ive never understood why people say this

doesn't it assume that life is inherently good and meaningful?

No it assumes people fear death. And for anyone to choose the unacceptable willingly is too much for some to handle.

Could be both too, you know :pipesmoke:

If you had no death anxiety you'd off yourself like ain't no thing.

Are you connected to yourself?!?!?!?!?!

So being scared of death is the only thing that keeps you alive??

What about all the wonderful things in life?

I'm connected to myself. Are you connected to yourself?

I think this is true for many miserable people, yes.

I'm sure, but that does nothing to prove that overcoming death anxiety would automatically mean suicide.

It might if you were convinced the universe is nihilistic. Why keep living if you have no death anxiety and are convinced that your psyche will vanish when you die. It's pointless to keep living then.

Even if it was pointless to keep living, couldn't you just become a hedonist instead? It doesn't follow that you would automatically kill yourself because you overcame your fear of death and had a nihilistic outlook. nihilism can be quite liberating.

I fully agree:thumbup: If one could overcome death anxiety and had no physical pain then life could well become subjectively pleasurable.

hey i think a nihilist could still act in the world in what people would understand to be 'meaningful ways' and still could find happiness from those acts... they just would just be aware that meaning is illusory and empty (hence they are liberated to act in any way they wish rather than being tied to inertia or suicide)

right?

I meant nihilism in a broad existential sense, as in "there is no objective purpose or meaning to life". Which I believe is true personally.

I was always told suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I bet no one disagrees with that. Unless your terminally ill...

I never thought this statement was a good deterrent. I mean, isn't a solution a good thing? And therefore, even better if it's permenant? And for many, the problem is only temporary to the extent that life is temporary. Even if a problem is temporary, there are likely to be plenty of other temporary problems throughout a persons life.

So I don't know that I agree with the statement, and I certainly don't think that there is much of a point to it.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.
