Don't tell him that!

He'll likely be disappointed- most myco club members HATE it when people ask them "Hey, can you take me hunting for actives??" or "So... where IS that patch exactly?"

But whatever, he can try his luck.

it takes time in the club for people to get to know you and then they are more likely to tell what to look for. and they will tell exactly what it is you have found. nearly 33% of the mssf are into actives in one way or another

yes, that is a moderate estimate even! I certainly didn't say a word about actives for 4 meetings and one hunt or so, until the myco society i was involved with invited me to identify at their fair, so I figured it was safe to wear my psilocybin molecule shirt to the fair. It wasn't explicit, only 2 people know what it symbolized.

Make friends first- then carefully bring up the active topic, and pay attention to whether they seem okay with the convo, or start looking around nervously. If they look like they dun wanna talk, don't push it.

I plan to make my first appearance to one of the MSSF meetings on the 20th of this month.  I'm familiar with David Campbell- he made an appearance at one of the San Diego Myco meets, and i reconnected at the MSSF Fungus Fair at teh beginning of december.  Also met Dennis Desjardin, pretty cool dude.

Too bad we don't all have little "shroomery" name tags to identify one another- but for those unfamiliar with the site, it would be looked down upon as a "druggie" thing.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll see you guys there and have no more than a guess as to who's a Shroomerite.  :wink:

Is MT. Diablo a good place to hunt? Anyone have good hunts around Auburn CA?...Can't find anyone experienced to go hunting with....

IO have heard that the cow pastures near the auburn airport produce libs but I havent verfied this. I have also seen people picking mushrooms at the bell road off ramp but I dont not know what they were picking. The dude had the perfect outfit. He had on his orage saety vest and a caltrans trash bag but he wasnt picking up trash. I saw him as i passed the exit so i got off on the next exit and went back to talk to him but he pulled away right as i pulled up. There was trash everywhere so I know he wasnt picking up trash. I checked around and there were chantrelles but he was picking something smaller. I have found actives in cameron park but they came in on the azaleas. Fibs have been found in sac but i havent found any. They do grow here but they just arent as abundant. PLus its too late in the season to find anything around here

Have any more info on the auburn airport finds? Or know where i can get some info?I see no cow pastures next to the airport...big fields no cows.. but i do know where others are in auburn.

Amanita muscaria does not contain the active chemicals (which are also a controlled substance) psilocybin nor psilocin, though they can cause hallucinogenic effects... Or very very bad nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, or BOTH!

I often pick mushrooms I end up tossing, but not entire colonies. It is a shame to pick an entire patch if you have no use.

I just finished drying mine in the oven.

here, before they take this thread off the main page, I wanted to make a reminder for the off season. Nice little side project anyone can do at home, and all it takes is maybe 1 square inch of chips from your favorite spot, like in the photo. This is a couple weeks here. Others are doing even better and already embedded in chips like shown

get some alder smoking chips by mail maybe, stuff it like in the photo after you get a decent carboard run...even if you can't fruit it indoors, you can always take it back outside and make more spots for yourself.

You almost can't lose. You can almost always have a little mycelium pile somewhere, off season or in season

it's been such a bad year for everybody, compared with years past...Next year might be even worse (we've been through droughts before here), so this is the alternative way..Fruiting is tough without a frigerator, but you can always grow mycelium in your closet at almost any temperature with p cyanescens and related

low maintanence and nearly free...just gotta keep it moist, that's it

this, pilgrims, is what it really looks like underneath the ground...the white stuff in the photo, mycelium running

MSSF meet- who was there? [Re: auweia]
    #6694324 -

Finally made it to an MSSF meet, but I was late.  :frown:  Got lost in SF again..... damn google/mapquest directions.

WEll, i was a little bored with the slide, and it seemed too hurried compared to the San Diego meets I've been to, but I'm sure the pre-lecture is fun, so i'll try to make it on time next month.
I wanted to show off my slugs, ooooh well.

So who went??  A Shroomerite lurker who had been keeping up with this thread recognized my slug cage.

There was a lot of hanging out and some mushroom ID before the slide show started. Several people brought mushrooms, including some wild A. bisporus that were massive - 12 inches in diameter. You brought in more mushrooms in than everyone else combined, and your mushrooms were much better - Those clusters of wild enoki's were really cool!!! I had no idea what they were but I will always recognize them now. I also had never seen some of the gymnopilus and earth star species that you had with you.

> So who went?? A Shroomerite lurker who had been keeping up with this thread recognized my slug cage.

It was hard to ignore the slug cage - After all, it is HOT PINK. And she was feeding them mushrooms.

I will start bringing spore prints to give away at these meetings, and I recommend that others do the same. There is one tonight in santa cruz, but I don't know how interesting it is, so I am not sure that I will go:

General Meeting
Wednesday, March 21, 7-9:00PM
Special location this month at the Scotts Valley Senior Center

Dr. Brian Perry is our March Speaker. Dr. Perry completed hi masters degree under Dr. Dennis Desjardins at San Francisco state University and went on to Harvard where he completed his PhD. He is now engaged in Post doctoral fellorship at SFSU. Brian will discuss the research involved in his doctoral disertation, dealing withethe large discomycete family Pyronematacaea(Pyronema, Scutellinia, Otidea, etc.)

p.s. Hi shroomery, this is my first post.

I would like to make all shroomery visitors are aware of the following:

1) mushroomobserver.org is a very cool scientific website where people post photos of the mushrooms they find. It is extra awesome because all the images are public domain, so anyone can use them for anything, for ever. There are some really good mycologists on there, but it is missing photos of actives. I would like to encourage everyone that has photos of wild active mushrooms to visit the site and put them up. I got permission from Auweia to post his pics, but more are needed!

2) wikipedia.org has articles on everything fungi related, and some of the articles on actives need some work. This month, the Fungi Collaboration group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Fungi/Fungi_Collaboration) is working on the article Psilocybe. They need more shroomery members to help - Peter Werner is doing most of the work. I have learned a lot about mycology by writing wikipedia articles, and have written the following far:

* Agaricus subrutilescens
* Chamaeota
* Cortinarius ponderosus
* Conocybe cyanopus
* Conocybe filaris
* Conocybe tenera
* Conocybe smithii
* Copelandia
* Gymnopilus
* Gymnopilus spectabilis
* Gymnopilus luteofolius
* Hericium ramosum
* Hypholoma aurantiaca
* Inocybe aeruginascens
* Panaeolina
* Schizophyllaceae
* William Murrill

Wikipedia is an extremely open system - You can see everything I have ever done on there with this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Alan_Rockefeller

I am looking for pictures of Chamaeota, Conocybe cyanopus, Conocybe smithii, Copelandia (any species), Panaeolus cyanescens and Inocybe aeruginascens. If you have any pics of these and don't mind releasing them into the public domain, please PM me.

Its amazing how fast this stuff colonizes wood chips. A whole bag of chips was fully colonized by 4 cups of spawn in a month. I think its about 15 gallons of wood chips

This stuff sure does bruise
