Bird seed?? What did you do, just mix in some colonized chips with some pasteurized birdseed and wait?

i hope not. you do not want to be pasteurizing birdseed, particularly not 5 gal of it that is going to be sitting around in or near your living space.

i'm betting he sterilized it.

because contamination would be far too likely?

The reason I ask, it because a trash bag does not seem like the most sterile or contained thing to use if you are worried about contaminants.

the seed was pressure cooked and colonized in 1 gallon glass jars. Once colonized the seed can be stores in any semi sterile container. The mycelium produces antibiotics that will fight off any competitors. New trash bags are probably 99% sterile. Trash bag factories don't produce many mold or competitive spores

Oh, gotcha. I thought the bird seed was colonized in the trash bag.

Makes sense now.

Cyans? [Re: CureCat]
    #6606681 -

Closest looking to cyans I have found so far. They don't behave/appear active though.

These were found on a golf course in the East Bay, growing on moist mounds of some kind of sod.

The Caps are brown. Stems white. Gills are white. No blue bruising.

Spore prints are light brown.

Am I close?

No. Not even close. Have you seen what cyans look like??

Yes, I've seen lots of pics. At least the caps look similar.

if that's your definition of similar, you need to pay more attention to detail.

Agreed. We were not chastising, simply being frank. Safely identifying mushrooms requires a LOT of attention to detail.

BerkeleyBuddha - Your qualifications don't change our objective opinion of the situation.  We are not trying to be ass-holes, we are trying to inform.  However, some of us have poor social skills, which lead  to misundertandings when translated through the internet.

We're just trying to explain that you need to do a lot of research and use a lot of scrutiny when considering eating a mushroom you might find.
Chills..

I have very bad social skills. I think it is from eating all those mushrooms by myself and locking myself in my dirty dank 1 bedroom apartment and watching infomercials all night and being determined that the government is out to get us
