MacMerdin and Koods' DC hike, ovoid habitat pics and more.
    #18072903 - 04/07/13 04:16 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Afternoon in the city. The scaffolding is halfway up the monument now. They're going all the way to the top to fix the damage from the 2011 earthquake.

MacMerdin and I went for a hike today in his DC spot. As per usual, lots of Ovoid myc, no fruits yet. I just don't understand how this species wasn't described until the last decade when it is everywhere you look along this stream in the middle of the capital city of the United States of 'Murica.

Is this possibly the first stage of fruiting? A ball of myc.

Some myc that started to blue in the short time it took to get the picture.

A mushroom. It's a start. Pluteus Cervinus, I believe.

Some habitat pics from the burbs.

Woodpiles. Not the prime spot, IMO. These piles dry out too quickly. MacMerdin has similar piles that form right above the stream. Those are much better as water seems to wick up and keep everything moist. The grassy area in front of this pile is prime.

Mycelium coated grasses buried in sand. You can see how the grass strands give the myc something to stretch out over a couple square feet here. In a couple spots, the myc just pops up from underground.

Some random shit...
ID Anyone?

Frustrated deer.

A couple thousand Spotted Salamander larvae and eggs in one pool. If you aren't familiar, an adult. They are probably one of the largest salamanders you will find on land.

Some seriously scary looking security at a facility near my suburban spot. Yes, they are wearing all black, with ski masks, and carrying machine guns. It is not a government facility. It is the corporate headquarters of a defense contractor.

that's it. carry on.

Those salamanders are so cool. We don't have any native salamanders, newts or toads in Australia.

Awesome stuff, koods! Thanks for posting some descriptive habitat shots, those were really useful.

I bet it gets hot under those ski masks...

Just saw the weather forecast. This is the week! We should be into summer by Wednesday, with temps pushing 90. Typical. Go right from winter to summer with three days of spring.
