gaining enlightenment the old fashioned way
    #5090887 -

recently i met a drifter through my g/f, he had just returned from india studying under a guru. as i listened to his stories of india and his studying i started to wonder how i could go about doing this myself. i am very interested in leaving the states and learning the spirituality aspect of things under a spiritual guide. i always thought it would be great to go to south america and study under a shaman somewhere dep in the heart of the jungle, and hearing his stories inspired me to actually follow my dream instead of just dreaming about my dream....

how would one go about doing this. i could very easily book a plane ticket to india and go walk around, but i wouldnt know where to start on locating a guru, being taken under someones wings and so on. i would ask the little krishna kid (as i called him) but he has drifted elsewhere to seek out more physical aspects of this world. has anyone here ever done this, how would you go about it??? any info would be a great help.

thanks

Although it's not my thing, I have read about it enough. Go down to where you plan to find this teacher. Live in the area until accepted by the locals. Once they accept you then they will send you to the real deal. Or something like that.

Download the movie last hippie standing. It's about the Indian town of Goa where a bunch of hippies started to flock to in the 60's, some are still there, but it's turned into more of a rave type thing now. Might be a good place to start though.

You are assuming several things not in evidence:

1. That 'genuine' mystics/gurus/shamans exist.

2. That asleep people could recognize one who is awake.

3. That you truly want your ego destroyed and are willing to do the hard work. There will be no miracle blessing.

first of all i agree that until one is willing to do the hard work in their current location they should not seek to move elsewhere but do you realize that you are also assuming that he is assuming all those things? setting out on his expedition would be one way to test the validity of those statements. whatever happens, he is sure to learn something.

1. That 'genuine' mystics/gurus/shamans exist.

Classifying such a person as 'genuine' is a pretty subjective term, and is closely tied to one's personal beliefs and tolerances. You may believe yourself genuinely wise while others view you as a stubborn fool. The same works in reverse. There are a lot of people that I would personally consider 'genuine' mystics/gurus/shamans. Just because someone may not be literally contacting spirits or whatever doesn't mean that they are not wise in their own ways, or that they couldn't teach one useful life skills or offer meaningful experiences.

2. That asleep people could recognize one who is awake.
I think such a person could be recognized well enough. If I wanted to find someone that could explain medicine to me I would look for a person that was a respected doctor with a history of good results. Likewise, if looking for a guru/whatever I'd try to find one that seemed wise and lived a life that I respected and felt that I could learn from. Perhaps to do so would be deluding oneself, but not everyone is so concerned about literal, rational truth and correctness as yourself. If it works, it works.

3. That you truly want your ego destroyed and are willing to do the hard work. There will be no miracle blessing.
Good point. I'm not even going to argue that one.

Uh huh. Millions have followed Swaggart, Rajneesh, Popov, Muktananda and other frauds. Discernment is a rare quality.

Now you're the one making unfair assumptions, oh great Swami. Showing an interest in finding spiritual guidance does not make someone incapable of good judgment. Discernment may be a rare quality, but I think you're too quick to assume that someone lacks it if they don't happen to have the same outlook on things as you do.

A bunch of stupid people believe a bunch of stupid things. It happens. Just don't be so quick in shoving someone into such a category without specific evidence.

millions of people do all kinds of stupid things. does that mean no one is capable of acting intelligently?

well of course swami. if they didn't believe they were making the right decision they wouldn't make that decision. we can only live and learn.

my point is that we each have to follow our assesment of the truth, we can only do our best and if we are wrong we learn from the mistake. by comming here at least this person is exposing themself to differing viewpoints.

accessd by a process of looking inside to see what you want
and unlearning those habits that are undignified

note that
this will happen whichever adventure you take
but it has to be the main idea
so
it will even happen as you savour fake saints and/or lovers
and later recover from the shame learning to be human
and
as you come to do the work that suits your abilities.

i agree. that's what i intend to seek out though. find out for myself.

2. That asleep people could recognize one who is awake.

who said i am asleep. sometimes we drift in and out of sleep with no control. one may be awake yet keep their eyes closed, and one may sleep with their eyes wide open. i think i am between spaces, i am looking to be awakened and have my eyes opened.

3. That you truly want your ego destroyed and are willing to do the hard work. There will be no miracle blessing.

ego death is the best way to be truly humbled. IMO. how can i achieve this on my own. on trips i get the ego death, but come back feeling not so humbled.

at this point i see 2 paths in my life. one of the military and travel and leaving it all behind, or one of enlightenment and travel of other sorts.. it's coming time to choose a path or else i will just stall at the fork in the road.
i know it isn't exactly the easiest thing to just up and find a guide, but i think if one truly seeks it they can. i don't remember the exact quote or where i heard it from but, "if god sees you taking a step towards him he will come running 100 steps to meet you."

i hope this holds true. i understand that i must give of myself, but i do not yet understand in what way.

Be careful, there are a lot of con artists out there that sell snake oil that they claim will lead you to the way. The more somebody has the correct answer for you, the more likely they are to take advantage of you. The person that continually warns you how hard it is, that tries to talk you out of it, that seems almost rude in wanting you to go away... that is the person that can help you the most.

How is parroting equal to thinking?

i don't remember the exact quote or where i heard it from but, "if god sees you taking a step towards him he will come running 100 steps to meet you."
Have you never heard things that were untrue? If so, why is this quaint saying more likely to be true?

i have heard many things to be untrue, but i have hope that if a person has faith then they can find their way. thats how i take that little quote. if you truly believe and try to achieve then things will fall in to place.
