The official PF TEK cultivation thread * 12
    #29462596 -

It's been a long time coming.

Here we go. we finally have an official PF Tek thread. You're One Stop Shop for everything PF. Including EF(EXOTIC PF)

Come here and  ask questions/answer questions and share pictures/grow logs and all general experience/expertise pertaining to the PF Tek.... please feel free to share links to your favorite PF Tek and I will link them here in the op.

Anything related to and on the lines of PF is welcome. including ideas for new recipes. As well as exotic cakes (EF-TEK)

The PF Tek is fundamental. It is a perfect starting point for every noob cultivator.

Me and countless others stand behind the tek.  Lots of us think it deserves its own thread.

So here we are.

If you're a noob and this is your first time reading this post there are links to the PF Tek below.

Updated PF Tek Guide (with Pictures)

EF-tek (Exotics Fanaticus cakes)

MacMerdin's Simple Pan-Cakes

Pristine BRF Puck tek

I'll start it off with some pics and

Heres a tip

use coir instead  verm for the roll.

I definitely have much easier time getting coir stick. no problem at all. And also does a better job at keeping the cake hydrated.

I also like to put like a mound of coir or verm on top and on bottom for them to sit on. (Faht uses an inner reservoir for optimal results)

It's really good for a bottom watering and keeping them hydrated. You can see the  in the pictures below.

Of course I got this idea from fahtster

For those that enjoy trading and giving away spores:

This is a friendly little plug for using PF cakes as spore-print MACHINES - holy schneike! From the first 6 cakes that I ran for the 2025 Cake Wars challenge, I’ve made way more than 200 spore prints of three different varieties for spore trading! That’s astonishingly easy and valuable, considering some vendors sell prints for $30 each. I personally enjoy giving them away and trading them.

Imagine what it would do for Shroomery’s Marketplace if several people were to use PF tek to easily grow a enough fruits for a sample trip and to make a bunch of spore prints to trade?

One can pretty easily amass a ***huge*** inventory of varieties *very* quickly that way, all for the cost of envelopes and postage.

Not sayin it’s for everyone, but it IS another way to squeeze a lot of additional personal enjoyment out of this wonderful hobby of ours!

Maybe something to think about! Peace to all!

Word, thank you for the encouragement! If I could ask one more question about the PF Tek. I read that, when I add water to the verm at the beginning, I should squeeze some in my fist and, if more than a few drops come out, I've added too much water. Should I be squeezing lightly or should I be squeezing hard? I can imagine that, with a given amount of moisture in the verm, a light squeeze would result in a few drops while a hard squeeze might result in a lot of water coming out.

Honestly that part of the tek is really confusing. You should just ignore it. Stick to the recipe as long as you you do that you'll be good.

(I wish they would just take that part out of the tek. It's an issue that comes up and is covered frequently with noobs)

Put the verm in the bowl add the water mix it up it should feel damp.

Tilt your bowl up like you're going to pour the mixture out and scoop all the verm up to the top of the bowl if you get any water dripping out to the bottom of the bowl then that's too much. You don't want to see any water on the bottom of the bowl collecting.

Then start adding your brown rice flour a little bit at a time and mix it all together. When that is done put some of it in your hand and squeeze it. When you open your hand you should be left with what looks like a little compact nugget of barley damp sand.

Before you squeeze it though. It will  almost likely appear to be too dry and fluffy.. that's okay. Thats perfect.  As long as when you give it that squeeze you see that it's now can pack together you'll see that the moisture content is there.

Typically if you go for what Field capacity is supposed to be. in that mixture. it's going to come out too wet and every time you PC or steam them you're going to have moisture issues.

So yeah just follow the recipe to a T. Your end result should be light and fluffy sand. That  packs together like a little egg in the palm of your hand.

Ps. For all other applications like preparing bulk substrate then you're going to want to be giving the Field capacity squeeze test and that means grabbing a handful and giving it a real hard squeeze. And you would only want a few drops to come out.

Good tips about the mound of verm or coir for the cakes to sit on. I kind of did this with one of my failed cakes from a failed water tub, gave up on this cake completely so we'll see how it turns out.

Right now I am just fruiting from jars because the species I have seems to have a mind of its own, but I may try this technique properly in the future.

Do you find that you get less top fruits when you put the mound on top of the cake? In some of the pictures I can see there wasn't shrooms there, but in the other pictures it's hard to tell if you put a mound on top or not.

Also, if you did put a mound on top just for the purposes of extra hydration, what is the benefit of that versus just spraying the top of the cake? Maybe some grow, maybe you get some aborts? But couldn't you possibly get more fruits if some survived the watering? (versus none growing in some of those top coir mound photos?). Or do the shrooms eventually make it through that top mound?

Heres where I got the info from.  Its a fahtster write up.  :hatsoff:

fahtster said:
I got the idea from PF himself off his old site.  He was the first vendor I ordered from.  It's the inner rez tek... I used it because I didn't dunk prior to first flush, I watered slowly over the course of few days... Actually, here is an explanation of what I did with the cakes... It's in my tek index over at 'topia but I should have it here also.

I wrote it a long time ago and I don't have time to reread it, so I'm just going to quote the entire thing so some of it may be a little outdated or some of you may not agree with it, but it worked for me...

Quote:
CAKE WATERING TIPS

The idea is a simple one... if you want more mushrooms, you need more water... if you add more water, you need more FAE . There is a certain point of water retention in a cake that is most beneficial to the cakes production of pins and the maturation of those pins into full fruit-bodies. I call it the "Arc of Excellence", others call it the "Point of Diminishing Returns".

Picture an Arc and at the pinnacle of this arc is a point... this point is where the retention of water is at it's most beneficial to pin formation/development and then the maturation of those pins, hopefully 100% of the pins formed or at least most of them while safely resisting contams or drying out. To the left of that point is less water and to the right is too much water. Going too much to the right can result in contamination due to the water content being too high and the cake cannot cycle all the water has available to it. This over-saturation can also lead to poor pin formation and/or pin abortion. Not enough water can also cause poor pin formation/maturation. adjustments on either side of the point are easy to make... simply add more water if the cake is too dry or allow the cake to dry out a bit if it's too wet.

