Found 2 big patches today, but just pinched off a few. Going back tomorrow to take pics and search for more patches. Gonna post more pics tomorrow night probably.

I'm in the same boat someguy >:(. I went to my creek yesterday searchin and didnt find shitt. I've got the right habitat right? I mean I found the patch my avatar came from in the same creek last year. But it was late april. Habitat pics below, need advice
Question 1: Is this the "knotweed" they are known to grow in? This is 15-20 ft away from the creek.

Question 2: I found my avatar pic on the smaller log in this picture last year. Chances of them spawning up in the same spot?

Just another 2 habitat pics:

I went down there yesterday and the only fungi growth I could find was this guy right here

Too early for northern kentucky? Hows the habitat look? Methinks more rain but if a fellow kentuckian found the first its got me thinking they are out there

I found galerina in this creek so I don't want to eat any mushies till they get T.I'd. I'm no mycologist. I just love the sacred art of tripping . I think this is a galerina, correct?

.
am I mislead by looking for these piles at the bends of the creek for em? or are these not the type of wood debris they grow on?

Everybody says that kind of pile is a prime target, but I think they dry out too quickly because I rarely see any kind of mushroom growing on them. At least until they start getting green vegetation growing over them. On the other hand, nobody seems to talk about ovoids growing right from the creek embankments, from old buried debris. About half my finds last year were discovered right at eye level as I stood with the creek lapping my feet.

Hey someguy, you could still try to be the first in your state.... Ooooh, ky already claimed... Maybe next year.

The two patches were about a fifth of the one we found today. It was a monster . The pic that shows the containers was after we were done picking from the patch. Still left A LOT! Gotta love the gregariousness! Didn't have time to get out for the Morels , and, it's my only day off this week.
There is lots of dead wood under that grass. I believe there was some dumped there after a storm or something, although it is about 30 yards from the Ohio river. It was underwater toward the end of april last year.
Thinks for all the congrats. They are definitely in season. It's not a fluke. If you are near Cincinnati or have been having similar weather you should be gettin' lucky in kantucky very soon.
GOOD LUCK GUYS!

SomeGuy said: "wine caps" aren't indigeonous to the US, so unless you are on the west coast, they are extremely extremely rare. They only occur where they have escaped from outdoor cultivation projects.
odd you say that i have encounter three different towns that have em, 3 spots in my town, one in a place about 2 hours from me another in a town 30 min from me. they may not have been indigenous but they are certainly finding their place. oh and one instance in vermont growing completely out of habitat

fact of the matter is they do love ovoid habitat for sure.
whered you get your information that they arent common on the east coast
http://leslieland.com/2008/11/wild-mushrooms-of-mid-fall-wine-caps-shaggy-manes-and-more/
Stropharia rugusoannulata is an aggressive digester of wood chips. It has colonized many mulch beds in the Northeast, both accidentally and by design as gardeners will often inoculate their mulch piles and wood chip paths to cultivate this delicious fungus. Although the most robust fruitings are in May and June, a second flush often appears in the fall, and this year I have seen them in several mulched beds in my neighborhood.
they are very common cause people introduced them, then spores spread and spread and spread i think in my town if you plant the right mulch they will just happen my neighbors had the best tasting albino wines caps i ever had but ripped up that mulch and had new mulch replaced in fact they re did that whole area cause they are stupid rich people.
the wine caps that grow at the environmental center dont taste as good at all but appear to be the same strain ill totally get some pictures and make a wine cap post

The one and only P.s that I have found were ovoids this last week. I am going to be in that area for a gig anyway so I intend to drop by the patch - fingers crossed people, we did have rain yesterday so I will have my camera primed. Here are some shots of my find for those whom haven't already had the pleasure. In Habitat:

So I would really like to find some ovoideocystidiata this season but the problem is that I live in Oregon. I know that they have been found in the PNW but most of the guides and info that I find on the net only covers the north-eastern part of the united states. I have read from previous posts that they tend to grow in wood chips near flooded river banks, primarily growing near knotweed and other debris when the temperature gets in the high 60's. Does anyone who has found ovoid's on the west coast have any advice for me? Should I look near major rivers or would a smaller stream also host said mushroom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a map from the state of Oregon website showing where knotweed grows the most prevalently, do you think it would be a good idea to look near rivers where knotweed is most abundant? Does ovoideocystidiata have a mycorrhizal association Japanese knotweed?

No species of Psilocybe form mycorrhizal associations.
Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata from San Francisco, Noiso collection
http://mushroomobserver.org/91440

Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata from Oakland, DT collection
http://mushroomobserver.org/91439

Both collections had both type A and B cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia, confirming the ID of P. ovoideocystidiata.

Great photos! I feel like an effin' rockstar.
I went and took photos before my gig and afterward went back for a harvest. Due to the fact I was performing I couldn't get down and dirty on the ground like normal. The patch is healthy and full of new pins. The pins I left before grew up nicely.
I have a couple questions regarding potency/ingestion/storage. It is my understanding that fresh mushrooms, especially when high in psilocin, are more potent. Also, Paul Stamets has recommended against eating fresh mushrooms. If one cares to ingest them fresh is it best to store them in the refrigerator wrapped in wax paper or leave them out. Is it better to dry them for ingestion rather than leave them in the fridge for 1-3 days? Ovoids can be pretty potent I understand. Are they high in psilocin like cyans? Any suggestions and helpful facts would be appreciated.
And now, the worlds happiest snowman. . .

Really just didnt feel like making the roughly 3hr drive all the way down to the Ohio river so im glad these spots r closer 2 home... the day was not a total waste!!

i wish i had a hand-pumped hose to hook up to the river. i guess a bucket would do the trick, too.
Good idea guys. A light bucket and a little spray bottle to nurture (and not drown) any little pins.
Here are a couple California ovoids with spore prints on the caps.

After many, many miles with no luck i was considering making the trip north to the Ohio this weekend. Spur of the moment i decided to check a new location that i had driven by that just looked like an idea habitat and there they were, and just in time for my birthday! Lots of pins, looks like they are gonna explode soon. If your in the bluegrass get out there. Myc so thick it was like carpet. My first find!! Much love to all you guys for the education.
Wish pics were better (phone cam) some glorious bruising going on here

Went on a fairly extended walk yesterday afternoon and was not encouraged by the fact that I discovered just as many snakes as I did fungi:

Yet another day passed without any hope of a good rain to kick off the season. Everyone else seems to be in better shape. I look at the radar obsesively. The guy on the radio used the words "drought conditions." But I still go out today, and find this corpse (it fell apart in transport):
I'm about 90% sure that these are ovoid remains. It was just sticking right out of a log. Completely dehydrated... cracker dry. This thing is at least a month old. This is what things looked like last June. Uhhgg.
The sun setting, I give up and go back to the car, light a cigarette and HOLY SHIT!!!
One is infinitely better than none, and just the boost I needed. The Mid-Atlantic Ovoid season is on!
Now for a sexy gill closeup shot:

Reds are below normal, good luck if you are in those areas. Sauce.
All I've seen are Pluteus sp, they must be drought tolerant.
