1, 2B (and maybe 6 and 7) are Tubaria furfuracea.

3 and 4 are Psathyrella gracilis.

Dunno about 5.

8 is Stropharia ambigua.

9 is Hypholoma fasciculare, also known as "Sulfur Tufts".

Rain is back.

Went on a short hunt. Tubaria, Hypholoma, Psathyrella, Mycena.... That about sums it up.

Checked one of my patches. zilch. The neighboring Tubaria and Hypholoma species have just begun to fruit. The Actives should be showing up shortly.

nope, they weren't there 2 weeks ago. I should mention that i see the same thing as others here mostly..Most places there is nothing...There's not really even many red hypholomas yet. That one spot is just really agressive

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

so there is some hope. one of my patches got completly thrashed aboiut a week ago. its all torn up. i was consideringn pileing more wood chips on top of the mycelium to protect them so hupfuly next year they will grow larger next season. come on mycelium gods!

I figured this would be amsuing to Bay Area folks, and i'm sure it's ok to post because THERE ARE NO ACTIVES HERE!






all this is, is a bunch of red hypholomas, in the middle of downtown San Francisco. The Powell Street cable cars are just at the top of the escalator there, and you can see the new Westfield Shopping Center across the street (Nordstrom)

I'd guess at least 10,000 people go up and down these escalators every day, so it's not like it's hidden or anything, and probably waaay more people notice this than would see it here anyway.

I think they put in these chips a couple years ago, or in the middle of last year, and you'll notice, this place gets almost no direct sunlight during the day, so it doesn't dry out like most places, and it's a little protected from the dry wind..

that's pretty much the only reason why anything is fruiting...This is the second fruiting now, and even these dissapeared during january, and now they cam back a little bit

if you're in the area, it is kind of neat to just see it, in the middle of everything like this. You know that actives would never make it past the pin stage here if that ever happened...LOL

still, just for the sheer novelty of it it, there ya go

Cool pic. There are a bunch of woodchipped places in Downtown SF, most people don't really notice them (I know I didn't before I started hunting)

Everyone talks about the wood chips, but that is where everyone is looking too. Almost all of my finds are in some sort of grass or ivy. The only reason i find them is because my friend and i have been documenting the growth of our old patches and finding where the new patches are being spread about. That and every year i get a better understanding of ideal growing environments for my active picking purposes.

If you are looking in wood chips that is where Cyanescens and most actives grow. Wood chips are mushroom food. Never the less, this is also a sign of cosmetic human activity, and was put there for someone to notice how nice it looks. I am sure it helps the plants suppress the growth of unsightly weeds as well. This creates lots of attention and competition from authority figures and fellow pickers. Easier to get caught picking and easier to get robbed of your baby pins you left to mature for the next trip.

Grass and ivy provide excellent high humidity micro-climates for those dry winters like 'us' until last week. It also keeps the mushrooms from drying out so quick by protecting it from dry winds and holding the humidity. Basically preserving your shrooms in their fresh state longer. They also provide a nice little hiding spot so others may pass them up. This also makes the hunt more of an actual hunt. more satisfying in the end.

One of my best finds was in a small depression of over grown grass in late March to early April. Over 150 picked and no wood chips in sight. The trees present are much more important i think, they provide naturalized wood chips in a much more naturalized environment IMO.

hunted about 2 hours for chanterelles, found 9. Also found 4 cyanescens. what the fuck rain...

:grin: Thanks Auweia!!! I still admire your one pic in the woodchips on the side of the road.  Makes me drool every time i see it.  How did you pick all those without someone noticing ???  :naughty:

Anyways i went to SF yesterday thinking that after all this rain it would be a good day to go. NOT FOR ME :sad: When we jumped out of the care everything looked perfect! We were happy, plenty of moisture, but not many mushrooms. I came back with 7 mushrooms the worst day i ever had.  Not to mention i had to split with my buddy who i always go with, i mean he did show me the spots..... But i got to spray down some good spots with my spore water. So it wasn't all for nothing. And i got a good stick of mycellium to continue some projects and planting.

Anyways i only got 2 pics, both in grass, as well as all my finds. Nothing was found in wood chips. Not to say that they weren't growing there though. 

I can only assume that the mushrooms are so used to flushing a certain time of year that they will flush whenever they get that little bit of water at the appropraite time. Even though it may not be a really good flush i guess it still is a flush.

Will this shitty winter effect next years mushroom harvest in some way?


I would imagine the lack of spores being produced may effect new patches developing next spring.

mycelium is pretty adaptive. i'm not worried

my biggest worry is the gardners or whomever tends to the gardening in lots of places. i find that huge areas of land get constantly sprayed with pesticides...as if mushrooms werent poisonous enough :mrt: .....