The inner reservoir  is a great way to increase water distribution evenly throughout your cakes. even tho it's a small column (about the diameter of a nickel), it has no nutes and therefore is not completely colonized; only partially which keeps the reservoir intact and allows for absorption all along its length. This also acts as an extension of your top and bottom casing  layers providing water to all parts of the fruiting  surface. it's true that cakes have more surface area, but without proper water hydration, that extra area is unused. I highly recommend the inner reservoir  and that it's made when the cakes are made... this allows the cake to slightly colonize it which, again, keeps it intact and stops water from just draining out the other end and also allows the cake to absorb water from it thru the myc that thinly colonizes it.

It's quite easy to know when to add water to the cake if we follow the processes and environment that the cake is subject to. Adding water to the cake right after birth is the best way to achieve that "point". This is because the cake is sterile right after birth, which helps with the contamination risk. The cake also doesn't have to struggle and reserve water; resulting is a healthy, unstressed cake right from the get-go. This is why dunked cakes or cakes that water has been fractionally added typically do better than undunked cakes on their first flush.

If you Dunk  your cakes after birth, I would Dunk the cakes up 24 hours; do it in a fridge if possible... if doing it in the fridge isn’t possible, I’d change the water every 4-6 hours, especially if you’re dunking in a hot environment. Then apply a moist to wet casing  layer and leave be unwatered until about mid pinning.. of course doing your FAE's at least twice a day. I've done both, but lately I've chosen fractionally adding water after Birthing  over dunking . This is how I do that:

You can (highly recommended, def. during the summer months) pasteurize  your casing  material before application and boil the water you plan on using for the soaking of the casing  via bottle sprayer

1. I put down a piece of tin foil on the Perlite  and put a small pile of verm  on the foil and soak with water.

2. open the jars and poor off any uncolonized verm  air barrier... I don't scrape off the verm  that is attached to the cake... why? this is sterilized casing  material.. no reason to remove it if you're just going to put verm  on there anyhow (unless of course you are using a verm/coir  mixture or something similar). But regular verm  by itself works great.

3. then I birth the cake and hold it under water for about a minute with verm  barrier and all... this hydrates that verm  in the inner reservoir  and the air barrier.

4. I then apply a thick casing  layer, about that size is good (1.5 inches), to the top of the cake and soak it with water... to the point that there is water draining off the cake when it's tilted a little bit and place it on top of the pile of wet verm  on the foil. the cake will suck up this water in the next couple days... basically, this is a slow Dunk  but with lots of air available during the absorption.

5. Now you can do what I like to do and stack another cake on top of that one... this is a great space saver and utilizes the space you are already using. To stack the cakes, you need to put another piece of foil between them or water will get pulled down from the top cake via gravity; this will water log the bottom cake and dry out the top cake. You'll probably get a nice flush  from the bottom one but that cake will probably contam the next time around due to being water logged... putting a piece of foil between them stops this action of forcing the water down or at least slows it considerably. Now just repeat the steps for the top cake and put a small pile of soaked verm  on the foil and so on.

6. Now once you have your single verm  soaked cake, you give it a couple days to absorb that soaking... I come back on the third day of birth and soak the top casing  layer again to the point of pooling... This gets the cake about to the that "point" on the arc...

**note** -if you are doing the two cake "towers" only soak the top cakes top verm  casing  layer... the bottom cake just doesn't need a second soaking... it doesn't lose much water due to it being in close proximity of the Perlite  and being "capped" off by the top cake which allows for less evaporation. some of the water from the top cakes does find it's way to the bottom cake too, so that second soaking will most likely water log the cake.

7. Now I let the cakes go without another watering until mid fruiting  where the cakes need lots of water to extend their fruits. Watering here can replace the need for a Dunk  between flushes one and two.

There are is a large amount of factors that also play a role in when you should add water to the cake (which I do so by watering the center of the top casing  layer directly over where the inner reservoir  is located). The stages in which the growth of the myc. is in is a big one.. which is also entwined with when you birthed the cakes. If you birth the cake before Pinning  starts invitro , longer periods of evaporation need to be taken into consideration before the cake starts Pinning , which can be upwards of a week or more. But then entwined with that is the RH  of the air that you are exchanging when doing your FAE's. So lets say you are in a climate where in the winter the RH  is very low and the air is dry... when you do your FAE's in that climate, more evaporation is going to take place from your cakes and Perlite ; whereas, if you are doing your FAE's in a climate where the RH  is high (the summer months anywhere), then less evaporation after exchanging your new air is going to occur and that balance on that "point" will remain steady with little fluctuation so less water will need to be replaced. Even if you are in a low RH  environment, a small amount of water will need to be replaced as there is little growth in the way of pins which results in little need for the cake to tap into it's reserve within it's structure. Even during the Pinning  stage, small amounts of water are used in pin formation (more than before pin formation but not much). This can be seen in how dense the pins are.

Myc. is going to produce its pins at a point on the cake where four factors come together in the best ratio for optimal fruit development through spore dispersal: nutrients, air, water, and structure. This is why Pinning  on the edges are a preferred place for myc. in a overlayed casing  or normal casing  or on a cake, where the DEC  and myc. meet. (thanks Golly ). This is why you want to keep your DEC  nice and moist during the pinnig stage... this signals the cake that this is a good spot to grow a whole shit load of mushies.. and if the cake is nice and healthy and not struggling in any way, it'll put out a nice pinset and see all, if not most of those pins to maturation. But in order to see all those pins mature, another step should be taken.

This is where larger amounts of water can be added safely to the cakes' casing.. Right after pin maturity (right before the caps starts breaking away from the stem), the cake is getting ready to use A LOT of it's water reserve. This is because it is using this water to inflate and elongate the cells in it's fruitbodies... not to say that tissue gain in the fruits is completely stopped but certainly slowed as water inflates the mushrooms. This is (ime) why the growth of mushrooms happens so rapidly after pin maturation. So it's during mid fruiting  that water should or can be added to the casing  layer so that the cake can easily use this new water through absorption by gravity and inner reservoir . This will permit more of those mature pins to go on to mature sporulating fruit-bodies. This watering can also keep the water retained in the cake high in volume if it's replaced as the cake used it during pin maturation. once the cake is fully mature.. the cake will still be heavy and therefore all that is needed is a bleach  dip  and a new pasteurized casing  layer to be added and once again soaked (minus the third day of flush  soak, it's unneeded and possibly harmful to your cakes--- but should be taken into consideration by how hydrated your cakes are if it should be done or not) to bring the cake back to that "point". But a Dunk  is never a bad idea... just other ways to go at it. And some strains prefer dryer conditions than others so you really should play around with it... find your own way of doing things.. keep track of what you do and your results... And if you do decide to experiment, don't put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Examples from fahts gallery.

