Re: What I don't get.... [Re: Sinbad]

If Christians actually followed the teachings directly attributed to Christ, I wouldn't have a single objection to their religion.

The fact that they follow the teachings of ancient, angry, bigots is worthy of objection. I was questioning these teachings, which he was parroting, even though he added disclaimers.

Please quote where he parroted any of these said teachings, because i cant find them anywhere? As far as i was aware, he was merely sharing his point of view.

Bottom line is that I am NOT to judge others at best, nor am I to stand in the way of "sinners" (those who miss the mark) so either way, I thank God that all the girls I felt lust for before I calmed down won't be counted against me as He is a FORGIVING God.

The bolded sections parrot religious teachings which say being gay is sinning, as is lusting after girls.  As I said, he did include disclaimers, but I was addressing the assertions regarding what constitutes sin:

I'm going based on the belief that being gay is a "sin".

The Word says God created marriage to bring forth godly children.

I questioned whether marriage which does not produce children would be considered sinful, and he answered that it would not.

As I said, I think that it is important to question and examine dogmatic, bigoted beliefs, even when the poster expressing those beliefs also expresses their personal intention to refrain from judgmentally applying those beliefs.  This does not constitute my being "unforgiving" to those who profess to being religious.

The notion that all human beings are inherently sinful is the view of Christianity. If you can understand this main point, you can see how the rest might follow. Being in a Christian marriage, procreating and raising your children within the faith, is being in the service of God. Pleasing God through good action and loving service are the only actions that Christian's conceive of as being pure, or inherently "unsinful". This is generally the view of Christianity, as it is.

Re: What I don't get.... [Re: Veritas]

"My Religion" programs me with nothing. I never went to church growing up, although I tried to find one that felt right in my spirit, but could not. I am NOT your run of the mill right winger. I think for myself. I have no spiritual authorities, nor church leadership that I look up to. I have a couple of Christians who I know are on the right path that I speak to as friends. I was born to a pagan. I have ALWAYS believed in Who is turning out to be the Christian God, and have prayed every day of my life since I can remember clearly (mid 2's). I rejected witchcraft instinctively because it FELT wrong. Not all of it, but most.
On the other hand, a lot of what is accepted by Christians to be truth is not. And that's where I come to the impasse of what do I claim? In the bible Christ lays it down with a firm hand that we "invalidate the Word of God for the sake of our tradition" and that "their lips are close to Me but their hearts are far from Me" and it's true. Too true. The question is, why does the bible say being gay is a sin? Well, to the Christian God it is. HOWEVER, so are a lot of other things. And to focus on the question of sin is the problem. Believe in God or not, Christian or not, gay or not, we all miss the mark, and I am told to love as I want to be loved. So it's a mindset more than a dogma. I don't focus on what may or may not be a sin, I focus on what is good about a person (which is self evident) and leave the rest to that person and his/her God. Those are the commandments I understand. And that is what I strive to do.
Personally I don't care if someone's gay or straight. I don't give a rat's arse about anyone's sex life but mine and my wife's.   As a final note, I know a couple of young dudes who are AMAZING Christians and "happen" to be gay. Of course the "church" and the crowd around their town loves them, and when the time is right, they're going to let it be known. I can't wait to see that!!  Because if the God I pray to is going to overlook who these young men are, and what they do, and banish them to hell ala' Fred Phelps' belief, than the God I pray to and know is either lying or misunderstood for the sake of our traditions. I'm betting on the latter.

Peace.

I didn't read through all your posts until I replied. I just want to say think nothing of you challenging my beliefs, it's good and healthy I think. I guess what it comes down to is that you can make the bible say anything if you twist it, chop it, shake it up enough. However to me, at this stage of the game, I believe the scripture that says, "Love conquers all" sums it ALL up. So now I'm trying to learn and practice, and hopefully perfect my Agape' as the "love" I was taught as a child (as my true childlike love was being systematically destroyed) was not love at all but rather a camouflage of actions and words to advance myself and those whom I chose to align myself with. Thanks for the interesting posts.

I'm as Christian as they get and here's my take...

I'm married and had best be spending all the time and effort I have on loving up my girl, not on what others do, gay or straight or otherwise. Period. Yup, that's about it. Personally, I'm thankful that I've never had the desire to do a man, because I'm straight. Maybe gays find chicks to be a turn off in the same way, I'll never know. Bottom line is that I am NOT to judge others at best, nor am I to stand in the way of "sinners" (those who miss the mark) so either way, I thank God that all the girls I felt lust for before I calmed down won't be counted against me as He is a FORGIVING God. We all miss the mark and those who "hate" gays I figure are part of that group of boys who have done some gayness (or wanna) and play out their hatred of themselves on others.

God is LOVE.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I'm working on it. It's a strange situation to be in considering the fact that I'm very much a spirit led individual, and I tend to get flippant about things. Yet I am doing my best to understand and follow the teachings of the bible and especially of Christ, but most "hard core" Christians don't seem to have a lot of love for the Word when it comes to their lives but are great at using it to justify all sorts of wacky beliefs. Of course on the other hand, there's a lot of hatred/anger at "Christianity", and I understand, oh please believe me I do. Just yesterday I had to fight to keep my mouth shut at a prayer group when some voodoo type talk started floating around... It's a battle.
Anyway, I hope to stay involved on this part of the Shroomery, and as I said before, please feel free to ask for clarification or call me out if what I'm saying sounds off as my first post somewhat did. I tend to forget the drastic change in mindset from my daily audience and my approach may suggest a belief pattern that I do not have.
Take care all!!
