Just curious because it seems like very few - if any - finds have been made on the coastal plain, where the bedrock of the east coast is buried under the sandy silt. Essentially eastern Virginia. The Delmarva, and southeastern New Jersey. It ends just south of New York City. The geography of the coastal plain is flat, sandy or marshy and pine and conifer predominate. I don’t think ovoids like it.

It’s actually the crater of a very large asteroid impact that hit around Norfolk, Virginia 30 million years ago.

This area is definitely costal plain. A lot of sand and marsh around here.  I pm’d my area to you.  I’ve been looking for three years and haven’t found any here.  I feel I may have been looking too early in the season as the ocean keeps us cool here. There is no boxelder mainly oak and pine.  Definitely no suitable flood plain habitat.  I am shocked at this patch.  What are the chances this little patch of mulch had spores land, germinate, and thrive.  I feel blessed today.

I suspect colonized mulch brought in from elsewhere, but you never know. As far as I can tell you’re the first person to find ovoids anywhere near your location.

I got a report of someone finding ovoids in mulch in the Dallas area last week.

Hi guys!
So I have this weirdly impatient-type feeling resulting from the fact that I've just learned about ovoids, even though I've been a fan of cubes for years, and I live in central/western VA at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mtns in what appears to be prime territory for these beauties. The salt in the wound is the fact I've been an avid morel hunter for 12+ years, scrambling along river banks every single spring, probably walking right past ovoids in search of morels.

The idea that I could've (and most likely have) passed right by p.ovoids year after year drives me insane! I usually follow rivers up the mountains in and around Shenandoah Nat'l Park hunting morels, so my morel season goes later than  people in the flat parts of the state. My best morel hunting typically happens the first week or so of May, which (according to my recent research) is prime time for ovoids.

Anyway, enough whining about what could have been. My main purpose here is to seek advice from anyone in the same area as me, so if any of you guys feel like filling me in, I promise you will be teaching someone who loves and respects the world of fungi and I feel like I can become a very productive member of the ovoid foraging community, especially if I'm as good at finding them as I am morels!

My most urgent question would be, given the recent cool weather in Va, is it still too late for any shot at success? What is the typical season here in Va, late April-early June? Also, without any photos is it still somewhat safe to assume my morel areas could potentially produce ovoids? Again, I primarily hunt along small rivers/creeks, and many of the places I find myself in resemble many of the pics I've seen here, so I may have just answered my own question. I guess knowing what types of wood ovoids prefer would really answer that ( I primarily trek among tulip poplar, sycamore, and ash with occasional slippery elm/elm).

Finally, if anyone here lives in the same area and doesn't mind getting together, I'd be more than happy to show a couple of my morel spots IRL if you wouldn't mind taking me out to an ovoid spot. ( I respect the secrecy that comes with a good mushroom patch, and would not even care if there were not enough for myself, I just want the knowledge/experience to be able to find them myself!)

Thanks in advance, and sorry for such a long post. Just eager to learn and excited to have a new shroom to seek out!

quincytheFree, I'd suggest you read thru this yrs thread and previous yrs threads as well.  Any question you may have has mostly likely already been answered throughout the ovoid threads.  It is pretty late in the season for most parts, but we haven't really had that many consecutive 90+ days to say the season is for sure done.  I will say that the vegetation is already over my head in most places and even the shorter grass isn't short anymore.  You almost have to be right up on them to find anything.  There's still a chance tho, so best of luck to you if you go looking.  :mushroom2:

Ovoids? Growing from mulch, no bruising tho but they have hollow stems and gills attached to stem. Waiting on a spore print but yesterday I took of one was black

quincytheFree, If you have valley's with small creeks and plenty of tree coverage, I'd suggest that. Walking right on the creek and going where no other man has gone always seems to work. Where I live these type of areas only started popping at the very end of May, I guess they take longer to warm up. It was like the 2nd half of the season was just starting, but we got hit by flooding and that ended that.
