The Free Market of Ideas
    #3215542 -

What's your goal in life?  Happiness?  Peace?  Enlightenment?  Harmony?  Salvation?  Gnosis?  What if it's money?  Fame?  Getting laid as much as possible?  Getting fucked up every single day?  Do you think these last few goals are inferior?  Are you "above" such things?  Do you think these are the wrong things to strive for?  These are all part of the free market of ideas, and they may hold more value for some people than others.  My point here is that only you can decide for yourself what things in life are worth striving for.  Don't assume that what's good for you is good for everyone else.

If you spend your time meditating, praying, and expanding your consciousness while someone else spends their time getting wasted and trying to sleep with sorority girls, that doesn't make you more enlightened than them.  They are not necessarily "lost," as your ego may lead you to believe.  They have simply chosen a path in life which suits them, just as you have.  Each individual has their own path, so don't be concerned with theirs.  Just make sure you're on the right one for you. :sun:

my ego does lead me to believe (in the words of swami) that not all beliefs are equally valid. Lifestyles too.

I don't believe that everything we do is relative of value. I think their is an ultimate truth which is God/Soul/Atman/Brahma/Tao/Buddha and that matters much more than anything else. It is the one true thing, and it is the one thing that is lacking in people's lives. You can chase after whatever you want, but you will never be satisfied because the real hunger and emptiness is created by the loss of this truth. It doesn't matter how many pints of Boysenberry sorbet (mmm) I eat, how many CDs I have, how much money I earn, who I have sex with, because none of these give permanant real happiness. Those desires are only misguided attempts to fil the vacuum of our disconnected soul.

It's nice to be non-judgemental, but realistically some things are truly fulfilling and some things are not.

Look - just do what the government tells you ok!

That is the only path with real value.

 Yup, just look at Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Neil Cassady, Gary Snyder, Jerry Garcia, William Borroughs, Jim Morrison and all those cats. I'm sure there were some grrls too, just not as famous. Good examples of what you are saying, methinks.

This is why the truly wise are those who do not condemn others for being 'less wise', as with wisdom comes the knowledge of the lack of meaning and the lack of perceptual importance on an objective scale.

I find those who claim to be religious, and then condemn others who do not share their "compassionate" ways, to be quite funny

I agree deff it is quite funny. What a lot of people dont realize is that this feeling of "holier than thou" and superiority , are feelings that are shared by many members of the human race.

I agree that we are all on different paths in life. But I disagree that there isn't a path that is better than other paths. However, I also agree that it is not up to me to criticize one who is on a path that is different from mine.

What's your goal in life?

I tried a bunch of different "goals" but have settled on one which is both quite easy to obtain and keeps be satisfied through the days. My goal is to live. Nothing more specific than that, though obviously this is not my ONLY goal in life...just the main one

Don't assume that what's good for you is good for everyone else.

Very wise words. I only wish more people could come to that conclusion, as there seems to be FAR too many people around who seem to have an urge to lay their ideas of happiness on everyone else.

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

And by whose standards were their lives "fucked up"? I believe that would be yours.