Head over to his gallery for many more.

.........................................

*As far as will the mushrooms ever make it through the mound on top. It just depends on if they feel like it or not. they definitely can.

*It's just the same as a top layer on a bulk substrate In a tub.

*There are mounds on all of those cakes you see in my pictures.

*However it is pretty common for PF cakes to grow out the sides just as much as the top.. it depends on the micro environment and where the mushrooms are best suited to grow.. faht goes over this in the write up above.

*The main difference between just misting your cakes on top and having the mound is the mound acts as a reservoir. Same as a bulk substrate.

*You'll mist  less because it holds the water and the cake draws from it from both ends as needed until there's none left.

Appreciate the quotes. I'm still trying to figure out that fine line between the perfect mycelium that looks like a cloud, and if 1 light mist is good or not. Sometimes I see very fine droplets on the sides of my gallon ziplocs that are folded over, but not so much water droplets on the mycelium clouds that are very clean, not too thick, and fresh. Still trying to figure out if 1 slight mist from high above is towards the right direction or if that 1 mist (very very fine) could be preventing some pins from forming, or if maybe 1 fine mist is always beneficial if it's been a good bit just in case.

It's a great method. I've been growing mushrooms for 19 years now, and my first crop was on PF Tek, which I still use today among other methods.

Over the years, I have noticed that this method is very forgiving. You don't have to worry too much about all the details. For several years, I soaked the cookies for 12-24 hours at room temperature and never had a problem with contamination (in relation to the above recommendation to change the water every few hours). In my experience, FAE twice a day is also quite sufficient. I often do it only once a day, and when I go away for the weekend, I don't do it for 3 days and the result is the same. Don't get me wrong, of course you need to know the recipe and listen to good tips from others. But just doo it and have fun, don't tense your buttocks too much

I believe that mushroom cultivation is not only a precise laboratory technique, but there are also more wu wey methods - during cultivation, you can also be in a relationship with the mushrooms, not their manager. Like a gardener with plants in a Japanese garden.

I agree.

I've never had any issues with just a typical 24 hour initial dunk after birth.

Faht is def a mad scientist and mushroom whisperer.

If you were to fall down his Rabbit Hole you should definitely be prepared for a lot of unorthodox, out of the box "extra"

Things that produce amazing results for him but definitely aren't necessary to do especially if you're not into complicating things.

This is why I enjoy to take some of what he's doing an apply it when I see it fit and beneficial.

I kind of see his write up there as something for the very experienced PF  grower who wants to try to optimize their results as much as possible with it.

I typically birth my cakes, dunk them for 24 hours and they go directly into a water tub on top of a little mound of coir.  And pack a small mound on top the cake.  FAE is given 24/7 via small gaps from the cracked lid. ( I live in a very humid and hot environment)

then I mist as needed. and harvest mushrooms LOL easy as "cake"

This has been a very helpful read through. I'm on my first grow ever and just put my first 5 bluey Vuitton cakes into the water tub yesterday after a 24 hour dunk. I let them consolidate for 8 days after the half pint jars were fully colonized

The cakes were rolled in dry verm (not coir) before being put into the water tub. I am leaving the tub lid just lightly cracked for FAE although I know there are many conflicting opinions on FAE.

I have a 12/12 light cycle going and gave the cakes a light mist from above the open tub around the 12 and 24 hour mark (not sure if this was overkill so early on). It is winter and dry so I was a little concerned about the cakes drying out but am also cognizant that maybe I should just leave it the fuck alone for a bit here now.

Slightly blurry pic of of the cakes from above the water tub:

Obviously there is no one size fits all but anything in particular you all think I should keep in mind over this next day or 2?

I have 7 GT cakes that will be ready to birth later this week so I'm trying to learn as much as I can from any mistakes I make this first go around.

Keep us updated please. Take pics throughout the way. Maybe take 1 cake out and put it in a small monotub shoebox watertub sized appropriate for just 1 cake, maybe 1 in just a ziploc bag too, for some other data points. Since you're at this stage this would be really great. Don't take out more than 2 cakes from that fogger setup tho, and adjust things around so that you don't change it up too much.

Sounds like you're on the right track. If your cakes went through a 24-hour dunk and haven't fruited yet..

they should be good and hydrated.. I wouldn't worry about misting.

Wait till the mycelium starts to colonize more of the cake and gets nice and fluffy.. then you can start giving some fine Mist as needed.

You'll be able to see whether it's got a bunch of small little droplets on it or not at that point.

And if it doesn't then you'll want to go ahead and give it some.

It's good practice. I also wait about a week after full colonization before taking the cakes out of the jars. :princepancakes:

FAE once/twice a day is simply good practice and maybe even a bit of a ritual to check that everything is okay  For my experience, verm is good for rolling. I do the same.

With misting it is often the case that you don't need to do it at all, although it is good to have a mister to use when needed: at the beginning, if any parts of the substrate are dry (in this case, the vermiculite is dry, so you can spray a little at the beginning), and when you see that there is no or very little condensation on the walls of the container or box (for me, this is a sign that there is poor condensation and you can help a little). Once a day is enough. And observe - if you see that there is already a lot of condensation on the walls, or that the cakes are simply moist enough, then spraying does not make much sense. And once it starts pinning, only spray the walls, not the cakes. :fungo:

It's actually the bottom of a vegetable crisper that I found in a drawer that I never use but it is serving well for my grow

Here are two pics from this morning. I think I see some initial pins on top coming through? Or at the very least some individual clumps of myc on top of the cakes that weren't visible when I checked ~18 hours ago. Also doesn't look like too much condensation in the tub. Think a little mist would be good at this stage?

Thanks so much to everyone for your feedback! I'm excited but also trying not to overthink it

@neuro - oof! those are some purdy cakes dude! A daily misting is most always good - I mist once in the morning and once before going to bed.

