I replied to this under someone else's reply. Phunky.. anyway, it's good to see people planting and replacing near me. That makes 100 percent of us as far as I know. Everyone I teach, learns to respect the biosystems. Gotta make plenty of prints to check them anyways. Might as well make spore slurries too. It's easy to do. And it works if you do it when they are in fruit. Incidentally, it makes them easier to find too. Because you are looking for a good place to plant them, you're automatically looking for a place they are already growing!

I don’t pull stem butts or whole clusters out of the ground anymore either.  I just reach down until I feel the stem butt and pinch it off.  If it comes out I just put it back in the ground.  The first year I found ovoids I pulled up a bunch of stem butts and whole clusters and the spot hasn’t fruited back good since then.  Also, all the dirty stem butts in your bag gets your shrooms all dirty anyways.

Thats how we do out west. pinch or cut and leave the mycilium undisturbed best as possible. Start pulling up chunks and patch may not fruit again. if i'm gentle picking the same spot may fruit 3 times in one season. this thinking is aplied to all woodlovers out west. also try and leave anything that hasn;t dropped spores yet as well.

This is how I pick them also. If I do pull some clusters out for the stem butts, I put the butt portion in a separate bag so it doesn't get the dirt into the fruits.

I haven't found nearly as many wild mushrooms this year as in the past...if it weren't for my cultivated patches and some good fruiting in Pa., I'd have a shit season.Anyway, here is my assessment of the maybe why's the wild fruits aren't as prolific as they once were in my area.

1) floods[/color] Even though these guys grow on "flood" planes, the voracity and intensity of the floods have been pretty much unprecedented the last few years. This has buried some of my spots deep under bars of sand and they have never recovered.

2) Lesser Celandine This invasive species is completely carpeting most of the creekside spots that once had natural grasses and nettle. It completely stifles any growth under it and wins out over them because of it's early in the season growth. Also, when it finally dies, it becomes a slimy, moldy mess that doesn't allow much of anything, including mycellium to grow or to fruit for a couple weeks except for a stray fruit here and there.

3) Emerald ash borer This invasive bug has completely wiped out  every single ash tree everywhere. Where once there were groves of towering shade trees, there are now just skeletons which give no shade to the mixed woods below. This in turn allows the grasses to grow much higher because of the extra sunlight and stifles the fruiting or the ability to find the fruits because of the taller grasses and undergrowth. There is also an insect that has just begun to hit the black walnut trees that will effectively wipe them out within 10 years, say the scientists......if you look, you can already see them dying at the ends of their branches.

4) Added hunting pressure It seems as though there are more and more people searching for these guys than there once was.I hunted for years before I saw another hunter in the woods whereas now, some sites like mushroom observer allow the GPS coordinates on posted pics to be extracted from the photos....allowing any newb with a little savvy to pinpoint a spot that may have taken you years to find. This feature can be disabled in phone camera so, I recommend disabling the GPS before taking photos.

I hope that I'm overreacting but, I have seen a sort of steady decline in my natural spots over the last few years...I hope it's not permanent. In any case, People like Relic and Textured Sounds are working to repropogate some spots which is awesome...I've been doing this but the celandine has crept into areas that were replanted and stifled the growth.  Try to do this as far away from the celandine as possible. Anyway, that's  :2cents::sunny::peace::mushroom2:

Had some luck up in PA today.  Saw a couple nice small clusters and randoms here n there.  There was also a good amount of pins around, so later this week should be a sure thing.  Also, had a chance to stop by and check on our project patch.  Three out of the four setups had around 20 fruits each.  Not sure why one of the stick piles isn't really doing anything other than a couple small ones.  Going to mulch them here soon though, so maybe that will help out and get things going for it.

Here's a couple things we came across today.

Beautiful stuff TS, as always!

Thought I found a nice patch. Don’t really see any of the bruising I’m supposed to see though. Some of the caps do look bluish but maybe my eyes are seeing what they want to see.

looks like they could be the same as these which are not ovoids.  found these by thousands on a mulched trail.  Crazy amounts of them everywhere in mulch everywhere I am looking. Has brownish spores.  Argocybe?

I was really hoping to find ovoids around Central Ohio near Columbus but still haven't found a single one in presumably good habitats.  I'd be happy with just one I could print so I can get agar going and start mulch projects and spread them in the wild.  I wonder if columbus being an old ancient now dry lake bed and really flat is an issue.  Most hot spots seem to be a bit more hilly.

I bought a print from freespores that says it was collected in PNW as a contingency plan.  I figure they should be able to get going in Ohio just like genetics found in Ohio would be able to.

I am about 100 miles from the ohio river.  I am thinking about taking a road trip to Wayne national forest to try and hunt some of the creeks that feed into the Ohio river.  I could go tomorrow or some day next week.  Not sure when would be a better time.  Looks like rain is forecasted this Friday.

I don’t know. The ones you posted look a little more brown with no blues or greens at all and seem to flatten out for the most part as opposed to these that get that wavy cap. I’ll try and post better pics later today in the i.d section. I’m at work and came across them and they look so much like ovoids.. I was stuffing my pockets when people weren’t looking and hoping they’ve bruised when I check on them in a bit.

Wish I could have really inspected them more but there was people around. Tell you one thing though they do smell like cubes to me. But again I may just be seeing and smelling what my minds wants

Got back out there for a couple hours today to check the debris piles.  They’re slowly starting to fruit from them.  Found a small stash of some really nice looking fruits.  I wish I could have stayed longer.  Next week I’m hitting it hard.

Those def look like ovoids.  I'd be really surprised if they weren't blue the next time you look at the ones you handled.

Forgive me for not knowing this however, is it against the forum rules to offer to send people spore prints? If so ignore me. If not, I am willing to send spore prints to anyone who wants them. These are from Central Pennsylvania, 30 minutes from Montgomery.

When you get access to the marketplace you could do a give away.  You’ll probably get more takers in there than here.

I think it’s 50 posts so you’re almost there.

Found what looked to be a promising island last night looking on sat earth. Paddled in this morning and spotted one before I was even off the yak. I dubbed her Ovoid Island because there were fruits under every Box elder I came across. Lots of smalls and pins for another day. This cold weather is huge right now. Prolonging the season and near freezing temps at night have deterred bug population. The mosquitos were tearing me a new one the previous weeks.

Thanks again, to all those sharing knowledge, tips, habitat pics, etc. Little more than a month ago I didn't even know what an Ovoid was. I stumbled upon Shroomery through some random morel link. Best of luck everyone.

Came home and now I’m seeing the blue all over the place.

Posting with and without flash to make sure I’m not crazy

I had a feeling they weren’t bruising when fresh because they were so moist. A feeling that Gman reaffirmed later. When I saw them my gut said ovoids and I’m 90% sure they are

DracoMalfoy and ghost37, Nice finds :super:

Went back to the new spot today that I had checked out the other week.  The area looks really good, but only ended up finding 1 spent cluster.  It was completely spored on and dirty from the sandy ground.  Ended up taking a handful of caps and placed them around as I checked out the rest of the area.  After not finding anything else I went back to the spent cluster again and gathered the remaining caps, placing them in suitable places before heading out.

Here's the only thing I was able to see today
