The main factors in how far away from a creek or river will be the size of said creek/river and how wide the flood plain is.  Ovoids will mostly be along stretches of hot spots that coincide with how the debris was deposited.  This can occur anywhere from right along the bank to hundreds of feet back.  When I'm looking thru a new area I'm hunting box elder, mainly ones that have lost their upper branches, and then looking for ovoids when I find suitable food.  Most of wild mushroom hunting is habitat hunting, no matter the species.




Went out yesterday and checked on the area I've been hiking around that was flooded last yr.  Still nothing from the local phenotype, but did find about a dozen small fruits from 2 PA transplants.  The first 2 pics are from a small pile (1' x 1') that I've been feeding at the end of the season for a couple yrs.  All I do is gather up some dead box elder branches and lay them on top of the old stuff, parallel to each other like debris piles, and they keep coming back.  The second set of pics is from a transplant that fruited nicely last yr, but I thought was lost due to the floods rearranging everything.  Found these lil guys popping up along the edge of a fresh debris pile, not where I put them.  Couldn't even locate where they were originally because the stick I had marking the location was washed away as well.  Definitely made my day to know they've been naturally spread around and given a lot of new food.  Both of these finds help to confirm again that these fruit earlier than the other ones.  Looking forward to next week and all the pics that should be coming in.
