Well I think it's hard to deny religions role in American ideology. Both Bush's are a good example IMO. Bush Jr. initially called the invasion of Iraq a crusade. He later said that was a bad term to use, that it was going after evil people. murderous people. and that freedom is a gift of the divine. God bless America

I think any time you have a good guys and bad guys theme going religion has a role in that line being drawn. or at least morality, but I haven't seen an atheistic/humanistic leader so morality=religious ideology

the foundations of america were on "manifest destiny" and were a religious "crusade" all about taking over the land for the will ofGod

Its pretty pathetic... when the disgusting nature of Islam is debated people feel the need to compare it to Christianity for some reason... as though that is an excuse.  Its not.  Islam is disgusting and its disgusting in its own right.  Comparing it to Christianity is irrelevant, this isn't a competition.  When the disgusting nature of Christianity is discussed it too should be discussed in its own right.

People making these comparison are making excuses.  Excuses for a violent, oppressive and terrible culture and way of life.  If you excuse violent oppression you are part of the problem.

What was so bad about the Crusades? Weren't Christians being persecuted and wasn't it the Catholic Church's responsibility to protect Christians?

I dunno. Some (not all) of them seemed pretty horrific and ill-advised in retrospect. But I wasn't trying to argue at right or wrong, moreso human nature. I don't think I ever said anything about them being bad until you just asked. On a personal level human nature over history (including recent history) leaves me queezy and I don't like that one bit.

Perhaps not you, but that is the perception and why Bush felt the need to rephrase. If Bush had reiterated, "Heck yea it's a Crusade!"... would not have worked out well.

Everybody "knows" the Crusades were evil.

Man, I wish we could separate the criticism of islam from the criticism of christianity. They're both target-rich environments. And the defense of "well, yeah, but they do it, too" is a fucking weak diversion.

Also, Usalpsychonaut's criticism was pretty much correct except, perhaps technically, for his use of the term "Mainstream Muslim law" instead of "sharia law." And even that is forgivable since the majority of muslims (i.e., the "mainstream") endorse sharia law which, in turn, allows for the punishment of people who take the wrong drugs, watch the wrong movies, listen to the wrong music, and read the wrong books...in addition to a metric shit-ton of other things that are none of their fucking business.

One must be careful when peddling nonsensical apologetics.

I find it funny how the west is so against Islam when actually we are fucking up the world in far worse ways. 25% of the worlds resources 5% of the total population and that's not including Europe. The atheist and christian capitalists in the west have the world by the balls. And that's not to mention the war crimes perpetrated in the middle east which do engender the Islamic violence.

Not that the rest of the world would not do the same if they could these days but that idea that life was all about control of resources and buying and making things you don't need came mostly out of the American value system.

That is no excuse.  Two wrongs do not make a right.  They are human beings with the ability to make a choice.  They are not forced to throw gay people off of buildings because of US policy.  I find it pathetic, not funny, that you are making excuses for this behavior.
