Onward Christian Stoner...
    #1889428 - 09/06/03 08:17 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

i have a feeling i might get flamed a bit for this, but i posted it anyway. I'm a Christian, and i'm a stoner, and as soon as i get the money, i'll be a regular shroomer . People here bitch about Christians, and Christians bitch about stoners. I wrote this so that hopefully some of you will realize that the people you gripe about aren't ignorant or jerks just because of their religion. and please dont turn this into a debate, im too tired to get into a theological discussion. but anyway, here's my mini essay:

In the opinion of many, Christian and Stoner are two mutually exclusive phrases. It is often assumed that the beliefs of a Christian contradict a desire to explore an interest in marijuana or other entheogenic substances. To many people, including the drug-using community, Christians are often viewed as pretentious, hypocritical, and anal-retentive people who frown down on the use of drugs because ?some old book tells them to?. Similarly, many Christians view stoners and other drug users to be lazy, sinful, weak-minded people who only use drugs because of peer pressure or a void in their lives. Clearly, neither stereotype is correct.

First off, let me share my interpretation of the Christian faith. Christianity is not about being perfect- nobody?s perfect. Christianity is about realizing you are not perfect because you sin, and understanding that there are eternal consequences for this sin, and furthermore, that the only way to avoid these consequences is through Christ.

You ever meet a Christian who bitched and griped at you about sinning, telling you that you shouldn?t do ( insert your favorite vice ) because it was sinful? Well Jesus Christ himself spoke of people like that, saying ?You hypocrite(s), first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers eye?. Thus, being Christian is not the reason for hypocrisy; people who gripe at your sins should remember these words and examine their own lives for sin first.

Why do the majority of Christians look down on drug use in general? Is it because ?the Bible tells them so?? The answer is a big No to that. There is no place in the Bible that denounces the use of mind-altering substances. The only exception is drunken excess. The Bible clearly warns against getting totally trashed off vodka shots and tequila. The why is pretty straightforward; how many times do you hear about some dude getting drunk, beating his wife, crashing his car, getting in a brawl, whatever. Excessive alcohol consumption leads to lack of control for the body and mind, and this leads to sin nine times out of ten. So why do most Christians look down on drugs? Not because of the teachings of God, but because of the teachings of man. Religious leaders, preachers, parents, almost every religious figure denounces drugs, so the majority of the time, a Christian will go right along with what they say and denounce drugs the same. Very few actually look past what tradition and people say and actually read up on what God had to say.

And on the subject of pot, shrooms, salvia, or whatever- what did Jesus say about this?

?Don?t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ?unclean?. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what makes a man ?unclean?.? Matthew 15:17

Essentially, it is not what goes into the body, like pot, that makes a man sin. It is what is within the person that makes them sin. Ironically, this is similar to the ideology of many on the shroomery; I?ve often heard people here compare drugs to a car. A car is not evil, but if the driver is full of evil in his heart, it can certainly be used for evil.

In my view, Christianity and entheogens are not mutually exclusive. If anything, I believe, they should go hand in hand. Perhaps one of the most religious experiences of my life consisted of smoking an insane amount of marijuana, curling up in bed, and reading the gospel of Matthew. For whatever reason, it absolutely blew me away. That was what i can only describe as a life-changing psychelic event. Another fact that most Christians don?t realize is that drugs, shrooms especially, help people to appreciate the beauty of the world. We have a beautiful planet that God made for us, and shrooms help us to enjoy and revel in it?s sheer beauty, excitement, and the overall fun of being alive.

Perhaps if both stoners and Christians were a little less ignorant of the other sides? point of view, the stereotypes held by both would be shattered. Ideally, perhaps more stoners would come to have faith in the word in God, and more Christians would come to realize that sin lies not in a fat sack of ganja, but in the human heart, and that drugs are a wonderful creation here for our enjoyment that we should thank God for.

I have a friend back home who's a Catholic stoner. He smokes weed and then feels guilty about it later.

Catholics don't read the Bible. They just have the priest read parts of it to them.

I became a Christian (or, 'came to Christ,' which is a common linguistic description) through LSD. That was 30 years ago. In the lifetime that has followed, I earned degrees in philosophy, theology (from an accredited Methodist seminary) and developmental & clinical psychology. Entheogens have been what Huxley called "Moksha [Liberation] Medicine" for me. They have helped clear the veils and dross that prevent one from recognizing and realizing the living Truth that Christians call Christ. I pray, and prayers are answered. Synchronicities (miracles) are an integral part of my life. Like Solomon, I sought Wisdom first, and God has bestowed youthfulness and material gifts upon me as well. I have faith and peace that will endure beyond the worldly gifts, and I thank the One True God many times daily (since it is my desire to 'pray without ceasing') in the Names of +++the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit+++ This trditional formulation marks me as a Christian. This, then, is my witness.

The conventional Christian and Judaic religions practiced by most Americans is a bastardization of the original religion. Early Christians (and Christ himself), were probably more akin to Buddhists.

I've been a strong agnostic/atheistic my whole life basically and I hated the Christian religion until I met my good friend who is a Christian in a nonconventional sense. I actually went to church with him one time and they just played music and the only thing they preached was love and forgiveness. The funny thing is was that it was labled a Baptist church, which if you live where I do are the hell fire and brimstone type.
