pass your trauma on to others any more than is absolutely necessary.

dude definitley (obviously) depends on the person.

on here a few days or weeks ago there was that post about that dude who wrote a looooong ass "suicide note"...more like a suicide study, and i can't say that i could disagree with his assessment.

many times when i was younger, up late at night, i would stare into the kitchen, going back and forth whether or not i should cut my wrists and end my life just to see what REALLY happens.

you know, if he was at peace and REALLY doing this for what he believed in...then who cares?

also, what's anyone going to do about it? lol

yeh i am aware of this kind of reasoning... it just seems fucking stupid

i mean yeh obviously this action will have some sort of impact on the world just as every other action does. just because people will not be able to procure their own happiness/comfort from the existence of your severely depressed physical manifestation does not make this a selfish act imo
if you consider all the other things that people do in in this fucked up place suicide is heroic by comparison

the argument that 'suicide is selfish' that people seem to self righteously spout just seems poorly informed, unsympathetic and, well, selfish

icelander is right some people just cant face their own death anxiety  :icanthearyou:

rofl you say that like its really easy. Pure intellectualization. I know that as much as I can rationalize how stupid it is, whenever I let my guard down I freak the fuck out.

If you had NO death anxiety, you wouldn't be worried about letting the clock run out by itself.