A recommendation for your consideration: it might be worthwhile to set each of your cakes onto/into peanut butter jar lids or wide-mouth mason jar plastic lids (resting the cake on "inside" surface of lid), as you can add supplemental water once they start fruiting and it will help your flush when it comes.

Like this:

Best of luck with your grow! Peace to you, friend!

oh - and for misting, if you don't have an ultrafine mist spray bottle, those are a good thing to purchase. About $6; the mist is gentle enough to not blow chunks of verm off your cakes. So if you have a "regular" old-style spray bottle, just try to mist indirectly/gently so you're not hitting it with too powerful a blast of water. Think gentle fog in a forest vs firehose.

I use these barber bottles instead of the common ones you see.

The barber bottles is the short one with black top.    And is ultra fine mist as well.

And my experience they seem to be made better.. Meaning the pump mechanism doesn't fail and break on you As quick.

I've had some of those bottles only last like a week before they break. But these little Barber bottles have already lasted more than a month without any issues.

@neuro - I don’t start pushing water by putting water in the lid until they start showing some shrinking… You’ll know it when you see it, the top surface or sides will start to shrink in a bit become a little bit concave… Until that point, I just missed once in the morning and then once in the evening.  when the fruits are actively growing, the mycelium move a lot of water into the fruit over a short period and that’s the sweet spot for giving it more water.… So like, three days after pinning.

Birthed & dunked 7 more cakes yesterday morning, rolled them this morning and started a new water tub. Used the plastic mason jar tops this time so that I can bottom water them in the future if necessary.

Also about 5 days in on my smaller tub with 5 cakes. Still seeing more myc growth but no pinning yet. I'm giving a light morning and evening mist and am keeping the top cracked open. Trying my best to be patient and temper expectations because I know it can take a while for pinning to start. But since this is my first attempt ever I go back and forth between being very confident and thinking it isn't going to work

I feel ya on this - seems to me the cruelest aspect of PF tek is that most of the waiting is on the front end of the process, before birthing the cakes. I have read that bluey viton is a very slow grower - I haven't yet grown that one.

I think your GT cakes will move along to harvest fairly quickly - for my recent Ecuador cake in the cake wars grow thread, it took 42 days from inoculation, from spores to harvest.

Good luck with the rest of your grow! Peace to you, friend!

I inoculated all 12 jars on New Year's Day so the BV actually colonized more quickly.

I have let some of the GT consolidate for a bit longer than a week so the 2 or 3 slower colonizers could catch up.

Fingers crossed from here. I'm a bit worried my humidity is low but doing my best to keep things humid without too much dicking around in the tub. I keep telling myself that they want to live and I'm overthinking it! Just need to be patient and give it time

Yes please keep us updated. The waiting part really sucks. I think I didn't consolidate long enough when I originally tried my water tub, but also my chamber was very big. Waiting for pins is the worst and most boring part about mushrooms. Hopefully with more experience I can do everything possible to shorten this time.

Right now I am just trying to fruit from jars trying to figure out surface conditions and humidity, GE and FAE, before trying any more water tub setups. I figure it should give me some cushion by keeping the cakes in the jars. If things go well I may stick with keeping things in jars because so far it has been so much less of a hassle and more tidy.

I'm trying to stick with "on the dry side rather than too wet" but the delitray that made my biggest shroom was pretty wet and shitty, so I don't know if it wasn't as wet would I have gotten more? Or was it because it was that wet that I was able to get a shroom (and because it was so shitty, I only got 1 instead of more). More time needed to tell unfortunately.

What you all think about additives to the standard BRF mixture? I read that people add coffee grounds. I used to add blended straw myself, but that was years ago and I don't really remember if there was much difference.

Also once, while preparing the PFTek I noticed that I had almost no rice left, but I did have dried peas, so I ground them into flour and made GreenPeasFluor Mix, and I must admit that the result was very good, comparable to rice.

The only thing that was unpleasant about the peas was the smell—when mixing and pasteurizing them

Still no pinning on my 5 BV cakes that I birthed 9 days ago. It's dry here and I think I may have been cracking my tub too much. So I've reverted to just misting once in the morning and closing the lid. However, I'm not latching the lid so I think they are still getting some FAE and the tub seems to be staying much more humid this way.

Here are my cakes this morning:

Anything you all think I should be doing differently? Or do I just need to stay the course and be patient?

My 7 GT cakes are on day 3 in the water tub and I am trying to take a similar course of action with them but didn't take a pic this morning. They're still mostly covered in verm but starting to see some myc poking through

Thanks Agar. Since my tubs look plenty humid I am thinking of just leaving then along (no opening the lid to peek or more misting) for like 2 or 3 days, or at least until they don't look so humid inside anymore. Think that's a reasonable approach?

So 2 out of my 11 jars are pinning like crazy right now, they are the only 2 that are 100% colonized.

I wanted to do like 6 jars in one FC and 5 in another, is it ok to hold these jars until I have a few others jars fully colonized?

What happens to the little pins during the birth and dunk?

One other question while I'm here. Water tub vs SGFC. for the water tub is coir totally necessary or can I dunk and roll in verm and that should be fine? I don't have any coir, I have lots of verm.

I've had pins go both ways after the birth and dunk. Sometimes they start growing right after the dunk, sometimes they abort and new ones eventually take they're place. Either way it's no biggie..Sometimes they become a snack before the dunk :hehehe::mushroom2:

You can roll in verm instead of coir, that's totally fine.

@jeffreykite - lookin good dude! If they’re pinning in the jar, it’s time to let ‘em outta there and get them into a fruiting chamber. I haven’t encountered that situation myself, so some others will hopefully chime in about what’s best to do.

Oh man, just go with the water tub - to me, there is nothing about a SGFC that makes it any better & its certainly a pain in the butt to construct, messy, etc.

The water tub will do just fine. I use a baking cooling rack in my water tub to support the cakes & I put my cakes onto/into upturned wide-mouth plastic mason jar lids, because they’re handy when adding supplemental water later in fruiting. Lots of others just place their cakes onto the metal lid centers - that works great too.

Looking good! Best of luck with your grow!

Try to print some of the caps, if you get a chance, to have prints to trade! Printing is very simple to do and trading prints is lots of fun, and a great way to get new varieties!

