Ok so I got a question:

Do we need to stick to PF Tek for this thread or can we play a little?  I have some ideas for a cake recipe...

I wait for pins before birthing the cakes and usually have fruits in a couple of days. You’re in a wait and see situation now so don’t be making a lot of changes trying to help things along.

I think I'll try that approach next time. I was trying to follow the latest PF Tek to a T on my first go around and that just says wait at least 7 days after colonization before birthing. I didn't want to go too much longer but I know now that it really wouldn't have hurt anything to wait longer.

In your experience, how long after your jar initially looks colonized (completely white with myc) does it take for pins to start forming in the jar?

And yep - to your last point now I am just going to leave my tubs as is and give my cakes ~1 mist a day assuming they don't otherwise look overly dry or wet.

Update

We have lots of pins and at least one chonker.
We also have a party crasher. 😆
Not sure what flavor it is, it's a pretty color green though. It isn't moving quickly, so I'm not sweating it for now.










Nuther update

The party crasher doesn't seem to be causing any trouble, so we're not worried about them for now.
I bet you can guess which one is getting cloned first. 😆

Looks like Your cake shrunk in the jar, creating space between the cake and the jar wall, and the mycelium colonizes this space.

Yes :smile: The cake started shrinking quickly because it's loosely packed inside. But the mycelium will eat everything and shrink the whole cake more. Then wait another 5 days after full colonization and you're good to go

I've never birthed anything that wasnt wide mouth.. It is said that it can give you lots of trouble. But I have seen others do it and it turn out okay. I think maybe it's just the hand you're dealt.

If you pop over to the cake wars 2025 there's a few people over there that did it..

In the future stick with half pint Wide Mouth Jars and you won't ever have to worry about running into birthing issues.

Sorry I just realized you were asking a different question.

No do not birth  that yet.  that needs to fully colonize all the way around and through.

Perfect that's the right idea. However those gaps might be a little big and cause you to dry out. You'll have to play with it a bit to dial in.

I would use something a little smaller than those paper towels.  maybe some sticky tack or a small folded over a piece of tape or paper or something.

Just to give you Like A quarter to a half inch Gap maybe.  And do it on the adjacent side as well so you have some air flow in more than just that one corner.

These boxes look expensive, so I assume that's why you don't want to make holes, but you can definitely find similar-sized boxes for pennies somewhere. I have large containers from Jysk for literally $3 to 5 $ each, perfect for making holes :wink:

Also just for future reference holes can always be covered with tape and then they're non-existent.

I typically grow everything un modified because my environment allows me to. but I do have one or two tubs I've decided to turn into ez dial just for the experience.

and As long as I tape up and  and take tape off appropriately it really doesn't make too much difference to me.

This is one of my Cake War jars, they are tapered so the cake just pops right out. I was just concerned with the blobby part, since none of my other 10 jars have anything like it.

So I altered my tubs a bit to attach just a small paper towel strip with a paper clip on each side of my tubs to make a significantly smaller gap for FAE.

I'm thinking this looks improved now vs. the pics I posted a few hours ago? The lids are basically just a bit offset all the way around now

Still in the planning process but:

1 part verm
1 part hemp
1 part ryegrass seed


Wanted to keep the verm for its moisture holding capability.  The hemp and rgs is part of an aio recipe I'm planning as well. As far as hydration I might have to toy with the ratio, I may even hydrate the rgs separately.  Still planning the dry verm barrier to keep with the style.

Looks perfect now.

Another thing you can consider

I like to just take the blue gasket out it makes thevlid loose And allow for Good airflow kind of like a shoe box would.

I believe those gaskets are usually foam.. I just tear a little piece off and use that to make the gaps when and if needed
