Microclimates or bust at this point. Mostly under shady knotweed.

Nice, you were able to find some in that thick stuff! :congrats: ..  I got to go out hiking around with TroutBum today and had a really nice day searching a couple spots along a producing river.  We didn't find any ovoids, but I was able to hit up a bunch of debris piles with some colonized stuff from PA.  The last spot had a lot of knotweed, but we weren't searching thru that thick ass stuff.  This season has just been blah for the local variety.  Last yr at this time there were clusters everywhere and this yr they're just here n there hiding in the grass.  I really think the floods and lack of April rain messed things up this season for us.  Even tho the ovoids aren't out like they should be, we still had a good time and a productive day.

The one cool thing we came across today.

Nice, yeah the knotweed is brutal right now, spider webs and pollen that wrecks your sinuses, or mine anyway. I spent an hour putting together piles of dead box elder limbs and adding stem butts, myc, and expired ovoids. Thanks for the recommendation, my technique was similar to what is pictured in your gallery. Cool insect btw, never seen one of those before.

A question, have you ever had fall fruitings on log / debris piles you colonized earlier in the spring of the same year?

It's always been the following spring that the projects I've done fruit.  Some ppl have had to wait 2 seasons before they saw anything, so only a yr is pretty good.  Once they're established tho you should be able to find them in the fall.  Fall hunting can be difficult due to the leaves falling and covering everything, sometimes whole clusters.  If you know where exactly where to look tho you have a better chance of finding them.  Glad your helping to spread them around and hope your projects work out for you.

That Pennsylvania variety is a much more prolific fall fruitier. The ones around here barely do anything in the fall. I will see 10,000 ovoids in the spring and maybe a half dozen in the fall.

That's discouraging koods, fresh ovoids as the weather cools back down sounds outstanding. What if I was to arm myself with a leaf blower?

Just a late season run, the chunky phenotypes are more resistant as the season closes off

I may make one more check tomorrow depending on the weather but I'm not expecting much. It's been over 80°F for a while now. I threw some Cube trash in a shady spot in one of my patches and threw some grass over it though, so I wanna see what that does if nothing else.

Is this week of 80+ temps bring the end too the ovoids I couldn't quite get my hands on this year? Or will they fruit anytime up to the fall months as long as the proper conditions? Thanks for your insight as always, guys.

Nice!  That's 3x more than we found the other day lol.  :super:

Alchemycologist & Tryptaphenalysergi

The season usually ends after 5 days with highs in the 90s.  In previous yrs we've found em into the second week of June.  Southeast may be done after this week, due to the warm front, but I imagine areas not affected will be fine for a couple more weeks.

Its been a good first season in the burgh, no shortage of rain. I'm amazed these guys been with-in walking distance all my life. A few people hit the cow patty field north of here but never any talk about oviods.

We had our first dry spell of the season last week, but it rained last night and just started up again. Basically the early season spots seem done, but the wooded valleys with creeks running threw them are just now starting to pop. This proved true with my first find (three small patches) last week in one of these places. Keep in mind that pitts is all hills and valleys some very deep with lots of tree cover. They just take longer to warm up and they stay damp longer. Its probably going to burn out fast, hopefully a few more weeks tho.

Also found my first Laughing Gym last week. Was a exciting first find but imo not worth the effort.

Anyways, thank you all for doing what you do. This usename has to die after this season ends, but ill be back around at some point with a more secure one.

It’s been hot but I still think there’s going to be another big flush if we get a cool down and a few cloudy days with rain.

Side question...is the 80 degree day/60 degree night, high humidity and hard fast storm cells good fruiting conditions for panaeolus cinctulus? That seems my only hope for an active at this point. Got a horse farm next to me that has produced a lot of foes and paps but not cincs, yet.

Gymnopilus too brother, they're so cool when you find em. Cincts grow pretty much all the time just keep checking.

Last year was my first year hunting and I started in the fall with gyms. No luck, but I did nearly shit myself when I came across a huge cluster of honey mushrooms. Was convinced I had found gyms, only to be quickly disappointed lol. If it's not too late i have to extend the search area for ovoids. I'm convinced my creek does not have them but there are confirmed finds at the potomac 30 miles away. I'll be back on the hunt for gyms and the elusive caerulipes this fall as well as cinctulus. Truth be told I feel much more at home tromping through the woods than sifting through horse feces 😁

I'm pretty confident the mushrooms will reveal themselves to me when the time is right. Until then I'll keep searching...