Hope this is helpful. Peace to you, friend!

My advice,  similar to the others. Either pluck those pins and eat them:lol:

Or leave them on for the Dunk/roll. Sometimes they fall off sometimes they survive and they start growing like crazy after the dunk and sometimes they don't.

The takeaway here is... it doesn't really matter. Whatever you want.

Still nothing going on here either. I have 1 of my jars in a water tub setup to see if anything happens sooner than in my ziplocs.

Looks like you might be overmisting your cakes. You want your cakes moist not soggy. Also, your lid may have too much air-sealing going on. I have that same tub as a SAB and the lid seal is meant to be airtight. Id recommend propping up the lid to increase FAE with a small object like a LEGO or pen or something small and cylindrical that can fit between the lid and the top of the tub.

Heres my new favorite mini-tub. Got it at Home Depot for $2.50! What a deal. Love that Home Depotz. :yesnod:

Thank you friend. That was the first mist I gave them in 3 days and I took that pic immediately after a generous mist but point taken all the same. Last night I also did fold up a paper towel and use it to keep the lid open a bit so that they get more FAE.

Will check on my cakes later this evening. Fingers crossed!

What ratio are your cakes with verm, and how fine is the verm you are rolling in? If the verm roll is fine cut, are you also using fine cut verm when you make your BRF cakes?

Your cakes look much more smooth, maybe this is the strain though. My cakes looked more like Neuroshaman's cakes when I rolled in verm, and I'm wondering if that made things more difficult for me, or if my Pans didn't like verm as a casing layer and I should have used other recommended options (I want verm to work ideally though). Maybe fine or chunky verm doesn't make a difference because I know when I did my cakes I messed up in several ways.

I just thought I would ask because I see some people mention grinding up their verm into smaller pieces and didnt know how important this actually is.

I would definitely give them some more fae. That lid has the blue gasket on it so if you don't have any holes poked in it anywhere the its pretty sealed off. Dont choke them.

if you don't feel like modifying it maybe flip the lid or use somthing to prop it up a little and make some gaps.

I have similar advice — give them some air.

It's best to heat a nail (held with pliers) over a burner and, with the lid open, make 2-3 horizontal rows of holes on both sides, each hole about 1-2 cm apart.

You don't even have to take the cakes out, just remember to keep the lid open when burning - it's better for the smoke to escape upwards than to suffocate the mushrooms inside.

How long were the cakes in the jars and why did you decide to birth them?

I offset the lid with a slightly rolled up paper towel so they are getting more FAE now.

For all of the cakes, I waited at least 8 days from colonization (i.e. a completely white jar) for consolidation before birthing. Some as long as 10 days. There was no pinning in any of the jars when I birthed them but I was following the latest PF tek that simply said wait at least a week for consolidation.

All cakes were dunked for 24 hours before I rolled them in verm.

The larger tub with the 7 GT cakes has only been going for a week and I am definitely seeing growth although no pins yet.

The smaller tub with 5 bluey Vuitton cakes has been going 12 days. I saw rapid growth of mycelium/seemingly hyphal knots in the first week but not a lot since then.

I wait for pins before birthing the cakes and usually have fruits in a couple of days. You’re in a wait and see situation now so don’t be making a lot of changes trying to help things along.

I think I'll try that approach next time. I was trying to follow the latest PF Tek to a T on my first go around and that just says wait at least 7 days after colonization before birthing. I didn't want to go too much longer but I know now that it really wouldn't have hurt anything to wait longer.

In your experience, how long after your jar initially looks colonized (completely white with myc) does it take for pins to start forming in the jar?

And yep - to your last point now I am just going to leave my tubs as is and give my cakes ~1 mist a day assuming they don't otherwise look overly dry or wet.

Looks like Your cake shrunk in the jar, creating space between the cake and the jar wall, and the mycelium colonizes this space.

Yes  The cake started shrinking quickly because it's loosely packed inside. But the mycelium will eat everything and shrink the whole cake more. Then wait another 5 days after full colonization and you're good to go

I've never birthed anything that wasnt wide mouth.. It is said that it can give you lots of trouble. But I have seen others do it and it turn out okay. I think maybe it's just the hand you're dealt.

If you pop over to the cake wars 2025 there's a few people over there that did it..

In the future stick with half pint Wide Mouth Jars and you won't ever have to worry about running into birthing issues.

Sorry I just realized you were asking a different question.

No do not birth  that yet.  that needs to fully colonize all the way around and through.

Perfect that's the right idea. However those gaps might be a little big and cause you to dry out. You'll have to play with it a bit to dial in.

I would use something a little smaller than those paper towels.  maybe some sticky tack or a small folded over a piece of tape or paper or something.

Just to give you Like A quarter to a half inch Gap maybe.  And do it on the adjacent side as well so you have some air flow in more than just that one corner.

Also just for future reference holes can always be covered with tape and then they're non-existent.

I typically grow everything un modified because my environment allows me to. but I do have one or two tubs I've decided to turn into ez dial just for the experience.

and As long as I tape up and  and take tape off appropriately it really doesn't make too much difference to me.

One of my jars has this blobby growth at the top. Do any of you experts know what this is?

Looks like Your cake shrunk in the jar, creating space between the cake and the jar wall, and the mycelium colonizes this space.

Yes, it has shrunk, but still not fully to the bottom. So do you think it will be fine to birth?

I've never birthed anything that wasnt wide mouth.. It is said that it can give you lots of trouble. But I have seen others do it and it turn out okay. I think maybe it's just the hand you're dealt.

If you pop over to the cake wars 2025 there's a few people over there that did it..

In the future stick with half pint Wide Mouth Jars and you won't ever have to worry about running into birthing issues.

Sorry I just realized you were asking a different question.

No do not birth  that yet.  that needs to fully colonize all the way around and through.

This is one of my Cake War jars, they are tapered so the cake just pops right out. I was just concerned with the blobby part, since none of my other 10 jars have anything like it.

So I altered my tubs a bit to attach just a small paper towel strip with a paper clip on each side of my tubs to make a significantly smaller gap for FAE.

