Question - Does novelty exist?
    #22947133 -

A few questions I would like to pose:

- Does novelty, as it is generally defined, as being original (Being a first/only of its kind) truly exist?

- Does it not perhaps only pertain to the outward/surface expression of the idea itself, rather than the effect/emotion/feeling gathered from said expression, that is being perceived (as it exists in different space/time from previous ideas) as being a completely separate occurrence?

- Should we not rather judge the novelty of an idea by means of the effect/emotion/feeling it has on the general population, rather than the outward appearance of such an idea?

- Thus, for example, could two outwardly different instances of the worst possible pain from two different people, be in fact, the same pain (feeling) in relation to the subjective perceptions of these individuals?

- Furthermore, historically, could the overall emotional impact on an individual/generation of, let's say, WW1 be the same as all the other great wars? So too for all the different revolutions, protests, etc.

- Can one deduce from this then, that as an individual - novelty in fact does not exist, at least not as it is generally defined and as it can be reduced to feeling/emotion alone?

Hope this makes sense.

Just out of curiosity, what is your purpose in posing this question? Of what import is it for you personally? That's what interests me. :satansmoking:

I sometimes feel like the human race is revolving in loops, without us truly noticing, ourselves as individuals, and as a whole species.

The prophecies are always coming true.

The revolution is always rising.

The anti-Christ is always coming.

It's like we're stuck in a loop, unable to truly move forward. Our scenery is changing, but inside the same processes are repeating themselves over and over and over. Over short periods of time, and over longer periods of time. It's the old "history always repeats itself" dilemma, most likely...Just interested to how far this extends.

Novelty is generally something of value to an individual.

It's very much an expression which is evident in the diversity of what classifies as 'novelty'.

Yes of course we are, I  have often posted that emotionally we are still basically where we were at the beginning of recorded history.  History repeats for that reason and likely always will.

I'm glad I asked. It's a very good topic for discussion. Of course that's all it is. We are also human and even if you are the one that is noticing this and the other 99% are not this is how that goes too  historically. Always, in any time in history it seems there is a tiny fraction of  humanity that is awake to what we really are doing. And of course in the same loop as you call it, that tiny fraction for the most part thinks they can wake up the other part.  There is no evidence that that could happen. But it's fun to talk about isn't it. :hehehe:

I was thinking more along the lines of what would happen if we were able to accelerate these processes and treat ourselves like animals that are being studied objectively.

For example, let's say there exists a branch of humans who have removed themselves from the system, and are watching over us ensuring the repetition - for they know it would be the only way for us to survive, and move forward inch by inch. An amoral approach seems a fitting starting point.

But, like you said, just for fun! I don't believe in all the shit I write...

Big picture wise, there is no such thing. Actions repeat time and again, it just seems novel to us.

The point is to journey through it not skip the journey.

There is more detail to such pronouncements... However, the point is for you to journey and thus discover this detail for yourself to a degree.. For, this adds : fidelity

One might need access to the whole to check for novelty. How else to asses novelty between inner experiences except with outward expression and diving back down?

I think there is a high potential for re-ordered recapitulation of our sense impressions in the human mind, and then expression. Perhaps it's just a complex cut and paste in space and time. What drives the rearrangement, and do we disengage from continuity? What is the work space for creative flagellation?

I'm drifting from your questions...

We have simple descriptions for emotional states, and people seems to find agreement under the umbrella of those words. But to what extent does the language lead the experience in these cases? "I'm sad." "I'm sad too." "My family was just bombed to pieces." "My computer crashed and I lost my saved game."

Zooming in far enough, the apparent pieces lose distinction. What is novel above is same same below, as least in a particle view of things. Perhaps there is a layer of abstraction where emotions are fundamentally the same stuff. But our whole experience seems to be informed by and entwined with sense impressions on the scale of human context. As an individual, one may be able to navigate to whatever threshold of apprehension one chooses, but most of us zoom back out for lunch.

Novelty by definition is one of those strange English words that have way to many synonyms. Just looking in the dictionary we see that novelty can be:

originality, newness, freshness, unconventionality, unfamiliarity; difference, imaginativeness, creativity, innovation, modernity.

Or as concepts to describe physical objects like:
knickknack, trinket, bauble, toy, trifle, gewgaw, gimcrack, ornament, kickshaw.

In both cases, novelty seems to be things that we consider "good" like originality and toy, but then novelty also seems to describe things we may consider to be "bad" like unfamiliarity or trifle.

So my answer is, Screw this word!! Lets just lose it altogether. There are SOOOO many words like this in English that can really only be used in context and as spoken words. I like that about the spoken language but as for written language, these words really shouldn't be used in my opinion.

Genesis 11:6-7- The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
