Honestly, I think the "sandy soil" preference is way overrated. As a matter of fact, I rarely find them in sandy soil unless it rains very frequently over a decent period of time. Sand lets the moisture escape too quickly for the voracious appetite of ovoid mycelium.

I have had most of my luck in and around a decent top soil layer on a flood plain. They don't like swampy areas and, like Don Johnson said, you will rarely see them co-habitate with skunk cabbage. The areas that get tons of sand washed up from flood waters rarely carry ovoids. The key is having buried twigs, preferably box elder that have worked into the soil usually within 100 yards of a stream. Another ovoid preference is stinging nettle and stiltgrass. :mushroom2:

I find mine usually in and around piled up wood from previous floods (debris piles).

Just shows how diverse a habitat they grow in.  Debris piles tend to fruit later in the season though.

This picture about sums up my spring so far. Every time I see the tops of caps that look like ovoids--be it natural habitat or mulch--they turn out to be agrocybes.

You're right. They do fruit in the debris piles but it is almost always later in the season unless it is that Susquehanna phenotype which seem to fruit faster than the others. The other trait that I've noticed is that the debris piles pretty much have to remain intact for them to fruit. Recent storms and high waters can really mess with the mycelium's ability to  consolidate enough to fruit.

I agree, all debris piles I’ve broken up the mycelium is barley forming so far, it needs more time here in pa.

The last few cold spells haven't helped, that's for sure.

I think after the next rain or two as temps go back into the 60s and 70s us further north states will start getting more action.

Hit a local park today and the Ohio River. Found a patch of whats probably Agrocybe at the park (no pics), and the rest on the north shore of the Ohio. Found what could be ovoids walking back to my truck along the tracks.

I think they might be?

There’s not many ovoid spots that don’t have a healthy agrocybe presence. You’re looking in the right spots. Agrocybes are much more visible than ovoids. Agrocybes stand out. They tend to be brighter, larger and taller. They often fruit right out in the middle of a pile of mulch where there is no vegetation. Ovoids really like grasses and other ground cover. Areas where there’s mulch under a layer of green is best. You’ll almost always find the ovoids along the fringe where the mulch interfaces with the plants.

Some examples from today

Damn that’s a nice cluster. Do you tend to find larger clusters like that more so in mulch than otherwise?

I can find them around that invasive celandine plant right? I found a massive patch by a creek but it’s everywhere. I hope that won’t stop me.

Most pics I see on here there’s celandine, stiltgrass or nettle nearby.

It’s starting to die off already in areas. Should be a gross moldy mess in a week or two.

This is not my biggest cluster I’ve found but by far the most beautiful bunch of fruiting specimen I have ever seen. I am going back this morning before work to pick them. I’ll take another photo but damn they look so yummy.

Dude!! So wish we were down there this week!  Your finding some awesome spots and taking some beautiful pics this year.  :congrats::bigblunt:
