Will the patches I've found so far flower again or am I out of luck until I find new locations?

Another quick question. What season begins when ovoids season ends so I can begin doing my research about habitat. May as well look for that while hunting ovoids also.

Gman, Yeah they're always easier to spot when they turn white like that rather than when they're still a fresh caramel brown.  Even harder to find if they have those black caps, like stevo has.

avidpicker,  :awesomenod:  Nice work getting that mulch going!  I def need to mulch the piles that got started using branches.

Yes and maybe to the first question.  It depends on what stage of decomp you find the food source.  Newly fruiting debris piles will last for a couple yrs and logs can last up to 4 yrs.  They'll usually move onto a nearby branch or log or even have a tree fall right on top of a known spot, which will provide food for many years.  If your in an area that doesn't flood often, then you'll have to either feed or seed spots.  A super easy way to spread ovoids is to gently pull the stems out so you get the fuzzy base (stem butt), then cut off the fuzzy part and place in a suitable location.  Feeding spots can be as easy as gathering up dead box elder branches and laying in parallel, like how a flood does.  These acts will help ensure your locations do well for years to come.  It's always good to find new spots tho.  Many areas will fruit at different times, so it's good to have options in case scheduling prevents you from getting to a certain spot.

As far as active species, you'll have to check out which actives are in your state and then do research from there.  Other than that there's a number of edibles which start up right after ovoid season.  Chicken, chants and trumpets are fairly easy ones to go after and all of those can be found among oaks/beech.  There's lots more, but those are some of the safest to go for.  Also, there's always loads of berries that are out as well after ovoid season.  :mushroom2:

They are growing so slow here the pins are being devoured by snails and slugs.  They completely eat the caps off the stems and cause them to abort.  Lots of pins still coming though.  I think and hope, that with nighttime temps above 50 consistently and days above 60 fruits should speed up and the pests might cause less damage.  I’m itching to get down to some natural habitat soon and go for a hike. Good luck out there.

:oldman: damn slugs!  And then they leave that yellow stain on your skin too, which is a bitch to wash off.  :grrr:

Another good way to seed areas is to collect the old ones that are too far gone or slug eaten and blend with some water (mushroom smoothie) and dump that in chipped areas.

I've filled a few containers with water soaked cardboard and thrown the mycelium I pull out in there. They are growing already. I'll transplant them near my home once they really grow hopefully.

Back at it today again in a little bit, fellas. I refuse to get discouraged! I've got plenty of perfect flood plain habitat full of box elders, japanese knotweed, stinging nettle, etc. I feel like it's only a matter of when and not if. My Morel find yesterday has given me a renewed sense of hope. Back into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul

I've checked this area thoroughly 2 years in a row.  This log has fruited like this 2 years now but it's also the only fruits I find in this area.  Also, i had a good day yesterday walking with Mycobro48. He's a cool dude. We each were able to come out with our share. All of our finds were natural and first flush so on the smaller side but in good number.

Found a new spot that should be good later. We're kind of between flushes, but I got 110 grams wet.

do you guys think its worth it to go out after several days without any rain? i have a great spot but i notice ovoid flushes seem to decompose pretty quickly after fruiting. will any new flushes pop up without some rain?

also heres my freshly dried haul so far (about 85g)

This is as good a time--and your post as good a reason--as any to remind everyone that we all should be giving back to this species and the environment by inoculating good habitat in which we don't already find ovoids...or good habitat that will support a much larger population than that which we're observing year over year.

Not singling you out, just riffing off your post, but if you had been spreading inoculant throughout that area, that wouldn't be the only log in that area on which you observe specimens, making your time spent in that area ever more rewarding...both for you and for those who follow you.
