Conquering through religion.
    #8732942 -

I see this as the same as conquering with force. Instead of killing the body they go for the mind. Speaking of "god"..

To me they speak of god as some powerful force that controls all. I "think" that maybe they speak of a ruler, that they consider "god". One that is all merciful and can damn you to hell if it will.

I don't know much about the bible but i do know that those who believe in it have read it and go to church all the time to "free themselves from sin"..

So what do you think about the idea of this form of "religion" as a way to conquer the world?

What are your views on this?

Peace,
Droz

Well, thats one view on how religion works.  I personally see religion as a way humans, which are warlike monkies, can overcome the bestial vestiges of our ancestors and join together to improve our collective condition.  It gives us a reason outside ourselves to love one another, and for that alone I feel that being "conquered" by religion may be a good thing, so long as the ones running the show believe in what they are pushing.

If you look at the more recent history of religion there is a direct correlation between religious beliefs and war.  Look how many wars have been fought in the name of GOD.  The ideal of religion is nice but unfortunately mans overpowering need to control everything around them has lead many to push for global domination of their particular beliefs.  Here in America which is supposed to be land of the free, fights a religious war with its own people day after day based on horrible legislation dominated by religious beliefs.

My basic flaw with religion is that it is a fixed idea.  The bible is a specific text that has and will remain unchanged for a long period of time.  Our world and our knowledge of it is constantly changing based on what we learn.  These two things seem to conflict on mass scale and religion ends up hindering advancement.  How many people has the church killed in order to prevent its beliefs from being challenged?  My point, is that we would grow closer as a species if we can begin to look beyond the surface (religion, race, gender) and focus on what makes us all so similar.  Religion in the end seems to bring much more division than unity.

I disagree with you that religion plays any role at all in war.  Correlation is not causation.  If religion was followed for its values and not used as a tool to motivate people towards a cause (politics or war are popular) then there would be no problem.

Yes, religion is fixed, but thats because the basic rules of how to love one another and treat people as equals don't change over time.  What does change over time is how leaders twist the words of holy texts to push their own agenda.  Again, if the leaders actually practiced what they preached, there would be no problem.

Richard Dawkins describes religions as being memes. The word meme refers to something which is like a gene yet rather than be a unit of genetic information it is a unit of cultural information that is spread through words from mind to mind. I think both theists and atheists can agree with Dawkins about this one. I look at religions as being like vines that grow throughout the world. Religions that are the most succesful tend to have one authoritative book. Having a book to base the religion on is the centerpiece that holds together the cultural web weaved by that religion. Religions strictly based on oral transmission don't exist anymore.

Didn't Pope Urban II declare war when he started up the Christian Crusades?

I think it really depends on what type of religon.  Christianity, for the most part, seems to be a hypocritical religion to me.  From what I've seen, Bhuddists follow Christ's teachings more than Christians do.

"A society, in which the boss is mad enough to believe himself a prophet, is a society doomed to destruction."

"Next, they are tempted to use the name of God to justify what they do in pursuit of place, power and wealth.  And because they believe themselves to have divine justificition for their actions, they proceed, with a good conscience, to perpetrate abominations, "which nature, left to itself, would be ashamed to own.""

This is my view on religion:ass:

Religion is not fixed.  Christianity of now is almost wholly different than that of a three hundred years ago
and completely removed from what it "began" as.

Religion is responsible for war, regardless of how politicians twist it it is still the true believers doing
the fighting.  The worst case scenario of course being the  leader who is a true believer.

The Holocaust is an example of what happens when a group of leaders actually believes the philosophies of hate and
fear that they use to control the masses.  The First Crusade is another example of this.

Religion creates division, it is completely and totally removed from philosophies of love and unity.  Love and
unity stand by themselves and need no god or religion to support them.  Cultivate love in your own life and the
people around you and your community and the world will be a better place.  Attach a religion to it and all you do is
give people an excuse to be ignorant.

Religion assumes it knows what is going on and when you let people think they know whats going on it makes them
stupid and it scares them when other people think differently because they are under the impression they are
right.  Therefore it creates artificial  divisions because of false understanding.

Love is great but it has nothing to do with religion and anyone who says it does is purposely closing their eye to
everything else that religion really is, simply because they want to cling to it because it is comfortable for
them.  Lose the dogma and false belief and adopt a philosophy of love and unity and you and the world will be
better off, because the excuses to be a prick will be gone.

Again, its the leaders, not the books.  Youve done nothing to refute my actual argument.
