I think attraction is largely dictated to us by our culture.

Nearly all of us were brought up to be attracted to the opposite sex. Some of us violently so under threat of disownment by our family, clergy, and friends. Yet even among those brought up in militant anti-gay environments, there are gay people.

And although in recent decades media and entertainment outlets have become more accepting of same-sex relationships, for the majority of human history, all media, churches, and social institutions were militantly against same-sex. In many countries (Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia) homosexuality is still deeply scorned and even warrant a death sentence, yet there are gay people there too who live in constant fear for their lives.

The gay fraction has remained steady at about 10% of the population throughout history. If what you say is true, that fraction should be increasing as society becomes more accepting of same-sex relationships.

You can see how the standards for attractiveness have changed throughout time and vary by culture.

Aesthetic attractiveness is a different animal than erotic attractiveness. I can look at some men and say that I find them to be good looking, even enjoyable to look at. But that's a far cry from saying that I get involuntarily hard fantasizing about them in bed with their ass lubed up for me.

I bet I could condition myself to like anal sex and find men attractive.

Not everyone has a broad spectrum of what they find attractive. Some are very specific. I have a friend who ONLY likes very skinny, very short, young, delicate and feminine Asian women. Nothing else. He has a one-track mind about this. I do not believe it is at all possible for him to "learn" to get hard and stay hard fucking a fat 60 year old man with a lot of body hair. Not in a million years no matter how hard he tried to condition it.

Would you? Imagine a 60 year old 300# guy with a beard and hair on his back on all fours on your bed. Can you honestly say that, with practice, you would look at that hairy ass and get an involuntary hard dick?

I bet I could condition myself to like

Could you condition yourself to be sexually turned on by 8 year old boys?

do you have a source for that 10% statistic? I bet it would be hard to measure that in the past.

don't more men become homosexual when there are no women around, like in prisons and on navy boats? isn't that why san fran is supposed to be so gay, because of all the sailors?

I think it's just some combination of genetics and reactions to conditioning, but then again, what isn't? I don't feel strongly enough about any more specific position to argue it. You may be right.

Thats because there are no other options, and most of those individuals serving life sentences dont go around banging each others buttholes, the ones that do were probably gay before hand and just never acted on such throbbing emotions.

BTW there is at least one study I know of that correlates homosexuality with brain morphology, but the evidence isn't enough to show a definitive link. The brain differences may be the result of gayness or the cause of gayness. The jury is still out.

For contemporary numbers, the Wiki puts it anywhere from a low of "Percentage of persons identifying as homosexual was 2–3%." up to a high of "a 2006 study suggested that 20% of the population anonymously reported some homosexual feelings". So the rough average is around 10%.

I bet it would be hard to measure that in the past.

Yeah, I'm not sure how estimates are made for the past, but I've read it's also 10% ballpark. I don't have any links handy, sorry.

Yeah, but out of necessity, not intrinsic desire.

I've never been in prison, but I learned a lot about it in a very long thread (200 pages) in a in a forum somewhere of a guy who went in for many years. It was like an fascinating autobiography and I couldn't stop reading it.

He told of the rapes that do go on, but are not as common as most people think. He was very candid and said that in the 20 or so years he was there, he was raped twice, and both times he laughed as it was happening because he's very fat and the rapist's dick barely reached his hole through his fat ass cheeks.

He also talked about drugs being fairly common in prisons. One day he and his cell mate took what they thought was heroin, but turned out to be ecstasy. They spent the night making out and sucking each other's dick.

He also said that when he got out, sex with another guy never crossed his mind again. So my point it that some people will fuck the same sex when they're desperate and there's no other choice, but not because they'd choose to if the opposite sex was available.

but I wonder if its the same kind of thing where jews would choose not to eat kosher but if they were starving and only non kosher food was available they'd eat it, but as soon as kosher food was available they'd go back to the kosher agian