I'm thinking this looks improved now vs. the pics I posted a few hours ago? The lids are basically just a bit offset all the way around now

Still in the planning process but:

1 part verm
1 part hemp
1 part ryegrass seed

Wanted to keep the verm for its moisture holding capability.  The hemp and rgs is part of an aio recipe I'm planning as well. As far as hydration I might have to toy with the ratio, I may even hydrate the rgs separately.  Still planning the dry verm barrier to keep with the style.

Looks perfect now.

Another thing you can consider

I like to just take the blue gasket out it makes thevlid loose And allow for Good airflow kind of like a shoe box would.

I believe those gaskets are usually foam.. I just tear a little piece off and use that to make the gaps when and if needed

Good call on removing the gaskets. Just went ahead and did that. I really feel like my cakes are looking pretty good. When I open the lids things seem humid and smell nice and mushroomy. They just don't seem to want to pop. Here's the latest from this morning. Plenty of knotted up fluffy looking mycelium but no pinning yet.

I will keep everyone posted. We're all in this together at this point

Unfortunately still no pins on my cakes...at this point the tub with 5 cakes has been going for 16 days and the tub with 7 cakes has been going for 9.

Everything still smells nice and mushroomy, no contam to speak of, but  I'm feeling like something is wrong at this point. Is there any chance that they're just slow growers and might start pinning as late as the 3 week mark? Trying to diagnose if I did anything wrong but I really am not sure. I'm doing my best to stay patient but I can feel myself starting to to lose hope a bit.

Well that's good to hear at least! These are my 7 GT cakes and have only been in the tub for 9 days so I have more hope for them.

As for the other 5 cakes on the green tray - those are bluey Vuitton and have been in there for 16 days now. They had rapid myc growth at first but have seemingly stalled out.

*Edit* Wow I just looked at the pic again and see the pin right on top clear as day now. I guess I was looking at those outcroppings of myc on the side and missed the clear as day pin. We have life!

Still not sure what is going on with the bluey Vuitton cakes but I just checked am seeing more tiny pins on the GT cakes. Woohoo!

Yup I will fully own that I'm a dumbass for this one. I've had a couple insane days at work so I think I just glanced at the tubs and thought they weren't growing instead of noticing the pins that are a bit camouflaged by the verm  I'm seeing even more now and also see what you mean about that one in the lid...that is very interesting. It almost looks like it isn't even connected to the cake itself somehow?! Maybe it's attached but just on the very edge.

Makes me wonder more about the BV cakes because I used the EXACT same process for those but still am not seeing any pins at 16 days. But knowing now that my methodology isn't completely flawed I guess I have a bit more hope that those are just slow growers.

And yeah...patience is tough. My whole intent for getting back into psychs after a decade away is self betterment so I guess this learning process is step #1

And you are on the lucky side. You wouldn't believe how many people proudly upload a pic of their firstish tub and totally overlooked that rapidly expanding spot of mold in the corner.

Appreciate it everyone. I guess my question now is do I keep misting the cakes when things look dry even though I now have some pins popping through? I've read a lot of conflicting info here but it makes sense to me to still provide light misting as long as it's indirect.

And any thoughts on what to do with my 5 BV cakes? Like half of the 7 GT cakes are now pinning at only 9 days in the tub but the BV cakes are 16 days in with no pins.

@Scemilope those look awesome! I'm jealous - hoping for a fraction of that success on my end!

Well boys I have myself a fine harvest

I was looking at my small water tub and noticed there was a little mushroom growing through the bottom of my little green mesh vegetable crisper tray. When I tried to pick up my cake the pin fell right off and stayed stuck on the tray. A whopping 3.09 grams wet

As ridiculous as it is I figured I might as well throw it in my dehydrator to make sure it works and can use it as a test. Also I'm assuming this would be safe to eat even though it didn't grow to maturity?

This LC was supposedly bluey Vuitton. I feel like it looks like APE?

Since it was growing in the bottom into the water (away from the light) I am thinking things must not be humid enough in there. So I will take that into account. I have also since put lids under those cakes so I don't have any more growing down in the direction of the water. I wish I took a picture before I (accidentally) picked it

A bit of a mutant here? Not exactly sure what is going on there lol.

Seems like a bit of fuzzy feet going on but not out of control. A bit more FAE I guess?

Also, besides the one pin growing down towards the water that I mentioned above nothing doing in my other tub that has been going almost 3 weeks. These were supposedly Bluey Vuitton but based on the on little guy that grew it looks more like APE. The vendor that I got these from also has APE LC so I wonder if things got mixed up. I have heard these are slow growers, but at what point do I try dunking again?

Were those cakes still able to put out many more fruits or if they get that big is it just limited mostly to a couple of those?

Very nice looking cubes for sure, I like the look of those.

that's the only way I can get down "raw" fruits.

@Tulted.  The species,  as you asked.. would be
Ps. cubensis. The variety would be as listed Tasmanian, and huatula.

Also as  stated. cubes are cubes and for the most part they all look generally the same.

You will see some differences here and there between varieties but for the most part they  got the same general appearance.

As for the water and big fruit question.

It's likely the genetics he used were really good and the cake had enough nutrients and  water to grow nice and big like that.

So typically in like a tub. yes,

when the mushrooms grow nice and big like that they probably used up a lot of the nutrients and water and what's left will give you results that aren't necessarily as big..

However as for the PF cakes water isn't usually an issue because you redunk them or bottom water it..

so you can always count that the water content will be there as long as you pay attention and make sure of it.

From that point it just depends on how much nutrients those big mushrooms took out of the cake when they grew..

If there is still a lot of nutes/water left then you could still get more big ones.. but if not,  then not likely.

The structural Integrity of the cake itself will usually start to get spoungee and crumble apart..

you'll know at this point that there's really not a lot left there and you should expect for your flushes to start dwindling.

If fruiting conditions weren't introduced fast enough could the vegetative mycelium just keep eating nutrients and make a cake spongey? Or does mycelium store the nutrients to fruit in the mycelial network ahead of time, and no real risk to fruit yield if you happened to let cakes over-consolidate by a few weeks?

No fruiting doesn't have to be initiated at a perfect time, you can even let the cakes stay in the jars until they get pins then birth them. I've had jars I've left for just a few days after full colonisation and some which are weeks after full colonisation and they act the same as long as you dunk them before setting them in the FC.

The pf tek is very simple and doesn't need a perfect timing, just wait for full colonisation and consolidation then you can fruit or wait quite a while.

