why is it a sin to be intoxicated?
    #18167031 -

I hear this a lot now from Christians. Its a sin to smoke weed or drink because your removing yourself from your natural state and creating a false consciousness. What are your thoughts on this?

Christians also say its a sin because its illegal, and we must obey the laws of the land. So why did Jesus tell the Roman governor that no man has power over him. Only the father in heaven.

they don't want anyone to experience any altered states of consciousness because they may (gasp) start to think for themselves?

That's weird, because it seems like Jesus was a fan of wine. One of his better known miracles was making a whole bunch of wine out of water for a wedding when they ran out, plus at the last supper he said to drink wine to remember him.

The way I look at it, there is no "False Consciousness". If you are experiencing it, than it's true. Correct?

Only thing I can figure is Christians want to walk a straight and narrow path. What is the point of living if you only obey obey obey. I used to go to many different churches. The one thing they all have in common is focusing on everything you shouldn't be doing. Its like "well damn, do I really wanna go to heaven if serving God here on earth is this cumbersome?

Another take is that it's just bad to use intoxicants to excess.

Don't get why people need someone else to tell them how to live.

Becoming intoxicated makes people lose their inhibitions, which usually leads to committing sins.

I understand this with alcohol and certain prescription drugs. But other than maybe gay sex, how would weed fit in that catagory?

Weed leads to the overindulgence of food for many stoners, and gluttony is considered a sin.

Christians are stupid for the most part.

actually in the bible it says its ok to drink but not to get drunk? wtf?

I remember them telling us this in school ( I went to christian school till 8th grade) and I was like that doesn't make any sense.

keep in mind that the bible is a very old book written for a different culture in a different time.

growing up catholic- my general impression was that intoxication is believed to separate ones self from god.

that is to say, your body is a temple of god and poisoning it is seen as sacrilegious.

ALSO it is also not the SUBSTANCE itself that is inherently immoral, it is the fact that it often leads to stupid behavior.

How many people have drunk to excess, or taken benzos to excess, or opiates whatever- and later decided "wow what I did was really fucking dumb"

If you think of the bible as a guideline of how to live your life, a lot of the rules and regulations it contains are more of "guidelines", except they use ""BURNIGN IN THE ETERNITY OF HELLFIRE RAPING YOUR SOUL" as a means of coersion.

as opposed to eastern religions like buddhism which instead takes into account the imperfect nature of human morality and says instead to "TRY NOT TO" do x, y, and z.

-as opposed to Christianity which says ABSOLUTELY DON'T DO THESE THINGS
UNLESS YOU GO TO CONFESSION AND THEN IT'S ALL CHILL

TLDR: being intoxicated (in the time htis book was written it was primarily referring to alcohol) causes people to be more selfish and do reckless things rather than pursue a closer connection with god.

therefore, SIN

Proverbs 31 encourages it, under certain circumstances. :drinklager:

4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed,
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.

I have heard Christians deny that there was wine in the cup of the Last Supper, whereof Jesus said : This is my blood".

They allege it was fruit juice.

Thats downright blasphemy. Its the denying of a sacrament.

And theres clear precedent of Jesus approving of and facilitating the use of wine:

Quote:
John 2:1-11

King James Version (KJV)

2 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Whats a Christian? They only think they exist, but they don't. Schrodinger .

If Christians are placed on the planet, are they really Christians, or not? Must assume they are both!

And OP, that sounded a lot like more how Buddhists view things. Not Christians.

We are all wrong, and we are all right.
