From the limited experience I have with spawning BRF cakes to coir during my first year of growing (3-4 times) First thing I did was I tried grating my cakes on different sides of the standard kitchen grate and immediately noticed a significant difference in volume, the smaller holes turned a 200ml cake into roughly 1000ml cake spawm, grating a cake on the large holes produced long flat soggy looking strands to roughly unimpressive looking 500ml or so.


I do remember that I felt that I probably shouldnt have dunked the cakes before grating them, next time I spawned cakes I grated them right after birth and saw that this is the way to go about this process (for me) more volume, much more "inoculation points" when mixed with coir and resulted in much quicker full colonization of substrate. What took around a week previously only took I kid you not like 2.5 days from spawning to roughly equal parts coir so about one 1L cake spawn to 1L coir. Absolutely no need to dunk cakes that will be spawned to well hydrated coir, actually counterproductive in terms of how much volume of spawn youll get per cake. More is more in this case