If the cake is spongey it's more likely to be contaminated than stripped from nutrients.

OK ty. I have jars that have consolidated for weeks past the expected timeframe, and I'm thinking that this species absolutely needs some sort of soil casing layer for some type of exotic pans. I am following the exotic pans thread and from how I saw my big shroom grow I think this looks promising. On the shroom I grew the mycelium reached out to some dirt that was clumped almost on the side of the deli container. It somehow formed a base at this point where it started to form almost indestructable mycelium and make a pin at this spot. The strength of this base and the strength of the stem of the pin was crazy. It just needed a little bit of nutes at this location where it was able to form a relay or assembly line from nutes in the tray. The veins of the mycelium looked like ant tunnels branching through the substrate to the base. I have waited for pins in jars and they just never happen. It is very odd. And verm as just a casing layer does not seem to work either for me. It will vegetate through verm but it will not form any bases or pins.

Well folks, my first flush yielded about 12gs cracker dry! Obviously not a massive success but I'm pretty psyched either way as this was my very first attempt at growing after much research.

Don't have super high hopes for a big second flush because my initial cakes were already a bit sparse but you never know. I've dunked them and they're headed back into the water tub so we shall see.

I had some initial issues getting the right BRF consistency and I think I may have thrown off the verm:BRF:water ratio a bit due to overly coarse verm and that may not have given my cakes enough "food" to do their thing. I think the cake that had the biggest flush was ~28gs when I picked them wet but most were significantly less.

I bought some medium verm from a mushroom supply company for my next go around which should work much better. I'm planning to inoculate 10 more jars in the next week or so to get attempt #2 in the works.

At the end of the day I'm pretty happy. There was definitely a point where I thought nothing was going to happen in my water tub!

Wish me luck on round 2 :mushroom2:

12g dry from your first grow - that’s fuckin huge dude! nice work! And now, an unlimited lifetime supply of mushrooms awaits you.

Congrats, neuroshaman!

Dose carefully: start low, go slow.

If you need new spores for a different, hit me up - happy to share Creation’s bounty of free spores with you. Did you happen to make any spore prints? If so, I’d love to trade prints with ya!

Peace to you, friend! Congratulations!

Thanks buddy! And maybe more to come on the second flush. Only time will tell.

I have a ton of life events coming up in the next few months so just planning on solid storage (truly cracker dry with a desiccant pack in a vacuum sealed mason jar) and having them ready for me once I'm mentally ready in a few months. So just essentially trying to stock pile until then

No spore prints yet but maybe on this next grow. This time around, I was just mostly focused on getting my fruits directly into the dehydrator. I appreciate the offer - I might hit you up in the future for that!

I now have a little over 25gs dried from those 12 cakes I was so worried about earlier on this thread  And more on the way from some cakes on their small third (or fourth?) flush.

Currently sterilizing 8 more BRF jars and will knock them up tomorrow to get going on a new project and hopefully refine my methods. At this point a lot of the stress is gone that I had with my first attempt. Certainly not an amazing yield or anything but I was fully expecting to spectacularly fail on my very first attempt so I am pretty happy with roughly an oz dried!

This is why I love pf tek  so much. Even when you think there's no wayin hell I'm going to pull this off..

your chances are actually really good with the tek.

And as you said. after one or two runs.

all the stress and micromanaging goes away and you get to start having fun with it.

Next thing you know you'll be on a roll and you'll be producing pf cakes like a pro.

reviving this thread, cuz it needs to stay alive!

There is still time to join the competition in Cake Wars II - just gotta commit and inoculate by May 1. Winners will be announced on July 1. Fabulous prizes to be distributed!

I guess I’m back in the game of growing after a month or so break, am now growing some PF cakes as a non-competitive grow-along with Cake Wars II.

Fifteen 1/2 pint wide-mouth PF cakes with 15 different varieties! Hoping to get **hundreds** of good spore prints for giveaways & trading.

Last time I did cakes, during the first Cake Wars, I was easily able to print most of the caps 5 or 6 times successively at 12-hrs for each set of prints. Only stopped printing ‘em because I finally decided enough was enough…still have tons of prints of those varieties available for giveaways.

This time, I inoculated using disposable 3mL plastic droppers & to do it that way, I opened each jar’s lid in front of my flow hood and dripped the spore solution around the edges and top of the cake. I did not use a dry layer on top, as I have mocropore tape over the holes in the lids. After inoculation, I placed plastic wrap - held in place with a rubber band - over the top of the lid & rings, and the  poked a single hole in the plastic with a toothpick. This allows gas exchange with minimal risk of drying out - has worked pretty well for me in the past.

My solutions were all old: all but 2 were solutions I had made nearly 2 years ago and have kept them in centrifuge tubes (30mL and 70mL) the refrigerator. The other two were syringes, but I didn't want to use needles, so I squirted the solutions into clean centrifuge tubes and then droppered the solutions onto the cakes in the same way as for the other cakes.  I expect to lose a few to contamination - def won’t hurt my feelings if I do.

My cakes were made using coarse vermiculite, home-ground brown rice flour (using a magic bullet blender) and water.

Anyway, inoculated today - will document the grows here and some over in Cake Wars II.

Good to hear from you FB! Thanks for reviving this thread. I'm giving a second go around with GT LC I purchased from the same vendor as the first time. They had a half off deal so I figured why not...

Literally everything I have done (including my water tub, etc.) is identical but everything seems to be stalled out. I am 3 and a half weeks post-birth at this point and have a few small pins but even they seem to be stalled. Here are some pics from right after I misted this morning.

While the cakes were colonizing, they did have a day where I was gone and the temp in my house dropped to 58F. But that was just a day and besides that they've been in the 72-76F range. Could that have somehow messed with them? I would think not but that truly is the only thing I've done differently this time around.

I am definitely a little frustrated after thinking I had the basics figured out  Was fully planning on another successful PF grow where I would take some spore prints and then move on to agar work in the near future.

I'm going to probably dunk these cakes again in the next few days if I don't see any promising growth but I am definitely scratching my head and don't have a ton of hope for these. Just truly not sure what went wrong

Hey neuroshaman! Good to see ya, friend!

You didn’t ask me, I wouldn’t recommend doing anything at all with those cakes right now - I think they’ll come around.  Maybe just keep ‘em humid with occasional misting.

