they always turn blue. Check ggp and you will find them. They grow everywhere in the park except the mowed playing fields. Well they grow there also but they get cut down a lot.
Its a good time, it will be better this weekend once the wind dies down and the fog layer comes back. Hunting with clear skies sucks. You need the shade of the fog so your eyes can adjust to looking for things buried in the grass

Here are some of my fins over the last two days.

This cluster is interesting. The two on the left hand side are mature cyanescens growing in grass. The next cluster was quite beefy and that mycelium is currently being spawn for transplant elsewhere.

The rest are random shots of some of the other finds.

I don't know about you, but I am sure that I would if I went. If you didn't have any luck, I would say you were not looking hard enough.

Nice score! Those are some massive, healthy looking cyans...
As far as the 'random shots', were any of those active? The third one looks like a wavy cap, but I've come across lots of look alikes that don't bruise blue...

They were all cyans with the exception of the last shot.

I'd like to offer microscopy workups of any obviously bluing finds that also have a good photo. If enough dried samples are sent in, the taxonomy of the various species around SF should become more clear. Only a few dried gills are necessary for a preliminary workup. PM me for mailing details and if you want to be associated (by nickname) with the microscopy composite that will be generated. Examples of which can be viewed here.

Hello fellow Hunters,
I just got back from a few hour foray in GGP and came back with some interesting finds... I wish my digital camera wasn't having issues so I could post some pics. But, I have questions about the bluing rxn. All specimins (8) have wavy caps, stems 1-3 cm, young specimins have light brown gills, and an older looking one has dark brown gills. The older one has some obvious bluing going on. The others... well, one has a couple small hints of blue. The others have none at all. So my question is, does the bluing typically happen immediately, or can it occur over time? I'm getting ready to run some spore prints. I'd like to think these are cyans... but still not sure. Any help?
thanks.

Sounds like you might have some Tubarias. Take spore prints, i assume the ones without bluing will have orange/rusty spore prints. Any cyans with evident bluing should have a purple/brown print. The bluing is pretty fast and pretty intense.

Here is a comparison of a Tubaria (left) and a Ps. cyanescen (right).

Thanks. I'm thinking the one with the obvious bluing was a cyan. But, the others probably Tuberia, as you mentioned. Still waiting on the prints. Is it typical for them (tuberis and ps. cyans) to grow pretty closely together?

Hey everyone, I went hunting about a week or two ago at GGP. I started my search where highway one intersected Fulton, which is on the half of the park closest to the ocean. I didn't find much when I looked around the park for a couple hours. Just lots if in-actives, however I got lucky and found small mature cyans hiding under a big tree in short grass. I'm going again tomorrow to get a better look around GGP. I already read previously in this thread to check the tall grasses because they hide there, and of course wood chips, but does anyone else have any good hints for GGP? Does it matter if I'm at the end closest to the bay or the end farther away? I cant seem to find a patch.

Burton rebel,
Nice finds. We picked a whole bunch of fibs on our way down and left them in a somewhat hidden pile and came back the following day and they were gone. Hopefully the wind blew them away because the patch that they came from is huge!!! Bigger then my stunzi score

please, no soliciting hunting partners in the hunting forum.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Nice finds...
But what are these? They kind of look like huge Psilocybe Bohemica but I guess you're from the US (it's the San Fran thread here :-))and as far as know they don't grow there. As I said, as far as I know ;-)

i hope it was the wind too because that sounds horribly disapointing that someone found your pickings and your spot. we gotta go hunting soon...
i'm uncertain as to what they are. the caps remind me of the unclassified "friscosa", but i've never found something so potent. I was also thinking that they could be fibrillosa. I've never heard of Psilocybe Bohemica growing anywhere near my region, but i wouldnt be suprized. spore prints at next fruiting forsure.
