Those are beautiful.  almost sterile/lpw spore looking.  Ive noticed that with the first flushes of caerulescens will do that as well.

I've never seen one of these things in my life. I just started hunting mushrooms August of last year. I've found Gymnopilus Junonius 4 times. I live in, apparently, the best place for ovoids in the world. I can't freaking wait.

Anyone know of any way to hibernate until ovoid season is ready?

We still have about a month to go before our area gets started.  The city trees are just now starting to bud here in Bmore.

How are those PA prints looking?  Any luck getting those going down along the gulf coast?

I find it strange how there don’t seem to be any finds of ovoids in the areas between North Georgia and Southwestern Virginia. There have got to be ovoids around Charlotte, Greensboro and Greenville, SC. Right?

Road trip?

Interestingly true!  It would make sense for them to be along the rivers coming out of the Appalachia in that area.  They're on every other river that runs thru the mountains.  Maybe there just isn't many looking right there.  I'm sure we could find em if we went down there for a look

fwiw, they're posting lots of morel finds in Suffolk in the Virginia Mushroom Hunters facebook group.

Not sure if that's relevant though.

If one was to take a day off work this week/early next week and make a road trip from the DC area, what's the shortest drive one could make to have a real possibility of finding some?

I have a 20 gallon flower pot slap full of  Pennsylvania ovoid.  mycelium, no signs of pins yet. Here's a picture I just took today.

I used the compost from the horse stalls,  whatever wood they use, ovoids will RIP through it, the sticks are part of an experiment with local wood varieties to see what they like, fig is their favorite so far.

This is a  piece of wood from a fig tree after 5 days, it has the heaviest and fastest growth out of all the wood varieties tried to date.

:super:
Hell yeah, that's what's up!  Good stuff using compost from horses.  Relic mentioned last yr that his cultures were doing awesome using the same.  It does make sense tho, because the debris piles with grass growing thru always have the better clusters compared to fresher piles.  Also, very neat stuff with the figs.  This species is basically on disaster cleanup duty, so doesn't surprise me anymore they rip thru so much and fast.  Can't wait to see how they look when they finally fruit for you.  It'll be interesting to see how your environment contributes to phenotype.

Would totally be a fun trip.  If my funds were better I'd be in GA right now as well.  I think following the season northward, putting observations on the map, would be an awesome way to start the yr.  Hopefully we get to go hunting at least once again this yr.  If we don't make it down that way, let me know if you make it up here again.  :bigblunt:

Hello you wonderful mycophiles. First find for me here in central VA last year was April 14 and the year before that was April 4. Looking forward to expand my number of fruiting sites this season. Texturedsounds, if you head south you better hit me up and stop by.

Hello again everybody.  I'm really looking forward to the season this year.  I'm going to try and find some more spots just like you Wub here in Central VA.  I've got my own wheels this year and hope I can get out more than ever.  This will be my fourth season, but I do remember my first one having my first find near the end of March that year.  I'm curious to know how the impact of the flooding of the James in Central VA will have on the ovoids this year.  Thanks and cheers everyone.