IME, stalling is often due to temps that are a bit low, othertimes due to infection with something. When it’s an infection, individual grows can stall, but rarely simultaneously affects many individual grows equally, so I doubt that is what is likely going on. PF tek is just slow - or feels like it!

On my cake wars (I) grows, I tracked the time required and found that PF cakes seem to kind of front-load the boring waiting part of a grow, while the cakes consolidate, but tracked pretty OK with shoebox timelines…a bit longer in general.

Peace to you, friend!

Hoping to find an answer here. Doing pf tek in 7qt unmodded tubs. Struggling with understanding how to go about fruiting them. With the unmodded tubs, can I get away with not putting holes in the bottom, with perlite? I have seen a few things, sgfc with perlite, some with verm (which was my original plan til I got told that was wrong and to do water tub instead) then, the water tub is completely new to me, only having learned about it the other day. I would love to be able to have something ideally I can set and forget, or at most only have to mist a few times a day. Could someone walk me through how to set up a shoebox size tub for fruiting?

I can try. If you’re going to use 6qt or 7qt shoeboxes, your cakes are going to be pretty cramped for space, but if you only put one in each shoebox and put another shoebox over the top (“dubtub” style), it ought to work fine in my opinion. How long you can leave them alone will be something you’ll have to figure out by trial and error.

With your intended 6-or-7 qt dubtubs, put about an inch of tap water in the bottom of one tub.  You now need to find a way to set your cakes into the shoebox so that they are not in direct contact with the water.  I set my cakes into upturned plastic lids on a rack above the water.  You could try to put widemouth jar rings down as a pedestal on wich to place your cakes in lids. However you do it, set your vermiculite or coir covered cakes into the bottom of the tub in a way that the cakes themselves are not in direct contact with the water. Then put the dubtub top in place and let them set….that’s kinda all there is.

A larger water tub might be way easier because you can use a cooling rack…same principle…put a layer of water in the bottom, your cakes elevated out of the water, a lid on top.

Definitely recommend reading Mateja’s Water Tub tek, and also what he’s written about keeping good surface conditions.

Best of luck, and peace to you, friend!

Thanks so, I guess this needs a bit more detail.

After posting tubs with only 2 cakes per tub, was told to combine to 3 or 4. But, really didnt like how cramped they were and did go back to 2 per. Read through the water tub tek. Do they mean to let the cakes sit undisturbed for 48hrs?
I wasnt sure about that so have misted a few times to maintain surface conditions and condensation on the walls as they have not been maintaining unless misted. RH is 80% and temp is 72f.

Which is kinda why I want to switch to perlite. But that brings up another question. Does perlite not need to drain? Or with an unmodded tub would flipping or cracking the lid help with FAE and the potential for standing water?

I want these cakes to do well and what I thought I knew about fruiting PF was wrong so just want to make sure I am doing things right. Water tubs look fine but not every tek is going to work for everyone. Maybe the room is too hot but its at an ideal temp and humidity so I don't get it.

Re: The official PF TEK cultivation thread [Re: EgoDeathDoll]
    #29592421 -

Myself, I have never tried cakes in shoebox sized grow containers. I have used water tubs and shotgun fruiting chambers with perlite. My advice is to forget about perlite and just go with the water tub approach .

In my opinion, whatever the fruiting container, it all comes down to humidity control. Having a layer of water in the bottom of the container provides a large surface area for evaporation to take place, which in the confines of a nearly closed container, should bring the humidity level to near 99%, but only if you leave it alone and don’t open the lid frequently.

You don’t need to worry much about FAE with any 6Lor 7L shoebox, even with the lids latched….they are leaky/not airtight.

For grow temps, the conventional advice is to stick to room temperature in your grow area.

What you ultimately want to develop is fresh mycelial growth on the surface of the cakes, which, if the humidity is right, will develop a layer of very tiny water droplets on the surface of the mycelium. This is what is termed “surface conditions”.  Maintain good surface conditions and you’ll get fruits.

Don’t get too stuck - give it your best shot and make careful observations as to what’s going on, and adjust as best you can. I wish I was better able to help you.  Hopefully others will also chime in.

The 16 qt. "bootboxes" have been working for me for PF tek cake water tubs. They're a few inches taller than shoeboxes, and large enough to fit 4 or so cakes. Depending on your climate you may need to unsnap the lid or even drill holes, but the size suits cakes well.

Shoeboxes can work well for jam jar cakes, 1/4 - 1/2 as tall as normal PF cakes. Obviously those won't yield much, but they're good for making prints.

I've made some Coir PF tek cakes because I had some spare room in the presto and a bunch of 350ish ml pp5 containers that I never used.

I do have some LC going, although I need to test it. Meanwhile, I do have quite a few spore prints that I would like to try out, although part of me realizes I might as well just swab it on agar, then make a blenderless LI.

How many of you still use PF Tek with spore syringes? Seems like a good way to get varied genepool from the get go, but I don't want to fuck around too much with contam prone methods.

I pretty much only use mss.

Its def a double edged sword.  But how clean  and or  where you source your spores makes a big difference.

So far the the first two cake wars were mss I belive.  So there's that.

Now that's not to say I haven't used other mediums but I've definitely done it off and I just stick to the original method anytime I go back to PF for Nostalgia reasons and what you said getting very genetics and stuff is pretty cool.

Ice had a cake pop up reverts albinos and just regular looking cubes all in one go.

I see if i can find a pic to post.

^ Alrighty, you got me! I'll do some MS (and take a swab as well just in case).

I have some prints I never used from an Enigma like Husky mutant that would sometimes still output regular sporing fruits.

I think the one I have would be from these. The coloring is paler and browner than usual.

I'll see how I feel about cake wars, I don't even get vermiculite anymore nor standard half pints.

I really liked just using pure coir cakes. Got best results for cakes, although it had been a while. These were APE on Oatmeal Flour (grinded oatmeal because of fucking pantry moths). Gotta say, mycelium seemed to gobble that up.

There was some insane stuff I did, I ended up cloning what I thought was a plin from my swab plate, but it was instead a popcorn like blob. This PE x Ghost cross ended up being a fail because it kept outputting stuff like this.

But they did look amazing while growing.
