Yeah, I had those two scanty fruits which refused to print.  One was too old and the other too young.  Luckily, the stem butts and small piece of myc laden knot weed I took along with them are growing happily on cardboard, so I finally have some viable ovoid myc to work with over the winter. :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Sumptins up with those PA ovoids. They have a shape I rarely see in my ovoids, and the fall fruiting is clearly an exception. Maybe with a different fruiting schedule and geographic isolation, there's some significant genetic drift happening.

I agree.  I vote for a third species (cearulipes, ovoids & something else) being reported.  Those are totally different than the ovoids I have found.

Unless we are the odd men out Koods and we are the ones that have a third species.

As many spore prints I sent out this spring, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Also....I hate to think of the worst but Sandy might screw up any hope we had of fall fruits anyway.  :frown:

I just hope Sandy doesn't fuck up spring fruiting... A real washout would suck.

My ovoids from SE PA look a lot like Shu's, but I agree there are at least to two somewhat different strains of ovoid.  Whether it's the weather conditions affecting shape and color, or actual genetic differences is questionable though.

Well, look what I found today!

I think it's so blue because it was all alone.

The implication of this find is troubling however... I'm going to go mushroom hunting tomorrow in a hurricane!

Lol, you crazy man!  Glad you found one.  I checked my patch in the pre-hurricane today and there was nothing.  I figure this storm is either going to make them go apeshit or completely shut them down til spring.  Guess time will tell...

I think the conditions will help my fall harvest give them the cold chilled water symbolic of a good spring flood. It's been dry here, and the fruits I've found aren't as bountiful as my dense mycelium bed leads me to believe.

I have an area where the entire sandbar is covered with mycelium using the matted down grasses to spread out. Everytime I would lift up a section to see the ground, there were always big tufts of myc... Still, that one fruit was all I could find, but admittedly there could be more as the way the vegetation has laid down makes finding them very difficult.

That lone fellow was at the end of the built up riparian zone, right where it drops off into the creek. This particular 200 ft long section of the creek was infested with ovoids for the taking this spring. It is a long standing sandbar that has been built up a couple feet above the creek. It seems like a permanent piece of territory, but it is sand and is susceptible to the kind of stream reorganization that a hurricane can bring. Oh, the tragedy it would be.

I wasn't joking :derp:

Went out this morning. Found three more fruits. Lots of rain, but it may not be intense enough to cause catastrophic flooding. We've had about 4 inches, but in 5 hours. It would take 4 inches in 2 hours to swamp everything, I'm estimating. Rain has let up some since I shot this video at 10:30 AM. Winds are starting to get a little scary now.

Well, we were the bullseye for rain but amazingly, my creek barely rose above its banks and the ovoid spots were not washed away. I guess how fast the rain comes is just as important as how much.

Maybe we we get some decent fruiting now - four mushrooms is not satisfying.

Apparently, the rivers will have some serious flooding in the next few days.

I've found them in Delaware county, so I'm sure you'll be able to find some in Bucks.  Your best bet is to wait until spring though, most of us finding these in the fall are going back to patches we know from the spring and checking them for a few odd fruits.  Finding a new patch in the fall is a real needle in the haystack, even if you find the right habitats, you could in all likelihood be walking by tons of mycelium that isn't fruiting.  It would take a great deal of luck to find that one or two fruits buried under all the fall leaves.

Checked on my patch today, nothing fruiting.  The hurricane downed several trees nearby and flushed tons of debris on top of the patch, the knotweed that was a forest last week was all lying flat.  Looks like Sandy just fed my ovoids a gigantic meal to munch on until spring.:datass:

I went out for a look today. Didn't find any fruits, but I would say that the storm has really benefitted the myc for spring. The water got just high enough to flow across the good spots, flattening down the grass into a nice blanket over the ground, which will keep things nice and damp. A lot of woody debris from this summers storm got nicely distributed too. A couple areas the embankment eroded away, exposing new areas of colonized wood that probably have been waiting to see the light of day for years. I would say this ended up being a big net positive for me.

Plus, A number of large trees were uprooted and fell across the stream so i have a bunch of new ways to get across.
