Do you think that aerial mycelium can be indicative of some form of contamination?
Perhaps too much air exchange? Not enough air exchange?

Here is a culture that I'm certain was contaminated.

After transferring, (to my untrained eye) the rhizomorphic growth made the culture look ideal for inoculating grains.

Each grain jar ended up getting contaminated. 2 liquid cultures were also made using the Josex needle poke technique.

Notice how some of the growth seems to start off as "flat" but all of the growth except for the area around 1 to 3 o'clock begins to grow "upwards".



This is where it gets strange

The growth starts off kind of flat with almost tomentose type growth.
It then "blows up" - but not uniformly. The 12 o'clock side of the plate took a bit longer to "blow up" compared to the 6 o'clock side of the plate.

Notice how between 9 and 1 o'clock, the mycelium that "blows up" even grew some rhizomorphic looking tendrils.



This plate didn't "blow up" in the same way but there is aerial growth as well as what looks like rhizomorphs growing directly from the transfer.



Time goes on

After the culture "blew up" it started shooting out ropes.

Could the puffiness/"blowing up" areas be the mycelium trying to grow over some kind of contamination?

It's strange that the morphology changed 3 times on one plate.

Flat growth > puffy growth > rhizomorphic growth.


Nowadays I'm looking for "flat" growth to transfer from.

Agar is used as a method of growing cultures on a 2D plane.

It is hard to ignore the aerial growth, however.
