I'm so glad I finally found these pictures.  These are from a cultivated patch at different times of the fruiting season.  Notice all the different "phenotypes" we keep talking about?  I think temperature is more of a cause of the "phenotypes" then actual genetics.

These spores are totally DC spores and pointed caps.

Those are all very different than the usual local variety.

I started finding chanterelles today, so ovoid season 2019 is in the dustbin of history

Spores are from here. Why I think it's more temperature than genetics.

That flush in the picnic area mulch back in 2013 was mid June. I haven’t seen anything but a stray fruit for three weeks. I really don’t get what happened this year - there’s nothing noteworthy that can explain this epic dud of a season.

It's weird because I had a better season than last year when you where pulling up pounds.  These things are a mystery for sure.

That park’s mulch pile is totally colonized and you can usually find them in the mulch spread on the grounds, but nothing like it did back then.

Cyan season was pretty slow as well, only had one good patch going all fall when usually you cant not find them. Granted i wasn't hittin it as hard as usual but definitely an off season this past fall.



Thanks for sharing your hunts, always good stuff no matter how abundant the fruits.

Crap season in New Zealand too, most of my old faithful patches are barren, not even any inactives.

Its over, sadly flooding brought things to a sudden end about 10 days ago. It was a good one here in Pittsburgh with near record rainfall this May, so I'm thinking my first season will be one to remember. I ended up finding 9 patches in 4 locations. Now working to seed new ground and reseed the flooded areas.

Really interesting stuff, and beautiful patch!  I still think that the variety difference is caused by something in the substrate though.  The reason I say that is that in the areas we find certain varieties, they never chance appearance, no matter what the temp may be or when in the season it is.  It may be something as subtle as ph or perhaps something to do with the local grasses they get into while feeding.  The only way to really determine the factor involved is to do soil testing in different areas and compare results.

I'd def say you had a good first season.  Congrats again to you and all the others that found their first this yr.  It's good to hear your making new patches and securing existing areas.  One thing I learned from last yr is that it's good to start some spots above the record flood line, usually up a lil on the sloped areas nearby.  After seeing things get so rearranged from floods I wished I had did a couple more of those setups.  Another good spot seems to be on the downstream side of large trees that are too big and anchored to be moved by flood water.  There was a good number of these that didn't get moved, but had debris piled up along the upstream side of things.  There's still a chance for these setups to be buried, but at least they won't get washed away.

That sucks, sorry to hear that.  I know they can't all be bumper seasons, but it's not fun trying to deal with an unproductive season.  Hope it picks up for you over there and your able to find enough before the season is completely over. :mushroom2:

In the pnw I've seen both phenos fruit from the same wood chips I placed them in so I'm not certain it's a substrate thing.

Well, I think I know why my ovoids didn't fruit this year,  they have eaten everything in the flower pot and had a huge void in the center, kind of like a bread soup bowl without the soup.

I have never seen mycelium RIP through a substrate like this, a 25 gallon flower  pot of woodchips/twigs gone in 6-7 months, I think the slugs and snails could have eaten the middle, but I don't know for sure. The mycelium is so stiff and strong, I can see how different mycelium can be used in so many ways.

This time, I took several large sections of mycelium and inoculated a few more flower pots and a couple beds on the ground. I also used some to inoculate a tub, it has been in fruiting conditions for a few days now, almost a week.

Ovoidiocystidiata and caerulescens have been the hardest to work with so far, but I'm determined. My next challenge is to keep slugs and snails out, I use old pantyhose on the flower pots now, but the ground patches are problem. Anyone ever tried using diatomaceous earth mixed in the substrate?

Pulled what I believe are some dried/rotten ovoids out of a patch of mulch. Too far gone to ID/eat so I tossed em in some mulch in my back yard.
