Were we reading the same book?? I can distinctly remember at least two places in which the book insinuated that any 'non-believers' should be killed. Certainly this is what we have seen in action around the world. Self defence does not count in pre-meditated acts, I think that is pretty clear to all.

I think just about anyone, with a book to tell them to do so or not, would kill someone who was trying to kill them in self defence, in the heat of the moment.

But laying in wait to kill someone who doesn't believe what you do is just wrong on so many levels.

I did not make an excuse for that behaviour. I certainly do not think it is alright. I was only talking about the fact that Islam is a huge issue particularly for people who actually think what the west is doing is just dandy. They have a tendency to point the finger more at the middle east and characterize their behaviour as worse than the wests. I did not make that clear.

I just think that every country has a responsibility to look at the way they are living first rather than pointing the finger at how other people are living. You can't do anything about those countries short of a terrible war which will only make the situation worse. If we can do something about the selfish greedy way the west is living then maybe we could actually be an example for other countries to follow rather than something that people envy and fear for the riches and power that are there.

This thread is about Islam, not the west.  Bringing up the west is an irrelevant diversion, an excuse.  The same holds for criticisms of the west and Christianity.  Those criticisms, which do exist, stand on their own right and are not excused by the garbage of Islam.  Lets stop passing the buck and hold people accountable for their own actions.

I appreciate what both you guys are saying but I still think Grapefruits post is entirely relevant. An offshoot of the discussion certainly seems to centre around the way people excuse Islam by comparing it.

This is the thing that bugs me about organised religion I guess - there always seems to be an excuse for it.

Not that the rest of the world would not do the same if they could these days but that idea that life was all about control of resources and buying and making things you don't need came mostly out of the American value system.

Seems to me that Capitalism is slowly but surely reducing global poverty. Peak Oil is a lie, global warming is a lie, open borders is a lie, the only westerners that are fucking the world up are the control freak left. I wonder how many of them have to be raped or stabbed before the idiocy ends? Loafers, workers and business people are not fucking the world up. Ideologues are, the left are giving power to Islam with their control slogans. An Arab can move west, be protected by anti racism laws and get away with rape, pedophilia, murder or just stomp all over the locals who get no protection at all. Locals are automatically racist haters under left imposed ideological laws. Diversity and multiculturalism is oppression of the innocent.

The strange part is that the elite capitalists pretty much fund left ideologies and fire the decent people as per the demands of social media mobs.

You're right that a lot of decent people essentially get crucified in the name of political correctness -- and never forgiven -- but when you say the elite capitalists fund the left, please understand that the elite capitalists fund everybody.

I agree.  The driving force behind the drastic drop in global poverty over the past 40 years has been the adoption of market economics by ostensibly communist nations in asia.

That's complete rubbish regarding my country at least. The left wing party here has next to no funding from the rich. The only way that they can get funding is through the unions, which is a real shame in my view because the unions are very reactionary.

The increase of technology is reducing poverty for some but IMO there is absolutely no evidence for the common idea that free market capitalism is supporting tech advancements or the production of goods that aren't frivolous. Actually I think it is hindrance because we have become so obsessed with spending money on things that are merely pleasure toys, plush stuff.

Also there is the question of whether poverty is really the only issue. In rich countries (particularly America) and increasingly in developing countries like China community values such as providing care for one another and having a connection to your fellow man are being wiped off the map. The mental health trend looks very bad especially those trends toward isolation, paranoia and narcissism.

Whenever I see TV shows about the grinding poverty they are experiencing in Africa I can't help but notice the life that is present in those people and their communities. I see very little of that here. It also seems strange they are experiencing such grinding poverty when they are often resource rich countries.

Not so much left wing political parties, big business, media and education funds and enforce left ideologies.

I don't want to go on stressing that human potential is being wasted as it is not something that I can have any influence over. Swedish potential has certainly been squandered on left extremism. Bill Gates funding African circumcision programs, G.E. funding ridiculous social engineering programs and government global warming $lu$h. Faith in capitalist space ventures? A mustard seed is perhaps enough.

The middle east is wealthy... Considering Islam, perhaps gratitude for the chaos? I'm not so keen on an organized united states of Islam.

Erm. Capitalism is leading us into slavery mate. So yes global poverty is being reduced, guess what else is ? The technology gap between the leaders and the lead. As well as that, so is the wealth..We are willingly walking a path to an eventual complete loss of freedom.

I didn't approach it with any bias whatsoever. I read it before ISIS and all that lark was in the spotlight, many years ago. It was given to me by a friend who is devout, and is an extremely good human being.

When he first gave me the book, like I do with new books, I opened it at a random page. Read a little, saw something about killing non-believers. Ok I thought, mildly shocked at that point. Mildly.

I then opened it at another random page and began reading. Lo and behold, after reading a few lines, something more about killing non-believers. My level of surprise had increased by this point. Still, it's an old book, and the only Muslim I know was the one who had given it to me who is, like I say, a very good person.

Now, I've never run around saying what you suggest, so I contend that it is you that is in fact biased by suspecting my reaction to fit into the box you expect it to fit into.

I brought up a conflict between what you stated and what I found in my reading, which you have failed to address. Would you care to address it properly this time round?

To tell you the truth what you are talking about does not exist. On no account whatsoever does the Quran advocate violence the way you describe it. It is clear black and white self defence 100% of the time.

You dont seem to know what you are on about, and the only way anyone can come to conclusions like you have is if they take things out of context which you most certainly have.

I challenge you to find anything advocate the kind of unjust violence you are talking about.

you guys sure argue a lot without quoting sources. Some might even say
argument for it's own sake is violence of a sort. Perhaps Krishnamurti?
Anyway anyone who really wants to know has only to lift a finger, and have some curiosity.

I would have to back up Nature-lad on this.  I studied the Koran for a time, years ago, and when the verses in question are read in the proper context out of which they were intended to be read -- with an understanding of the Arabic from which it was translated -- the Koran actually prohibits aggression in general, and allows fighting only in self-defense.

It's hard to get good info on this these days, but I try to be objective about this and the above seems to be the truth.

Well honestly when I studied the Koran I was not bothered by the 109 verses in which post-9/11 everyone is saying God calls Muslims to kill any and every non-Muslim, if for no other reason than the fact that there are over 6,100 other verses, and when I studied it, the interpretation Nature-lad and myself have suggested was the accepted one.  Perhaps this insularity and prejudice is why so many Muslims hate us.  Not because God commanded them to.
