My understanding is that an Australian researcher, Alistair McTaggart, has been sequencing subaeruginosa and comparing it to cyanescens and azurescens. His findings seem to suggest that they nestle into the sub genome enough that they aren't separate species, but I'm sure someone else might have a more nuanced understanding of it.

Cyanescens, azurescens, allenii, and weraroa are all distinct, and from what I can tell can be told apart by ITS region(I know very little about genetics) and macroscopically, but not microscopically. maybe that’s not enough to say they are different species🤷🏻, if it is than subaeruginosa would likely have to be split up into many more species. I think we can all agree that they at least share a very close common ancestor. The subsectiods has clear features that could separate it from cyanescens, but I believe the ITS is identical and has never been agreed on as a separate species.  Look at the huge variety of cubes, shitake, and oysters. You’ve got cubes of many different shapes and colors, different color and size spores yet no one would consider breaking penis envy, golden teacher, and red boy into different species. Anyone who’s grown cubes for any amount of time can tell your genetics apart from Petri dish to harvest.
I’m pretty sure the ITS of pelliculosa and firmentaria are identical, but they are clearly different species that do very different things, so ITS alone may not be the best tool to differentiate between some fungi. I don’t know, if I made a false statement I would like to know.
I think some of the important things to look at with cyanescens azurescens and allenii is that their habitat in the north is almost always altered, such as woodchip beds, gardens, and non native dune grass.
It’s really neat to wonder how these things got to and from where they end up.

This video is probably the best explanation of how these things could have got from the southern hemisphere to the north.

This was just a couple clusters and some were turning blue from the cold. We have a warm week and a few more clusters are maturing. These things grow like crazy once you get em going. I’m not in the PNW, I’m in the mid-west… and the weather is nutty

Also I wanted to say thank you to Nef/Singularfusion for the cyanescens print. I haven't gotten them to fruit yet, but the bed looks good. Maybe next year I will have some luck.

Since the season is almost over, when do you "feed" your patches? Being my bed is about 5-6 inches deep do I wait a year to feed or do I throw a bit on top, maybe another inch of chips? I'm also thinking about covering the chip bed with soil and planting grass on top. It's that a good idea or no?

From my observations here Bigworm, it does not matter when chips are added, except for obviously that is not desired right before fruiting or delays or non-fruiting may happen

The conventional wisdom says to feed them in spring, but I also felt like I should cover them with something to protect them from winter before, so some of my beds got wood right as the season finished and snow and freeze hit. All fruited the next season without incident. So I am not sure if it matters honestly, but if the guys with years of WL experience say to do that in spring then it may be worth listening

The soil with grass is my go to method, I do it pretty much like a thick casing layer. The cheap 3 dollar a bag potting soil that is made from composted forest products and a wood fibre peat replacement. You can see little flecks of wood in it. They fucking love this material. The casing layer from the last year then is lost the next season as I start layering the wood and soil right on top, I give zero shits about the grass, as does the myc. It all gets swallowed up as a I build it up with layers over the early part of the season and then put the same casing on again on top, planted with fresh grass seed. I am just using dirt cheap lawn seed, but there may be grasses with a taller and leaner character that are better suited to this, I am still playing with different cover materials

I still have much to learn and have nailed cyans but the rest of the clade has been more of a challenge for me here, but above has been my experience of things so far. Some pics in my gallery. Hope that managed to be helpful to you anyway mate

Ps. subaeruginosa in mid-Sweden. Unfortunately, cold temperatures have arrived now and mushroom season is over. For some reason, the mushrooms hardly dropped any spores for prints this year, maybe due to the early frost.

The first one is a small hole that was filled with colonized aspen wood chips in spring 2023. The fruits only came from the perimeter of the hole.

October 8th


October 9th, frost came in the night. The mushrooms turned blue in the afternoon.

A few days later, the mushrooms were gone, probably eaten by deer :crazy:

Another patch, I think from 2022 or maybe also spring 2023. Photos from mid-October to mid-November 2023.


Yet another patch that was started in 2019 (see https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27665978#27665978). It only gave a few mushrooms this year.


Some neglected colonized aspen chips with blueing rhizomorphs :smile:

Thats a great looking patch. Trying similar in Norway. Try giving those babies some manure of some kind next year, organic ku kompost perhaps. Any kind of organic animal fertilizer seems to do the trick often.
