What he mean is that any programs we run on this site, i.e. the BB, have been modified so that no IP logging occurs.

Tthe impression that I got from the statement is that folks can post here anonymously. And while it may be only the naive that would believe that, it still doesn't seem right to give that impression.

I would've been more accurate to say that no logging goes on that the Shroomery staff is aware of. Traffic can be easily logged/monitored from another machine on the same network or at any of the upstream providers. If folks don't want to have their traffic monitored, they'll have to disconnect their system from the net.

Given that, it seems a little silly not to take advantage of IP logging right on the server in order to clamp down on sock puppeteering.

actually egghead if they "took advantage of IP logging" it would still not prevent sock puppets. AOL, the evil ISP used by 52% of internet users assigns a random IP every time you log into your account. In addition to that there are many anon servers on the web which can be used to mask the IP of the end user. IP logging would only serve to potentially jeapordize the current board member's privacy and only prevent the less determined of the trolls.

Sound like you're challenging me...

Anyone that thinks they have privacy on the net is a fool.

So how would it jeopardize the users? Like you said, they can just use a proxy.

The more I think about it, all the "no ip logging" policy does is provide the admins w/ denialbility over sockpuppets. Why do the admins want sock puppets around?

I especially like the tinge of fear at the end of your graph. You should be in govt.

If we logged IP's it would help in no way to block suckpuppets.

If I block one IP then they reconnect or go through a proxy... If I block a whole section of ip's then I block potential viewers of this site that aren't the sockmasters.

If you are admitting defeat on it, can you at least give the users some tools to deal with it then? The board is just barely useable. It might look like a big community until you figure in multiple personalities and turnover.

An "ignore this user" feature would be most welcome, as it would not require any work of the admins, protects users' "privacy", deals with the noise/overload prob.

If you guys want donations, provide a community were folks feel like they belong.
