Thanks urbanism. It was still a good trip. I also tend to go for the pictures as well as spreading the spores and mapping developing spots.  Getting high later is just a plus really.

pcyanescens, next year won't be affected..the plants are still down there under the ground and doing fine, they're just not fruiting right now. These things can hibernate a loong time without fruiting..it's just messed up weather...to dry for too long, too little rain.

I'm not convinced it's over yet tho..Rain come sunday and into next week

Thanks auweia. That is what my friend thinks too, if we get some more rain then they could pop up. I believe this too, like i said some of my best picking was in i think April 1st. Unheard of by my friend that showed me the spots, but i got lots that day. More then 100

The only thing about late flushes is that the grass doesn't stop growing. It just gets harder and harder from here on out. If you don't have your spots scouted already you are most likely walking by more mushrooms then you can see. Maybe even stepping on more then you can see.

Hey guys, I'm new to the whole mushroom hunting scene but I wanna get into it ASAP! I'm in the east bay (Castro Valley), and midnight it was raining pretty hard all the way through the night and into this morning.

Should I start my hunt the day after it rained, or what?

And I was also wondering if anyone in the East Bay had some nice spots they'd be willing to share.

thanks guys

ok, i'll start by saying that you can not ask for locations on this site. it's against the rules. avoid asking for hunting partners in the hunting forum aswell.

the majority of spots seem to still be dry, even since the last few bouts of rain, so pickings will be slim. you would probably want to focus on areas with dense plant cover, like thick grass, but where there is still a large amount of woody material or verry humus rich soil composition.

focus on the proper identification of Psilocybe cyanescens, and while you're at it, Panaeolus subbalteatus, Gymnopilus luteofolius couldn't hurt aswell. research identification features, habitat and growing conditions and you'll know what to look for and where and when to look for them. chances are you'll have untill next fall to make any decent finds of cyans, but you never know.

google.com and the shroomery forums' search will be your best friends in this matter, and the mushroom hunting FAQ [the 'Find Mushrooms' section of the mushroom information manu at the top nav bar on this site] will be of great use aswell

Sorry about asking for locations - won't happen again.

I'm gonna have my first run at hunting today. I live right on the edge of a canyon with lots and lots of dense forest areas.

Another question: What is the process once you find the shrooms? Do you come back later when they're matured?

Thanks and wish me luck.

dense forest will not be ideal for P. cyanescens, which tend to grow predominantly in man-made environments but would be ideal for many non-active species, including some great edibles.

good identification generaly requires mature specimens, but in some cases also requires, and will usualy benefit from a selection of specimens in varrying stages of maturity.

the proccess generaly requires a spore print be taken, from which point - and with other features- an identification to family or genus can be made. from this point, you would want to narrow the identification down step by step if need be, untill a species is determined. after spore color, which features will be most important will varry with circumstance. a good book or internet resource with keys of some sort makes this much more simple.

you will want to get used to searching for this kind of info online, as internet searches are only as good as the approach the querrier takes.

you should start with the order agaricales [the gilled fleshy fungi with developed central stipes from the basidiomecets.

search 'key to agaricales' and use that to key out a gilled mushroom you find as far as the key lets you. if you have trouble on any term used, google it. every time you come to new terminology, never assume it is unimportant, just look it up. before you know it, you will have the language down, which is important because it is the desriptive terminology used to describe fungi, and largely to describe most organisms explicitly.
