Important - All Cultivators please read. 2

We have been looking into re-arranging the current set up of forums for mushroom cultivation. As you all know currently we have for cultivation a regular forum (Mushroom Cultivation) and an Advanced forum (Advanced Mushroom Cultivation)
The problem right now is that there is just too much traffic in this forum, and I'd like to hear ideas on how we can do this better.
I was thinking of something like having 3 forums, like below:
1. Basic Mushroom Cultivation - For growers who are new to this hobby, if you've never grown before this is the forum for you.
2. Intermediate Mushroom Cultivation - If you've grown before and are familiar with the basiscs this is the forum for your questions.
3. Advanced Mushroom Cultivation - For very experienced cultivators and mad scientists to discuss new ways, methods, etc....
The titles and descriptions are no way set in stone, just an example of what I was thinking off the top of my head. If anyone has any ideas and comment I'd really appreciate your input.
This website is what you make of it, so don't be shy in voicing your thoughts
I will leave this thread up for a week to hear your ideas.
Thanks.

Sound reasonable to me. I think that everyone would benefit from taking some traffic away from this one forum, and there really are eneugh posts to go into an intermediate one as well.
Cheers

Sounds good. The only problem might be, there are still beginners posting in the advanced forum. How will you stop them from posting in the intermediate? It's worth a try though. Perhaps if just above the list of post, where you now have the message "Please search before posting", change the font to a much larger size and color it bright red.

sounds like a great idea. i have seen what you mean because all the traffic is here so no one posts in or goes to the advance and other forums. it will still just depend on if people actually use them or not......

Wow this forum is busy, already so many replies.
Well just so everyone knows the descriptions for each forum will be specific. That way we can make the moderators jobs a little easier.
However the moderators will be asked to ensure proper threads are in the proper forums. Hopefully with more detailed forum descriptions it will make their job much easier and also for everyone who posts it shouldn't be hard to figure out where your question should be asked...
Also we will get a really proper FAQ up in the future that will hopefully be interactive...

Myco-Elite had it set up that way, I liked it. It will be interesting to see how it works with the heavier traffic.

I agree about a larger perhaps red and blinking " please search" . To play the devils advocate if someone had a question about say moisture levels in rye cakes between flushes and they try searching "cakes" or something they will get so many responses that it will take days to read. If there is any way to fine tune the search engine that would be better I think. I see one problem with the 3 forums idea. The rookies will hopefully read all 3 forums. The intermediates will read theirs and the advanced. and the advanced probably know it all by now and will stick to their own forum. Meanwhile the lowly rookie has only other rookies posting in his forum and doesnt get nearly as many responses to his question from the more competant growers. I dont know of a better way but I hope there can be something out there to help the little fish in the shroomery pond.

Thor,
I think this is a wonderful idea.
Main reason.....I see alot of people getting frustrated with newbie growers.
Maybe if you opened an Intermediate Growers Forum they wouldn't get so frustrated with newbies.
And if they wanted to help the new comers.....They could go over and help out...instead of getting frustrated and lashing out.
I agree that alot of the new growers aren't reading before asking questions that have been answered 2 days before.
I try and be friendly and answer the questions.....If i know the answers....But i can see how people could get frustrated with answering the same question over and over.
My suggestion...In the Basic Cultivation Forum.....have The first post imbeded like you do with other Important posts.
In this first post explain how to do a Search....and that many of the questions they might ask are already posted if they would just read a little of the information contained within.
Another thing that has come to mind is this......Some people do not have the luxury to spend countless hours reading informative information that is on this site.
There lives are too busy.....I am 41 and i am retired and have the luxury of having alot of spare time for my hobby.
If i can help in anyway....Please let me know.

Great Idea! There definately needs to be a "Newbie Corner"
but one little problem will remain: repeat questions. As with
any education system, at their level, the same questions are
answered over and over. Otherwise the forum advances
with the participants, to the next level. I love the search and appreciate it and this site in general, but, there are those
who in honestly trying to promote the search, cause the
search to turn up a couple of pages of guys talking trash
to each other, instead of a serious answer. Just my
thoughts. Peace

chemical smile brought up a good point. new growers couldnt get the advice they need from a more experienced growers, they would be stuck in a fourm with other clueless growers

Thor,
First, thanks for this great service. I've learned a shit ton since I've been a member here. If I were you, I wouldn't have the titles of the forums basic, intermediate and advanced. This will still have people cross posting. i.e. People will still ask basic questions in the advanced forum and vice versa. Maybe make separate forums for certain topics instead of certain skill levels. That way if someone has a question about humidty, they can click on the forum that deals specifically with humidity. This should also solve the problem of too much traffic in one forum. You could have like 10 different mini forums covering maybe 3-5 topics each. Of course have a "other" forum so any topics not listed can be discussed there. It'll be hard at first coming up with every single topic and trying to set it up the most efficient way but in the long run it should solve all your problems. BTW, I like how you put in the "search before you post" link. I do agree it should be bigger and stand out a little more. That should cut down on repeat questions big time. Not that it was that big a deal to begin with. It seems like there was only 3 or 4 people getting upset about it in the first place. Take Care

theomc.com pretty much has it's boards set up this way. I like it. It would be interesting to see how it works with actual traffic.

i think bassplayer has the right idea... and whoever mentioned possibly having a forum for cakes and another one for casings. the basic/intermediate/advanced forum idea would work in theory, but i'm sure that the same problems will arise that have already been stated. in the jump bar there is the --Mushrooms & Mycology-- section, i believe you should separate it and make a new --cultivation-- section which could have all the more specific topics such as bassplayer stated (ie. growing from cakes, casing, substrates & preparation, humidity, etc). good luck! it'll be interesting to see where this all takes us

sounds like a good idea, but i think there should be more forums for beginners: like beginners innoculation and colinization, beginners casing and caking, and beginners other general questions.......... then intermediate and advanced........ tell the beginners to stay out of intermediate and advanced and reassure them that the more advanced people will check in on them and help answer queestions....just a thought

I agree with bassplayer, it might take a little more work to make all the forums out and such, but then it would be easy to find the information you need, quickly! also, in intermediate/advanced forums it woudln't have to be like that because it deals with much more complicated things then 'advanced humidty'...
