So... The good news is that they ARE Psilocybe cubensis! The not so good news is that they were fairly dried up by the time I visited them this morning. I tried watering them to plump them up again, but even after 4 hours they looked the same.



I had to tear the veil to see the gills and then realised that it had already dropped it's spores on the inside of the veil. Dark purple brown spores.

You can see the blue colouring on the stems too.

There are a couple more young ones popping up on the pile which aren't dried out so hopefully they will grow to maturity before they shrivel up..

I think these are just regular cubensis that were simply opportunistic by growing on woodchip in winter.. I've seen cubes grow in winter here before, and I've seen pics of them growing on a bible, amongst other things, so it's not too much of a stretch for this to occur.

Thoughts?

Are you sure there are no animals on the property? No possibility that you raked some half broken down dung from the ground into the pile together with the wood chips? Like you say, there are a few reports of cubensis growing from wood/paper (the bible is a classic :smile: ) but it's very uncommon for this to occur in the wild.

Could be some interesting genes in those, make spore sprints when you find some fresh again. I think there are a lot of growers who would like to grow them...

I am certain there are no horses or cows on the property, nor do any have access to it. There would be small native animals for sure.

I will definitely make a spore print from the next one coming up.

In the meantime I've put the stem butts between layers of corrugated cardboard so hopefully they will colonise it. I didn't have the means to go super sterile, but I figure this strain has outgrown a whole range of other fungi and bacteria to get to the point of fruiting in the wild so maybe they are just a really strong strain.

Wow...I like the looks of this. Imagime if we can get Cubensis to colonize wood debris. Theyd spread like crazy in the forests.

I was able to make a spore print today from another one that popped up just next to where these were. I am going to grow the next generation myself. It will be my first time grow, but the time feels right to embark on the cultivation journey.

"Adaptability to specific types of wood(Secondary metabolites). this causes substantial speciation in plant pathogenic species of fungi. The Psilocybes are not eating living plants, but they are eating wood that has the chemicals still present in them.

Combine this with other environmental factors in combination with more then a single Genotype present within a species, and one or more of the genotypes might start separating from the group, leading to multiple phenotypes, and eventually speciation."


These apply to all mushrooms, not just psilocybes.

"Speciation can then be understood in terms of general models applied to other organisms. Trends of resource partitioning, divergent selection, etc., lead to genetic isolation of sub-populations. The exact way in which this occurs is still hotly debated

Mushrooms also have some unique genetic properties which may assist speciation events. Because mating type loci can become self-compatible as a result of only a few single mutations, mushroom lineages can switch breeding systems abruptly, leading to rapid sympatric isolation."

Should Try and get some spores if the opportunity arises again..
Getting a mycologist to have a geez may be a good option.

Would suggest trying to split when n if clumps start.
Testing in different but close to last few weeks temps may show something promising.

I don't think it'd be the first time, still very cool.find tho

The lizard king variety was found growing from woodchips no doubt. And in Texas if I remember right

Been seeing a few Texas wood chip cubes but still apparently mixed with a type of manure..
Your phenotype however is still very..umm.. out there...:cool::thumbup:
