Are you usually near a source of water when you find them or deep in deciduous forest?

Deciduous forest but there is quite a bit of water sources too. Delaware river about a mile away, brooks and streams nearby.

I think there’s a few weeks to go in my area.  Highs are just getting into the 70’s and nights still mid 50’s.  Thought this group looked cool.  More pins coming.

I'm in love with this morphology. It's similar to what we often get here in NJ, but more pristine in its shape.

So the grasses are so high now that they can't be navigated and they smother out the ovoids. I have no mulched areas I can find. Is the wooded areas near the same creeks my next best option for finding a haul?

Just got back from my fishing trip in North Central Pa....didn't find any ovoids, but nature was amazing...a newly born fawn, and some of the biggest morchella that I have ever seen. Also saw a black bear momma with 2 cubs and a large herd of elk that I didn't get pics of.:sunny::peace:

Alright fellas...going to attempt to change my search area today from small creek to big river. Koods had confirmed he's had luck at said river. The temperature has been stupid hot but we are still making it down to 50s at night. Got a decent amount of rain Sunday and Monday.

Told y'all I wasn't giving up! Also, it looks like in my neck of the woods wee have a cold front moving in which will generate (from what I've been told) perfect fruiting conditions. 70 degree days 50 degree nights and a chance of rain every day for the rest of the week.

So even if i don't find any today I can be scouting choice locations and keeping an eye out for mycelium. I'm cautiously optimistic at this point, working to keep my expectations realistic. On a side note, I've heard people say that the debris piles don't fruit until late in the season. Would this be considered late in the season?

When it's consistently this hot, it's late in the season.  Look deep into the debris piles.

A note about how oddball ovoid fruiting can be, though: discovered a giant debris pile last spring that only fruits very early season.

Awesome stuff. Those morels are monsters.  Get to see your boys again this trip?

ETA: a herd of elk, eh?  I've been thinking of taking a trip to SW VA one of these days to see if I can observe the budding herd located down there.  I jumped a bear about four weeks ago ovoid hunting...smelled his gnarly ass before I saw him. He split outta there with the quickness once I jumped him.  Started seeing bear sign three seasons ago in one of my spots.  Now see it all over every time I go there.  Not ready to get between a momma and a cub anytime soon but it almost seems inevitable.

I can’t believe how terrible this season has been. A majority of my good reliable spot did nothing and everything happened in  a couple days. We went from nothing to full explosion to rotting in four days. Only one flush. Depressing.

The weirdest thing is how the one creek that really performed this year I had NEVER found ovoids on before this year, and I found them all along that creek from downtown DC all the way up into the Maryland suburbs.

The spots that fruited on my stream were spots I avoided in the past because of no fruits.

Maybe because all the flooding last year?

It's my first season and I made out great for my first year. Several ounces. Sad to see it coming to an end. Having a hard time finding any now though I did find a nice haul today in a mulch pit. Nothing like walking along and finding some mushies.

I don't know Koods,I've had the same thing going for my last couple seasons but fortunately, some of my seeded areas panned out to save my season. I really figured, with all the rain that this year would be a bumper crop. Who knows, maybe the off season floods did more damage than we thought....maybe the high water was there long enough to drown the mycellium? I know that last fall, I found zero in normally reliable fall areas where I used to do very well.

Who knows, these are mysterious little fungi that may not be explained away entirely by science. They seem to present themselves when my head is right for them, not, necessarily when I want them.:mushroom2:

The season has been really bad in new zealand as well.... Taken such a long time to produce a few patches but nothing major in good reliable spots like you mention... Sucks big time :frown:

Glad your trip was amazing.  Was hoping you'd find some ovoids up that way.  Did you take any spawn to place around for next yrs trip?  Cool chaga find btw!  I haven't had a chance to mess around with that species yet.

That variety has been crap around our way too.  I'm sure the flood put a damper on things this season.  Gotta load your area up with the other variety.  That's what I've been doing hardcore this yr.  They do much better and fruit earlier too.
