Found 2 big patches today, but just pinched off a few. Going back tomorrow to take pics and search for more patches. Gonna post more pics tomorrow night probably.

Actually that makes sense, I can picture it now. It would have to move faster on the outside, since it has more distance to travel in the same amount of time.
Cheers!

Knotweed is not a requirement, if you limit your searches to it you'll be missing patches. They are most likely to grow in any spot where flood debris accumulate, like sharp bends in the creek.

The two patches were about a fifth of the one we found today. It was a monster . The pic that shows the containers was after we were done picking from the patch. Still left A LOT! Gotta love the gregariousness! Didn't have time to get out for the Morels , and, it's my only day off this week.
There is lots of dead wood under that grass. I believe there was some dumped there after a storm or something, although it is about 30 yards from the Ohio river. It was underwater toward the end of april last year.
Thinks for all the congrats. They are definitely in season. It's not a fluke. If you are near Cincinnati or have been having similar weather you should be gettin' lucky in kantucky very soon.
GOOD LUCK GUYS!

Hygrocybe said: I checked about a hundred debris piles yesterday, and a whole lot of knotweed, and found not a single one. Then I went closer to the stream banks and found 4 patches right out in the open growing from sandy soil. The above ground debris must fruit later in the season. Pan cincts are starting to fruit in lawns.
That's what I've been sayin. Counterintuitive, because those areas seem to dry out too fast, but the sand stays wet underneath. I think early season air temps are too low without some direct heating. I just found some up the bank and into the forest today for the first time this year.
On another topic... My paper collection bag is now coated with spores, can I cut it up and bury the strips in mulch to get some new domestic patches. If not, how can I put them to use. Don't want to toss them.

Macmerdin, as for digging around... Some of them have been right out in the open, but the larger flushes are growing in areas that have grasses and weeds that are about the same density of a lawn that hasn't been mowed in a couple weeks. I use a smooth stick that doesn't catch the vegetation, but can push it aside, as I scan underneath. Just do that in a back and forth motion as you walk forward. When you find one, lose the stick and get down on your hands and knees are really look around and chances are you'll find a lot more. More often than not, they are arranged n a linear fashion along an unseen piece of wood.

is solid advice, and following it will result in many more "successful" hunts in the future.
I love how you formulate your responses Alan
-------------------- Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Fall ovoid season here in central WV. Picked a handful yesterday, and my bed looks totally colonized. Mebbe mulch it lightly with red mulch. The stuff is cheap to buy this time of year. Good luck mycophiles!

Found a couple fruits today deep under a wad of dead grass. Temps around 60 daytime/40 at night with a lot of light drizzle. Sorry, no pics, I went in for a very quick look on the spur of the moment on the way back from the mall, and didnt have any of the normal equipment.
