Someone sent me a couple of APE swabs. I have never used swabs before. On December 14, I smeared the one on two plates then just put the swab in another. Nothing is happening on the two and the third with the actual swab just looks like mold. Did I use it right? I did save the second swab so I still can try again.

I realize I have a lot of condensation, tried pouring hot as someone else said they do and it did not work out well lol. Going back to pouring when it reaches about 45-48.

You just streak the swab like you would a loop: I've seen people pull the cotton off with APE bc the spores are clear... idk lol

Hmmm. There was a dark spot on the swab, but you say the spores are clear?
I donβt mind waiting a bit longer for the streaked plates, just thought I should see some sign by now, 12 days.

Swabs can last a long time. Iβve seen some ppl drop them on plates, but you could do a hundred swipes before you retire it like that. Condensation can be tricky, but shouldnβt kill your plate if your SAB technique is good. Just try not to get the swab too wet when streaking it. Practice opening the swab in a way that you can set it down on the foil while the swab is still being tented by it in between plates. You will get your culture going you could try to transfer away from that mold for some practice. The right side looks possibly workable

APE is a true albino, and thus has no pigment whatsoever: even the spores

Thanks @sporealchemy and Caps! My plates arenβt usually full of condensation lol experiment gone wrong.
Iβll try a transfer and use the other swab too. When Iβm done Iβll take a pic of it, maybe they sent the wrong one?

APE swabs will have a dark or blue tint or color for sure.I don't think it's the spores that do it tho.

Well... I guess I can't pour plates? I waited longer this time, but still a lot of humidity... How do ya'll know when it's cool enough to pour? I tried resting a kitchen thermometer against the jar this time, but that's not very accurate I guess
What you're not seeing here is my Rusty White spores taking off! Yes! Both plates seem to have success!
Also, my PE transfers are taking off! They seem to like their new plates and are thickening up their myc.
My golden oyster LC2agar is ugly! I think there was a ton of junk in that live culture. Because of the condensation it's hard to see if anything good is happening in there, but I do see a lot of mycelium in there... I'm going to let it keep going fo a while.
I also learned that I'm not as sterile as I would like to be. After flaming my scalpel and cooling it in the agar, I can see nasty shit growing off the carbon it left behind. I guess I'm learning why agar is important for getting clean spawn.

First transfer to grains from agar (PE) is going well, both jars inoculated and we have take off!

I pour when I can hold the media bottle comfortably, bare handed... sometimes, the bottom has started to coagulate, and the last couple of dishes end up a little thick... stack them as high as I can in the SAB... usually only the top 2 plates of each stack have condensation, and very little, which clears up before I use them typically

So, I'm doing it by when I can hold it in my bare hand... I cook a lot... Maybe my hands are broken?

140f is cool enough to hold but still 20+ degrees too hot. Compare it to coffee, sippin' temp is different than chuggin' temp. If it feels like 'last chance' coffee it's perfect. With a thermo I've found 120f is gonna steam up way more than 116 but you run out of time fast at 116. Thick agar is worse to thicken up while pouring than soft IMO.
